Too Human Demo up on XBLA

How does loot work? I tried out the demo for the first time last time and ran around killing guys. Every so often, something would appear on the left of the HUD -- say, a little boot icon with Boots of Bootiness -- but that apparently wasn't me picking something up, because it was rarely in my inventory. Sometimes it was; I picked up a couple of weapons and a set of blueprints, but there were a lot of things 'mentioned' that I didn't get. What am I doing wrong?

As to the game (after about 40 mins):
-seems decent
-fighting as a berserker is interesting, might even get all the way to 'fun' if I could figure out how to kill guys with shields (at least, I /think/ they're shields) without getting the piss pounded out of me)
-can you skip the 5 minute resurrection scene when you die? I get it; angles, light, blah blah blah. It was cool the first time or two; after that, it's just too damn long. Let me get back to playing.
-is there a manual somewhere?
-character models seem pretty good
-the lip synching is just awful, as are people's lower jaws. Either that, or there were some vicious underbites in the distant past.

Learn to knock enemies into the air, either to juggle them with guns/air melee, or just knock them off of the platform if you are near a dropoff. Double-tap the thumbstick to do this, then start firing or just jump up and start swinging at them. Ping-ponging away from a strong enemy to hit a lesser one and then ping-ponging back is a good tactic, try using trashmobs as combo fodder instead of killing them all right away.

There is an auto-trash option in the loot/armor menus, which lets you set thresholds of stuff to automatically reduce into raw cash. Or, you may not have been moving up and down (then left and right) through the weapon categories on the weapon and armor tabs. Each weapon type has its own slot, the same with armor. There is no general "inventory" browsing screen where everything is lumped into one big list like the fiasco of inventory management in Mass Effect..

If you don't like the ress scene, try learning to avoid dying? I honestly don't get why the scene pisses some people off so much, even when I didn't know what I was doing and died 3 times to the first Grendel trollbot, I wasn't like "omg I gotta get back to fighting NOW!" because I noticed that everything else was continuing to occur in realtime while I was being revived.

Heimdall's secretary looks like a man in drag, and I've always considered myself to be pretty darn forgiving when it comes to character models.

Also, for people commenting on how much better the Berserker's combat feels, keep in mind that your attacks' response time and slide distance are affected by your combo meter, equipment, and I'm assuming your level as well. The berserker with a full level 4 combo meter is INSANE, but honestly if you fill the champion's combo meter up he feels almost as resposnive (and he's much much better in midair than the berserker! )

True, but Berserker can go to combo level 5... although that depends on if you pick Human alignment.

-edit-

That said, I'm still trying to figure out what is the difference between Berserker, Champion and Bio-Engineer when it comes to air-combat! They seem to be fairly equal out side of pure damage dealing. Champion can keep enemies in the air longer using guns, though.

Air combat is pretty tricky solo in the demo, I suspect in large part because most of the enemies can't survive the actual hit into the air, let alone being combo fodder for multiple pingpongs between them. If you can manage to knock 2 of the rocket goblins up in the air, it's pretty easy to pretty much bounce between them in midair until they stop kicking.

The trick for air combat is the Hammer!(...two handed preferably.) It has a good area effect, in where if you are surrounded by a mob and you preform a juggle, Balder will slam the hammer on the ground and send about 6 enemies into the air! What I usually do when playing as Berserker, as soon as the hammer hits the ground, go to the inventory screen, switch to the swords... jump up and pretty much ricochet between the enemies before they hit the ground.

That sound burdensome and tedious. Especially since the menu system has so much lag its embarassingly painful. Do you actually do this every time you go into combat?

EDIT: Oh yeah btw, as it seems no one can get it right, the main character's name is Baldur, not balder (even if he is, in fact, bald) , baldir or baldor.

Burdensome and tedious... maybe, I'm just trying to have some fun with the demo. Plus, no, I don't do thins every time I go into combat... only when opportunity is available to have a nice mob gathered together or I get surrounded. Besides, ultimately what it is is 'serving' gameplay that is available in co-op. One guy use the hammer to juggle while another is in the air cutting the mob down. Since there is no co-op in the demo... you work with what you have!

Offer your free editing services to high school kids or someone else who might want them. Also mention to them that there is a rat in separate, since many people don't learn that little memory hook.

So, I played through again as the berserker, and found it a vastly more entertaining experience. I still don't feel like they perfectly nailed the two stick combat, but they have convinced me that it's the wave of the future. There's something very visceral and engaging about getting instant response whenever I swing the stick to point at a new foe. If they fix the menu speed, I believe I'll have to pick this one up.

"This one goes to 11"

Not sure what to think about the demo after playing around with it a bit last night. What exactly are the rest of the people around you for? The champion can basically throw enemies in the air, but is there really any difference between classes? Most of the time, I just waded in, started swinging with the sword, and won. That could be a bit repetitive....actually it was a bit repetitive. Still, it seemed satisfying in a hack and slash sort of way...probably a rental.

Two deaths and I called it quits. That animation is abominable -- I'd rather play outside. So I did. Did'nt mind the game otherwise, but the back and forth story telling was also annoying. I'm assuming that was just becuase it was a demo, and they were trying (and failing by the method delivered) to get us interested in the story. Didn't reallyget a full handle on the mechanics. This a game where I'd gladly peruse the manual acouple of times.

A link to the manual has been posted a couple times already in this thread for your perusally satisfaction.

Sad to hear it didn't quite gel for ya. I quite liked the Diablo-esque style.

It was just the death animation sequenace, and the fact that its freakin' gorgeous outside this week. So biking beat Too Human. I'll check out the full game when it comes out. Much hangs in the Multiplayer capabilities. And it being cold outside.

They there to make you look more bad*ss! Outside of that, not sure.

All classes can preform Juggle. That said, Defender can not preform air-combat, Bio-E/Commando are too weak at melee and only Champion/Berserker excel at it. (Plus their combo meter grows faster in air combat.)

Besides that, there are differences in classes outside of stats. Like Bio-E can heal himself and can turn enemies against each other (that is something fun to watch.) Commando is proficient with guns and based on his skill tree, he'll get more deadlier with them. Defender is a tank, he can not get knocked down... by missiles or the elites. Beserker has speed and massive damage output but he lacks defense... so once he get surrounded, he is toast. Champion is more or less balanced for a bit of everything.

Yeah, it takes a coupe of plays to really get a grasp of things.

Until you try it again, enjoy the sunshine!

New Too Human Catch-All.
