Soul Calibur 4 Catch-All

I spent much of last night creating approximations of Watchmen characters, and then getting trounced while using them online. It is... very addictive. I don't really understand all the special powers and stats stuff yet (no manual as it's from Gamefly). Have to root around in the game menus or something.

Once you get in a game the multiplayer works quite well. The matchmaking service on PS3 sucks, though. If anything at all goes wrong in the process of setting up the match you have to start over from scratch. Really annoying.

Have I mentioned yet that I'm dying inside a little bit every day?
Stay with me, I'll get on topic. My 360 died 4 matches into soul calibur 4. I am a gigantic soul calibur 4 fan and this was the first game I've actually bought for full price and on the day of release for the xbox. But what's even worse (than reading all this great stuff about the game and falling behind the curve a couple weeks) is that there is a soul calibur 4 tourney at pax this year. So I should have my xbox back just in time to go to pax....which doesn't help at all.

So all the talk is about the star wars characters....anybody have anything nice to say about the regular cast of souls? (Told ya I'd get on topic eventually).

@&#&@@!!! The tower is beginning to drive me crazy. I am now around floor 23 and they want me to kill 9 guys (3 of which have double health) with 1 guy!

I could button mash it up with Raphael or something but it's crazy how difficult they made these.

Friends came over saturday afternoon and we popped in SC4. Everything went well until somebody accidentally picked Ivy. There was a long pause, followed by "I can't believe I'm actually seeing that" laughter. Ivy was never selected again.

You think that's bad, I can't get past floor 7. =(

I mustered up the courage to go online yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised by how well I did. I won and lost a lot, but the only person I consistently could not beat was a Raph player.

Well I figured out that int he later level you HAVE to use a custom character. My guy is not pimped with many HP drains and gains. I' currently on floor 32.

Also, is there a place to find out how to get the treasures for each floor?

Too bad. I really like Ivy's fighting style. You could always make a custom character with the same style but you need to level up Ivy's style to 9 or you won't be able to make anything as powerful, skill-wise.

Yeah, that's why they give you 50 slots, you're supposed to make new characters to meet specific challenges. I made a character specifically for basement diving as well, with HP Drain A and HP Burst.

You can find a listing of treasure requirements at GameFAQs. Just stay away from the forum section. That place is a wasteland of threads about jedis and boobies. Keep in mind that you can eventually unlock all of the tower items just by getting achievements so don't feel like you're missing out on something if you're having trouble getting a treasure. Also if you get a chest that contains an item you've already purchased you'll receive the purchase price instead, so don't hold back on buying equipment just because you want to see if you can get it for free.

By the way, does anyone have a good strategy for getting the achievements for breaking all your opponent's armor and winning with a critical finish? You can't do it in training mode or VS. and I haven't found a way to quickly and reliably break all of my enemy's armor without killing them first. Also, how do I get the achievement for fighting Yoda? That doesn't work in VS either and he's not in any of the story modes. Is he in one of the arcade modes?

I'd argue about the description of "wasteland" when you make it sound so cool otherwise, but I've already made the mistake of going near the gamefaqs forum.

hehe jedi boobies

The winning with a crit is very easy. Just do a guard break for every move until their meter is flashing red and their health down to 20% or below. Then as asoon as the guard break anim is done press all 4 buttons.

I hate posting this but it looks like there's a ridiculously easy infinite combo move with Ivy showing up in online play...

Dear God I hope we see this patched soon.

Yeah, that's a pretty easy combo to do.

Huh. Pretty sure I got that one when my friend picked him in VS....maybe it has to be over XBL?

Yeah, my brother and I got the achievement in Vs.

Don't you have to have all their armor broken first?

Hmm. Maybe player 2 can't be a CPU. I used a second controller to try to get the armor break stuff but it didn't work. I'll give it a shot tonight.

That's not even a combo, it's one single move! Pretty funny though. Might be a good way to get through the tower for those of you having trouble.

No all the armor does not need to be broken. Just press all 4 buttons right after you do a GB attack and their health is 20% and below.

