Soul Calibur 4 Catch-All

So what night, exactly, is Fight Club?

Good question. I would say we do not have an official night, but we do have pickup games after 8pm EST nightly. Anyone want to step up and claim and night and time?

Hey, thanks to the folks who invited me to play tonight, but it was my first night playing the game and I wanted to play a little solo to get the feel for it. I'll be around for a beatdown later in the week.

I'm not sure this game is really conducive to a large gathering. You can only fit 4 people in one room and even then you spend a good deal of time just watching unless you happen to be the best person in the room.

Or, y'know, someone who whores unblockable ranged lightning attacks.

I finally got my 30 achievements so I have all the custom character parts available (I think) and some of it's a little disappointing. It's like they had two separate people designing the male and female parts. Some of the top-tier parts are NUTS. There's an "apron" for females that gives +100 to Special, and some gloves that give +35 to attack. There seem to be a lot more creative and cool parts for the males than the females, probably since so many of the female parts were designed just to be "sexy." Also, men only get 2 different items for the "sock" slot and they both suck. That hardly seems fair since that's pretty much a free slot for females (it typically gets covered up by something else and it never conflicts with anything).

Now I'm just going through story mode over and over, maxing out styles and earning money to buy clothes and weapons. Since I now realize how much fun it is to match randomly generated characters, I'm making it a priority to buy all the silliest hats.

I made a custom character using Mitsurugi's style with 196% damage (only 50% health, though). Killed Taki in only 4 normal attacks. Unfortunately, in order to max out damage I needed to buy... sigh... Kitty Ears. I bought them and I can't un-buy them, so now they're going to show up in randomly generated characters and piss me off.

So, you guys are total enablers. I will be heading in Saturday morning to pick this up and possibly Grid. Depends on what I can get for trade in on some old stuff I have lying around, not to mention the dreamcast I'm selling to my bass player.

Man, Lobster, you're scaring me with all the stats you're throwing out there.

In MY day, you didn't get to customize fighting game characters...in fact, you didn't get to CHOOSE a character! You played one guy, with one style. You had a joystick and two buttons. Wanna kick? Hit the kick button. Wanna kick harder? Hit the kick button harder.

Seriously...I can still play the game just by selecting a character and mashing some buttons, right?

In theory...

Don't worry about the customization too much. I think we usually use standard mode for multiplayer so any customization is purely aesthetic.

I am addicted to creating characters and modifying the existing characters. I don't think I could ever go back to a fighting game where you couldn't change how the characters look, I am now totally spoiled.

I had a great time playing with folks last night. Unfortunately, Sinatar's great custom DC characters inspired me to try creating some characters of my own and I spent a good ninety minutes just playing around to get 3 custom characters of any quality. I think I need to unlock more accessories.

I did finally hit the 10,000 hits and 1,000 block achievements last know so I know that I have perhaps been playing too much.

Ooooh, which custom DC characters did you make? I want to take pictures of my Watchmen characters so bad and post them but the family camera has gone missing all of a sudden. They're slightly Renn-fair versions of themselves but it's oh so satisfying to use them.

I agree, customization is key. This stuff is like crack for me.

I agree. Fighting games peaked with Karate Champ!

Well, no. But Karate Champ was still awesome.

Although I did make Gandalf in SC3. I wasn't crazy about the stick fighting technique, but since it was a magical morphing stick and he is a wizard, I guess it made sense.

The Tick didn't come out quite so well.

Did he fight with a spoon?

I've got Joker, Harley Quinn, Robin, Batman, The Punisher, Spider-Man, Cyclops, and a couple of others.

I wish. I had him fight with Talim's weapons because it was the closest thing to bare-fisted I could come up with.

Someone HAS to make Captain Hammer in SC4, though. Anyone up for the challenge?

Picked this up today by trading in my old GBA SP. Gamestop had an extra $20 deal going on. I played for a good 5 hours, unlocked quite a bit of stuff and having a blast. Hope to see some GWJ folk online for some fighting.

All my Soul Calibur time has been assigned to watching the Olympics. Even if I weren't cool with it, we've only got on HDTV.

I've confirmed that you unlock all the custom character parts by the time you get to 30 achievements, whether you've done the tower or not. I got 35 and no new items, so I guess the Leviathan/Voodoo sets at 30 are it (which is kind of a relief since those armor sets cost about 100,000 gold each).

Nice. I can see myself getting 30 achievements and grinding the cash before I could fulfill all the secret conditions.

Would love to play with some of you cats... I get my ass handed to me in every ranked match, and I don't like their gamertags either. That makes a big difference!

Once I got my ass beat in a ranked match and at the end a little 12-year-old kept going WOOOOOOOOO!

I got the achievements that require you to play ranked matches. NEVER going back there again. Just try to catch some of us when we're online, Slumber. Fighting is all well and good but the real fun starts when you have it make you a totally randomized custom character.

Well, I'll be picking up this next week once my roomate comes up to OK with his PS3. I'm a pretty old school yoshimitsu player, so If your on PS3 with this, pm me and we will play.

Send me an invite on Live -- I just rented it and from hearsay I'd rather throw down with goodjers.

Cute piece on 1up about people re-creating "famous" characters using the customisation tool. Some are good, some are just plain worrying.

But will we see our own Lobster Mobster's creations ridiculed in this story?

Also, somebody totally stole my M Bison idea. =P

That Dr. Doom is awesome.

No, because I don't make 'cosplay' characters. I like to be original!

Have you guys seen Lance yet?

Nope, I tried to add you on XBL but you are too popular. =P

Yeah, I know. Everybody loves me. Let me have a look at my list this evening and I'll try to clean it up.

Of course, giving him a hammer as a weapon would be wrong, for obvious reasons.

Give him Talim's weapon.

I picked this up a couple of nights ago - against my better judgment somewhat, due to my longstanding fighting-game apathy and my complete lack of skill where the genre is concerned. My thinking was this: If I actually buy a fighting game new, instead of merely taking a stab at a demo or a rental and getting frustrated after an hour, I might actually stick with it and see what gets people so fired up. It's actually the first fighting game I've ever owned.

So far so good - I've been up until 2 am playing singleplayer the last two nights.

Not to re-open the can of worms, but reading over this thread, I was surprised by the complaints about the overt sexualization of several characters. I didn't really play the earlier games in the series, but when I picked this one up, the uh, "mature" quality of the content was exactly what I expected. I think it's gratuitous and juvenile as well, but I wasn't at all surprised - I guess I figured that sort of thing is pretty much endemic to fighting games.

I'm terrible. But slowly improving. For someone completely unfamiliar, it's daunting. I made the mistake of starting with Hilde - she seems like a cool, versatile character but I eventually decided that pulling off her more sophisticated moves takes a little more skill than I possess. I'm currently messing around with Cassandra, Voldo, and Ivy movesets, and they seem a bit easier to manage for a newbie like myself.

I'm grinding characters through story mode while working my way up the tower. Story mode on the normal difficulty setting is a bit too easy now, so I'm working up the gumption to take a stab at hard. I'm only at floor 10 in the tower so far. At this point the thought of playing online fills me with dread, but I'm sure I'll venture out there sooner or later.
