iPhone Games Catch-All

Make an appointment at an apple store if there's one near you. Their guys should be able to figure things out.

I'm gonna tell you, I have just about had it with this thing. I'm now over 24 hours without my music/mp3's with no end in sight. I'm now deep into talking to the guys from new Delhi named "Sam" who say they are not familiar with the problems I am describing and can I please give them my serial number (which I can't even read it is so small and Itunes doesn't have it because it's screwed up too). I am mighty close to tossing this thing and heading to best Buy to pick up a Creative labs one that is drag and drop. This is just bordering on ridiculous.

But...but... it's APPLE.

THis just in: AquaForest and Band are really good fun, and great show off applications. Also, handing someone your iphone at your backyard BBQ so they can pick the music playing from the server in the basement? Priceless.

Aquaforest bogs down so much so fast. And I cant find any real puzzles in the game, just short tutorial puzzles. Am I looking in the wrong place?

One of the comments on Rabbit's 1up article led me to Aurora Feint. Its a very cool puzzle/quasi RPG and its free! It has a definite puzzle-quest vibe to it.

So far its easily the best game on iPhone. Its a crime that it is essentially buried. It never appears on the front page and really, they should be charging 2-5$ for this but if the developers want to earn some good will and interest in their abiliies, then it's worked. Ill buy their next one.

Aquaforest is fun not for the puzzle challenges, but for the ooh ahh factor of freeplay.

Overnight however, AIM was running in the background and the phone went from full battery to half battery. I deleted AIM since there didnt seem to be a way to just stop its process.

Hey I don't know what's up with the battery thing but it's impossible on the iPhone to do background processes. AIM is push, it is not running in the background.

How is it possible to not have background processes? How would it know when the alarm is supposed to go off, your text and call receiving software has to be running, when you minimize the music player, its still going, isnt that running in the background?

If I have AIM installed and I dont have my screen on and AIM pulled up, will I get a message?

Maybe background is the wrong word... not visible?

There is a standard phone daemon doing push to all the API apps. Removing AIM does not remove the daemon as it's part of the phone OS.

speak english!

Ill reinstall AIM and see what happens with my battery. I get a really poor signal at my house and sometimes the battery goes faster than it should because of that. The night after the 2.0 update was particularly bad though, and got better when I killed AIM.

Has anyone tried Aurora Feint yet? I think its like half finished, or I just havent figured out everything yet (no in-game help) but its a lot of fun.

There's a setting to turn off push in the settings, that would save you battery life. Uninstalling AIM does not uninstall push, because everything on the phone, including the built in stuff, uses the same push.

Oh how I wish I could find an iPhone 3G so I could show you what I'm talking about

Nice 1up writeup, rabbit.

I had a hellishly busy family weekend, so I didn't really have a chance to steal my wife's iPhone and download some games. Soon, though. I'm pretty stoked what I've read/seen so far. Could be a killer gaming platform.

Huh? Aim doesn't push if it's not in foreground - at least, I haven't been able to get it to do so. (thanks!)

There's a world of opportunity on the gaming front, but it still feels very much early days.

Like I said I can't get my hands on a damn phone to try it myself! *shakes fist* but the way it's supposed to work is that the AIM icon on the home screen updates with unread messages which are pushed to you by the AIM servers

I thought I read that the push data was pushed by apple servers which aren't ready yet... Could be mistaken though.

As far as I've read (and seen from playing with one today). AIM does not push, unless it's actively open. The push cloud(?) won't be active until September. Meaning that if you don't have it on the foreground you will be receiving AIM/text, but you won't know until you actually open it.

I think that sounds just about right. Damn it, I want one.

I made this Post about de Blob but it kinda got lost in the shuffle so rep-posting in the catch-all.

I found a great little game for the iPhone. Basically you're this little blob guy who can absorb paint and then roll around and smash into buildings to paint them. It's coming out for the Wii and DS later this year as well. It's got some pretty decent graphics and good use of the accelerometer/tilt feature. It's only $6.99 (dropped from it's original $9.99 price) so if you want a nice, fun and colorful game to mess around with, I'd recommend it.

Reposting!

Alright, who's playing what? I'm kinda bored with Super Monkey Ball so I went digging. http://toucharcade.com/category/games/ seems to cover most titles worth a shot. From their suggestions I went after the freebies (I'm holding off on the purchases for now). Edit: I'm thinking that a "sorted by price" list might be the most useful. This helps choose between $9.99 for EA Tetris that's unplayable at higher speeds due to interface issues vs. some free "Block Drop & Roll" Tetris-clone (hint: please make this game!)

The good:

Free:
Aurora Feint (Puzzle RPG)
JirboBreak (Breakout)
Moonlight Mahjong Lite
Morocco (Go/Othello/Reversi with AI)
Tap Tap Revenge

Paid:
Bomberman Touch ($7.99) Rabbit's 1up review
Critter Crunch ($9.99) Rabbit's 1up review
de Blob ($6.99) Swat Review
Cro-Mag Rally ($9.99) Rabbit's 1up review
Enigmo ($9.99) Rabbit's 1up review
Sudoku Unlimited ($2.99)
polypusher- "The reason this one stands out for me is that its the cheapest one that actually generates puzzles for an unlimited number and its got a very nice, simple style"
Super Monkey Ball
(Apple) Texas Hold'em ($4.99) Rabbit's 1up review

The novel (good proof of concept):

Free:
iPint

Paid:
Aqua Forest ($6.99) polypusher- I enjoyed the original flash version of this kind of game, but it gets much more fancy than the iPhone can handle. It doesnt take long for the toy to start chugging. 7 bucks is too much for this trinket

The worthless:

I think it's a dupe.

Here's the apps thread.

Edit: In terms of what I've actually found myself playing, Aurora Feint is way in the lead, followed by Scrabble and Enigmo.

I like me the Scrabble too.

I never owned a handheld console, I've always been a PC gamer. I bought a 360 two years ago, but I never had any interest in a PSP or DS. I do use an iPhone however (christmas gift from my boss last christmas) and I've found myself getting increasingly interested in the games the new 2.0 firmware was promising (and the easy way of bringing them into your household). Today I upgraded to 2.0 and it wasn't long until I was browsing the AppStore. The Crash Bandicoot kart game seemed fun and based on this review I chose that one over cro-mag rally. Played it for like twenty minutes and it's more fun than I imagined, this whole handheld gaming is quite fun! Can't wait to play some more tonight...

I finally got my iphone (non-3g) and got it upgraded to 2.0. I haven't spent much time with any one game but I'll be grabbing a couple of them soon. Anyone found anything new lately?

Trism: I have to admit I haven't put enough time into this to really figure out the mechanics as well as I'd like. The execution of the game is done well enough, it's just that they've almost thrown too many possibilities with the whole tilting aspect. It does make me want to sit and play with it for long periods of time to really master how it works, so it's got that going for it.

I gotta say, the more I play this, the more addicted I get. Trism was definitely worth the money, if you like Tetris-like puzzle games at all.

Dangit! After hearing about this on the podcast, I tried to get it but it looks like it got pulled.

Doh! No wonder I couldn't find it when I went to download it yesterday. Kinda glad, though, as the security issue was kind of a big one. Hopefully it'll be back up soon.

It's back up this morning...

It took me a few days to realize the tilting feature of the puzzle...

Cool, downloading now.

Dexter. This could be fun.

A Dexter game could be cool but for some reason Im picturing a terrible side scrolling platforming, hack n slash game like you'd see with movie licenses on NES.

No,no,no. You hack *with* the phone. I hope.
