Far Cry 2 Catch-All

Yeah, I was interested in this title from the moment it was announced due to the style of game (Crysis and STALKER were easily in my top five of last year) but every developer interview or video they release just heighten my anticipation even more. In fact, this is probably the title I'm most excited about for the holiday season. I hope if it delivers on it's promises it does well. Despite the promise Deus Ex suggested, so few open-ended FPS titles come out, and usually they tend to be half-broken East European ones. If a decently done one with a big American budget and polish fails then it's back to generic rail shooters for Ubisoft, probably.

And if the game sucks? I'll probably get a kick out of setting everything on fire for a few hours at least.

Much like others here I look forward to this game more every time they talk about it.

It's beautiful. My 8600m gt is scared.

Hah, I've just logged into GWJ and searched for this topic to post this Also, make sure to see Developer demo showcasing stealth gameplay, very neat.

EXPLOSIOOOOONS WOOOO!

I really disliked the original one, but this looks so great.

I'm on the fence. If the multiplayer is well fleshed out with the progression system COD4 had and it gets a substantial following on XBL I'll probably pick it up.

Either way, Ubisoft is going to advertise the hell out of this game. They already had ads pasted all over the last UFC event to the point where I thought the game was coming out this month :o.

I hope it has mutants!

The video was cool, but I noticed it caused me to pause.

Despite all the thousands of virtual baddies I kill in games, I have killed in games for years and years via slicing, dicing, shooting, exploding, chainsawing etc etc, I found myself reflecting a bit on the violence involved in maiming a virtually baddie, to lure out a second virtual baddie, so I can kill them both at the sametime.

WTH.. I dont know why it caused me to reflect. Never has before. Maybe it's that the dev's nailed the graphics and animation. Maybe because its a real tactic of war... I don't know. I'm just surprised that it elicited a bit of reflection on gaming within me.

I'll get past it. There. I'm past it.

You weren't alone in this feeling, though. The thought passed through my mind, "This guy is just trying to help his friend. A fellow human." I have a big problem with harming the "innocent" NPCs in games. A soldier helping a wounded one almost qualifies.

Same, glad to hear I wasn't the only one. It could be the fact the the voice over seemed enthusiastic about murdering them so coldly. Even in movies I try to push aside that ever constant thought "Hey, they are just trying to put food on their tables, and those rebels probably have families to feed too". I know sometimes regular people have to die in conflict situations, but to have a joyous feeling on different ways to kill them is another issue altogether.

Strange...I usually clamp up and feel tense just reading the "mean" choices in an RPG, but all I could think of when watching that video was "awesome!"

Still, there's been a lot of discussion about the game being "Heart of Darkness" inspired, and the lead developer on this game has talked a lot about how the plot tries to question your tactical choices on a moral level and how you need to manipulate others in order to survive, so it's possible your reaction is something they anticipated.

Ammo that cooks off don't launch bullets with much energy. And propane tanks don't shoot flame or explode when shot. Still, looks cool.

Stop trying to apply your "physics" to the "awesome".

A little side story:
A company I worked for did some warehouse management IT work for one of the famous ammo/gun manufacturers. One day a colleague of mine witnessed an 'accident' during the normal operations of the warehouse. Ammo manufacturers apparently heatshrink the ammo boxes onto pallets for shipment. When they do this, a large metal shield with an emergency door is lowered over the pallet during the heat shrink process . That day, the door was left open on the shield. Not sure how, maybe the extra oxygen from not having the shielding closed properly, but the boxes caught on fire and the boxed ammo started to go off within the shield. One worker near the shield was hurt by a stray, another was injured rushing over trying to close the door and save his buddy from further injury. I dont believe any was killed, that was the only reason I mention the story.

The thing that struck me most about the story, was that I had never guessed heatshrinking and ammo cartons go together.

Back on topic:
I'm relieved to read I'm not the only one that was moved by the tactical choices in that gameplay video.

I won't deny it's dangerous and can certainly result in injury. Modeling it as a reliable way to eliminate nearby enemies is only cinematic. Do you know if they were injured by brass shrapnel or actual bullets?

No, I got the story from the witness, but he didnt get that detailed. What he interpreted as bullets firing within the shield might have been bullets exploding. I don't know how it played out.

Being fan of realism, are we?

I didn't read that preview because I don't want to know too much, but I already like the direction they're taking this game in.

I really hope this game draws me in like Stalker did. The vistas in this game are gorgeous. I really really like the African atmosphere.

I hope it plays well and I hope they play the Malaria card right and allow it to add tension to the game.

Man, between this and Fallout 3, I fancy I'm going to be spending a lot of time meandering through virtual wilderness and urban blight with a shotgun, checking out sunsets.

Yup! That's why I only play TF2 and BF2142, games by people who know how to do realism right!

New trailer is up. It's a "mood" trailer so there isn't a whole lot of gameplay. Still, some pretty good shots of the environment, including some deep canyons I can't wait to a explore.

EDIT: Game's out on October 1st.

If anyone is curious: music there is taken from Black Hawk Down OST.
God, I love this game's setting so much. I think that they've made a great decision taking a game in that direction, along with this astonishing engine they could really push art direction there.

That almost sold me right there. "Barra Barra" is such an awesome track.

Oh, and the video is awesome sauce too.

Sweet merciful crap, it looks amazing.

but, people get malaria and live..like all the time? pretty often, especially in Africa..did they take out all the free clinics in the game?

Comes with a map editor. An AMAZING map editor.

This looks exactly like the map editor in the first console Far Cry. You could get a playable map made in about 5 minutes. It was far more enjoyable that Halo 3's forge editor, except maybe that you can only have one person edit at a time. The map sizes were huge (and it looks like they've gotten bigger). I used to pop in, throw up some mountains, then drive an ATV around for hours.

Excitement. mounting.

I am surprised they got the editor going on the 360. It really goods like it came right off the PC. Of course I will only be using it on the PC and the best ones will probably be from PC makers

Pretty sweet. Looks like the Far Cry 2 engine is using heightmaps, rather than Crysis' solid terrain. Anyone seen different? I want caves dammit. Give me those and I'll ask for something else!

You can make caves in the crytek editor pretty easily. Just shrink your brush down in the side of a mountain, Switch to black and then you can punch a hole in the mountain.