No idea. I managed to do the break all armor one in my first run at story mode and haven't done it since.

I haven't gotten it, but I assume he'll show up in Arcade Mode if you're playing as The Apprentice. You unlock The Apprentice by playing as Yoda in Arcade Mode.

So if you don't need to break all the armor, then what's the point of being able to? So you can strip down the girls?

Good call.

I finally got into customizing characters today, rather than just creating custom ones. I think I understand now how you're supposed to beat those tower levels. It's much easier to create a strong character based off an existing one.

Nightmare has some cool gear!

If you're referring to the extra equipment slot, not all characters get those, only the ones with some slots you can't customize for whatever reason. Yoshimitsu is like that too.

I went online and played some standard ranked games. Oh my god... so painful. The online system is so poorly designed. 9 times out of 10 when I hit quick match or tried to join a room in custom search it'd tell me the room was full. Would it try again? No. Would it dump me back to the list of games? No. All the way back to the quick/custom/create menu. Game developers, I'm going to give you a secret and you can use it for free. When a player tries to join an online game, they are usually not dedicated to THAT EXACT ROOM. If they don't get into the room, they STILL WANT TO PLAY.

I did manage to get some games though, and was thoroughly trounced most of the time. Most of the time it was frustrating crap, newbies using the same move over and over and me being too stupid or slow to punish them for it. But then one guy had excellent ping in the room list, but as soon as we got into the game his ping PLUMMETED. With the host advantage he proceeded to slaughter me with moves I simply could not react to, at all. Maybe the guy had a download queued up to start right when the round began or something.

Either way, I got my achievement for winning two consecutive matches, I played all the stages I had available, and I am NOT GOING BACK until I unlock the other stages so I can get that achievement too. I'll stick to goodjers, thanks.

Picked this up on Saturday, it's really fun off-line. Then I went into a match online, and it was set to Best of Five instead of Best of Three. I was up 2-1 and lost 3-2. I simply lost interest in playing after 3 rounds and got whupped. Like playing DOOM on Live, where they set the game to "no time limit / no frag limit".. I don't want to play that much.

I think it's best of five by default for some reason and I don't know if you can change that.

Ugh! I'm pretty sure I picked standard match for xbox live but every match I join is using custom characters. Add me if you're on X360 and want to play online (and aren't that good so I can win ).

Standard match just means that all your fancy crap won't affect your stats at all.

Yeah, its just the character look. Nothing else.

.

OK. Then I'm worse that I thought.

Man.

I just got my ass handed to my by a guy who had a fetish for Capcom Characters. Every single guy he played was a version of a DMC or Castlevania character.

And he proceeded to whoop the ever loving snapple out of me. Lost 7 matches in a row and finally won by playing Maxi and being unpredictable.

I stand by my assertion that even without the infinite air combo bug, Ivy in the hands of the competent is an absolute nightmare. Pretty sad when someone takes your favorite character in a Simon Belmont getup and proceeds to tar-and-feather you across the board. Sigh...

Benticore on Xlive if you want a match.

I'll be in the damn training room.

Benticore
Out

Finally got some proper time with the game yesterday, on the 360. We played until my offline buddy's button-mashing hand cramped, going through all of the stages and all of the characters. Then I played the single player for several hours, unlocking all but the secret characters. Is it just the Apprentice? Because there's still two slots left on the character roster.

I never played SC3, but played a lot of SC2 on the Xbox. This just feels so much better. I'm not good enough to worry about balance issues, it's absolutely jaw-dropping beautiful, and the character creation is a lot of fun. The two things I don't like are Ivy, which is a damn shame since she used to be my favorite (and my wife's, as well) and the lack of a manual. Why is it that they never ship manuals with review copies, even when they ship at the same time as retail? Huh? I have a feeling there's a bunch of mechanics I don't understand without a trip to GameFAQs.

Also, it was great getting the "God of Numbers" (or something along those lines - the one where the time passed needs to match the time left in the round as you win) achievement in my first few bouts. That would be pretty hard to try and get on purpose, I think.
