Also, it was great getting the "God of Numbers" (or something along those lines - the one where the time passed needs to match the time left in the round as you win) achievement in my first few bouts. That would be pretty hard to try and get on purpose, I think.
This happened to me in my first half hour of play I think. I think it's more common than it seems like it should be.
The achievements are obtainable online. My friend got a bunch (like fighting Yoda) when we were playing today.
Lost 7 matches in a row and finally won by playing Maxi and being unpredictable.
That's the key to winning in general, I find. (being unpredictable that is, not playing Maxi) =)

Voldo's also good for being unpredictable. If you know how to use his various contortionist stances he can be formidable.
My favorite tactic against spamming opponents was to use Yoshimitsu and spam his dashing counter back at them. After losing something like a third of their health a couple times in a row, they learn to stop trying to take me down with one move and learn to actually play the game.

OK. Then I'm worse that I thought. :-)
It also might be that the "hardcore" players are more likely to be purists and not want to deal with any of that customization crap, so when you play standard you're up against more skilled players.
I don't care for all the customization. I want to play the game with the standard characters and I want my opponent to play with standard characters.
What, you don't like a guy wearing a cop hat and a monocle with assless chaps fighting in the style of Lizardman?
I don't mind the customization, just as long as the stats aren't altered.
My roommate has taken to playing Ranked matches with Sophetia in a giant Hello Kitty (ripoff) outfit. The reactions over voice chat are quite amusing, from outright laughter to wtf to "Oh sh*t, a level 15" followed by "I'm going to get my ass kicked by a teddy bear."
It's also amusing when they break off the suit but not the head, so it's just Sophie in a bikini with a giant kitty head.
Best way to play SCIV online:
Random character set to auto design.

I'll say! Those are my favorite matches!
I had two people quit on me tonight after losing a round to 'Lou' the (shirtless) street fighting cop. =(
Was it something I said?
Good times tonight. My tactic of using random awkward homoerotic random male characters worked. Most opponents were too wierded out to put up much defense. :p
So. Um. How is the physics, if you catch my drift?

Were they ranked? I heard if you quit from a ranked match there's no mark on your record and the "winner" gets nothing.

Nope, I haven't been able to get into a ranked match since I started playing. The "room" is always "full". =( These were regular old Player matches.
Also, got in a room yesterday with somebody who kept trying to pull off the Ivy combo. Unfortunately he apparently didn't know how to block low, so I introduced him to Lizardman's sweep.
As a rule I don't much like Lizard, but he looks good in stereotypical '70's gay biker gear. Soldier hat, spikes, etc.
Still haven't successfully pulled off a critical finish. Is hard!
Lizardman has been my attempt to start using a new character. I am a big believer in the psychological aspect of the game, and he doesn't seem to get too much respect.
Plus I like the move where he crawls on the ground and eats people.
Good lord the floor 20 is PITA. Finally, after 2 hours last night, beat Sizuku. I kept running out of time. I guess i was supposed to use a critical finish, but i have yet to really figure out how it works. After relentlessly pounding on her I final won with 0 seconds left. This is the first time I've thrown a controller since I've had wireless one. Luckily I was able to muster some restraint and aimed it for a padded chair.
Does anyone know where I can get a list of how to unlock the extra stages? I haven't been able to find anything on it.
Is there really a girl character on floor 15 named Certis?

Yes. I laughed a lot when that level came up.
I've run into she-certis a few times as well. Good for a chuckle or two!
Awesome
So, I just picked the game up today, and I am really floored by just how well done it really is. I even jumped into an online match easily and chatted it up with some other guys, No lag at all.
I don't know if Yoda is cheese, but he has been fun to play with in story mode so far. Actually, I am almost a complete button masher, and have no idea who is fair to play with. But Yoda is fun, so I'm glad he was included.
I haven't messed with creating characters yet. Is that pretty much mandatory for online play?
So what night, exactly, is Fight Club?
After relentlessly pounding on her ... I was able to muster some restraint and aimed it for a padded chair.
Indeed.
