iPhone Games Catch-All

Its not bad. Entertaining when your brain isnt up for Sudoku. Its also a good tech demo of what the iPhone can do. Crisp graphics, subtle sounds, fairly advanced physics simulation and a unique input method.

There's also a newer one, Labyrinth LE (Free) that shows that the accelerometer can do more than I knew it could. Its a true gyro, or at least simulates one -very- well. The control on that is incredibly smooth and sensitive without being too touchy. Its impressive.

The poker game is fun. I wish the same people would make an actual dice rolling simulator though. The one that's out sucks.

And it's a pretty decent level for a free application.

Did anyone else notice Aurora Feint is closely related to (my favorite) match 3 title, Tetris Attack?

In Tetris Attack, the player is presented with a playfield consisting of a virtual grid of squares, each of which can be occupied by a colored block. Blocks are stacked on top of one another and rise steadily toward the top of the playfield, with new blocks being added at the bottom. The player must arrange blocks in horizontal or vertical lines of three or more matching colors by swapping blocks horizontally two at a time. As matching lines are formed, the blocks are cleared from the screen and any blocks above them fall into the gaps. The game is over when the blocks touch the top of the playfield, or another game-ending condition is met (such as reaching a time limit or clearing blocks below a set line).

The player moves a two-block cursor around the playfield using the D-pad and swaps blocks within the cursor using the action button. A block may be swapped with an empty space, and blocks that are moved into an empty column immediately fall toward the bottom of the playfield. The player can cause the playfield to rise more quickly by pressing either shoulder button. The cursor is free to move while blocks are clearing, allowing the player to form other matches and line up chains.

Clearing more than three tiles in a single move scores a Combo, while Chains are scored when falling blocks from one clear cause another clear to occur.

The chaining of combos is the key to both TA and AF. Adding the tilt to swap feature only made my search for the screen clearing Downloading the update for AF now (23.6 megs?!) and will have to see if some of the bugs got smashed.

Aurora Feint (Puzzle RPG)

Dangit! After hearing about this on the podcast, I tried to get it but it looks like it got pulled. :(

Doh! No wonder I couldn't find it when I went to download it yesterday. Kinda glad, though, as the security issue was kind of a big one. Hopefully it'll be back up soon.

It's back up this morning...

It took me a few days to realize the tilting feature of the puzzle... :P

Firewords is a fun bookworm/boggle game. Pretty quick to play each game. Very simple gameplay. Make words with the letter tiles. When you make a word the new tiles go right into place where the old ones were (rather than sliding down). I prefer the sliding down of words as that adds more strategy. Overall, though, It's a fun little game that's under $5.

I've been having way too much fun with the poker/dice game. Great way to waste 5 minutes here and there. You shake the phone to roll the dice.

I know there's a motion sensor in there and it's supposed to be tilted and maybe even shaken but it seems like a bad idea to shake something I payed $300 used for all the time.

There are no moving parts in the device other than the buttons so it shouldn't be a big deal.

The iPhone is a very durable little gadget. You can drop it on concrete and it wont miss a beat. A little shake wont hurt.

I found another app last night thats kinda cool. UrbanSpoon (Free) finds your location and and uses a sort of slot machine to find you a restaurant nearby, randomizing the price range, style, and location to give you a random eatery. You shake it and it will find you something nearby. You can of course just use it to find nearby stuff too of course

Also, it's your fault that I bought the game (Poker/Dice), so if my phone breaks, you owe me a new phone.

I will attest to the pocket->concrete drop test.

Same here.

I've had a Treo for years now, and dropped it only once I think. Dropped the iphone the first week I had it (in Brazil, no less, on rather craggy concrete). A few very tiny scratches, and the metal corner's scuffed off a bit. Extremely resilient (though I need to find something good to buff the scratches out, still...)

I put a silicon skin on mine the second it came in the mail just like on my DS. The stuff is awesome.

I have a silicon skin and screen protector on mine. It can survive a fall to concrete but who is going to test the shaking by going to Home Depot and putting their iphone into the paint mixer? Not me.

Which silicone skin and screen protector do you guys use? I'm shopping around for one so I'll have it when the iPhone arrives.

I use the antiglare screen, for the zero fingerprint factor, and the fact that it really changes how the screen feels with sweaty fingers.

I use the agent 18 case, but I'm thinking of going naked.

Mine is naked and has been for a year. Its in great shape. A tiny invisible scratch on the screen doesn't bother me. No other damage, just a Guitar Hero sticker on the back

I've always used the phones naked. Every case I've seen simply ruins the look and feel of the device. But, I do use a leather slip case when I take the phone on my bike.

I have a Belkin slim leather case that came with a pretty good, almost impossible to tell it's on screen protector. Except those two damn airbubbles. Damn you!

I use a cozip case. It is very thin and leaves the entire front and bottom open. Works very well and I like the iphone better with it on than off. They also offer ones with designs on them. The screen protector was on it when I got it and I'm not sure what brand it is. It had just been applied and was done quite well so I left it. I'm not normally one to use screen protectors but this one doesn't bother me much at all.

Cro-Mag Rally is now $5.99. I think I'll give it a spin.

Order the 8 mil stuff. I got 2 feet of it and haven't had to reapply since I bought it. The stuff is nearly invisible and if you dig around on the net you can find templates for iPod Touch/iPhone screen protection to make your cover neat. Make sure you have a really sharp knife to cut it though, as this stuff was invented to protect the leading edge of carbonfiber helicopter blades. I've had it on my iPod since it arrived in Sept. last year and have no wounds on my device whatsoever. I now use it on my cell phone screen, my heart rate montior screen and on my carbon fiber bike parts. I have a plastic case for a bit more shock protection, and am considering the Otterbox Armor Case as I have their armor series for my nano and regularly swim with it. Something about doing kickboard drills and watching tv sounds appealing...

Same thing, but pre-cut to the correct size from ZAGG.

I had this for my gigabeat, and my brother just bought it for his instinct. It works really well.

I've opted for something simpler for mine with this Swiss Army case I got at Best Buy. I especially like how the inside of the case cleans finger prints from the screen.

Yeah but for 20$ you can 5 feet of the 6" width, 8 mil stuff. It's handy for any gadget that needs screen protection.

These are so not games!

I was hoping someone was posting about a new Civilization, Risk, or Axis & Allies clone for the iphone.

There's a great, free version of Sudoku that let's your music/podcast keep playing. Sudoku Classic - Free is the name from Phase2 Media. Many mornings on the bus are spent listening to a podcast and playing this.

I'm waiting for that too. Give it time and I'm sure there will be. I mean hell, if freaking Spore is coming for the iPhone, who knows what'll be next...
