APFB 2K8 League Season 4 Suggestions

I thought I would try to kick this off now so we can roll on to another season coming up. It seems like people were happy with the draft, and I am assuming we want to continue that. I'm for it, as well.

1) If that is something we agree on, how about keepers? Two players? One in each level? On offense, one defense? Just something to consider.

2) If we keep, can we trade?

3) Also, when creating a schedule, how about setting up our own divisions. Like for this season of 10 teams, we could have scheduled home and away for four other teams, and then just scheduled each divisions best record to play in the playoff game. Short and sweet, and might develop even more rivalries.

That's pretty much all I got. I think it is still a fun season to play, and really, I got more enjoyment out of a season of football per hour played, than any game I have. Even time away from the game is pretty fun, as I think the draft was a blast last season. It was fun watching other Goodjers build their teams. I think another go at it will provide some even more interesting strategies. Which is why I love this game so much on that level. As a game, building a team for season play, with the restrictions this game has, is a blast to do. I hope you all feel the same way, and we can have another season with 10 teams.

1.I, like the ideas on divisions and stuff I just, don't know if the 2k site will allow you to do all of that.

2. As far as keepers, I'm not a big fan of it but if we do it, I would say 1 player is better then 2.

if we go keepers Id say only one as well

I vote we all be forced to take Steve DeBerg. Even if he isn't in the game.

With or without the finger splint?

I think the idea for divisions would just be for scheduling. Actually, I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but scheduling is kind of a mini nightmare. You have to figure out how to make sure everyone gets 4 home games and everyone plays almost everyone in a 10 game league. I have to bust out spreadsheets and everything. So not only would divisions be fun, they'd be easier. In an 8 game season two divisions would essentially mean you'd just develop some rivalries. You'd play a couple of the teams on your schedule twice and you wouldn't even see teams in the other division until the playoffs. 2k wouldn't support it technically. There's no facility for this in the game. But we could know the divisions, devise a schedule as such and it could be interesting.

That's what I was thinking, DS. Does the game allow for you to set up the playoffs as you choose as well? That would be the other requirement for it to work.

Also, in this scenario, I would favor just a one game championship, and then on to the next season, like baseball used to do before divisional play.

I don't know about the latter...be good to get at least the top 4 teams into a play-off.

Divisions would be interesting...

I'm not sure about the whole keeper issue. The draft was so much fun this time around that it might be interesting to try again. If we do keepers, one sounds better than two. If we get newcomers, should they get an extra pick? where in the order?

I don't like keepers. Mostly because no keepers makes the draft more interesting. You might have to jump in the draft to get your keeper. Or else sweat bullets, draft Bronze and pretend you really hate... say... Ben Coates.

Well, my thought on keepers would be that it is nice for teams to build an identity. Of course, that will probably come in the form of use drafting our favorite players anyway, so it is not that big of a deal.

I can see that, but I really hate wildcard systems. They are necessary evil in some circumstances, such as having and odd number of divisions. But otherwise, I prefer champions facing off.

Well, I think if we continue to draft, and only allow one team to have a player, we are pretty maxed out in the number of teams. I'm afraid defenses will be horrible if we continue to add teams. So newcomers would have to take over a team someone gives up.

I just thought keepers might be fun, like I have had in other leagues, and fantasy sports. This is kind of a different situation, though. I have no problem trying to rebuild a team from scratch each season. Building this one was fun, and I already have ideas on how to do it better.

Or at least for season 4....no, season 5, that's another story!

Plus, my defense hasn't been that bad! I think I'm still under 100 points allowed in 5 games...but I still have to play ertic and DS!

I think defense has gotten better as we have gone along, but there are very few punts. If you check out the QB ratings from the last two seasons compared to this one, they are way up. I haven't run the numbers on punts, but I imagine they are way down this season. I think we are ok as is, but I would not want to see 12+ teams. I mean, I'm willing to try if there are guys beating down the door to play. But I'd like to see more guys beating the door down to play this season!

I definitely think that keepers makes more sense if you go into the draft understanding that. So that would mean putting off keepers for a season, which is cool, as well.

Anything else? How about banning some plays? Forcing a certain amount of players on each side of the field? Mayve forcing the use of at least one OL or DL? Forcing us to take a Kicker?

I kind of like the kicker and OL idea, as that may take some pressure off drafting defense.

I'm not saying this season wasn't great, because it has been competitive and fun. I just thought this thread would be a good way to just throw some stuff on the board, and see what sticks.

This is all good stuff. Of course, it's all immaterial if we can't get season 3 going.

As to divisions, 2k doesn't support the kind of playoff configurations you guys are envisioning. Try creating a league from within the game sometime and you'll see. So ideas like division leaders and a different playoff format would be something we'd have to handle outside the game.

I think it sounds great. Just making sure everyone knows how inflexible 2k is. To do, say, 4 divisions and only the division winners play would be something we'd have to handle ourselves.

I hope we can implement some of this stuff all the same. Assuming we want to finish season 3

We'll finish season 3...just a bit slowly right now.

It'd be interesting to require at least one lineman or one lineman per side. I'm up for just about anything. I'm really digging my team now, but we'll see about the next one...

Kush here, ready to get back into the game when Season 4 comes around. I'll keep a better eye this time around for the draft.

Excellent!

Now if we can just get some games going. I cannot wait to draft again.

I, say no to banning players. Draft better if my team sucks it's my fault.

That's not the issue, so much. I'm fully convinced you could draft an even worse team!

But if we required an OL and a K, that would alter the balance of our teams, and force some other creative solutions. That could be good or bad.

Yes, but theres not enough kickers, to draft from anyhow. Lets not base this off of one draft. People will learn, from ther mistakes such as I and my crappy team. The draft order will be different next time and maybe, that's all you need to build a better team. I also say, that after the next season the person/ Team, with the worst record should get first pick, then the other seven can be picked from the hat.

And yes, I can build and even worst team. But lets remember season Two. I played Bagger, the 2 worst teams, for the Championship, and I won beating bagger in a great game, I was name Champion of season 2. While you and Muffin, were still choking on your loses. So what do's this mean anybody can win but we shouldn't chirp until we win one season.

Just teasing you, frankie!

I have no problem going forward with this season as exactly as this last one. I think it has been a great one so far. I just wanted to get a gauge on what everybody wanted out of next season.

I know your were just teasing. I was also, I just don't know how to add the funny faces.

I'm interested in joining if there is an opening. I just picked it up today, so I should be easy pickin's.

Well, we are in a serious stall right now, for some reason. Pretty soon we will take a roll call and see how many teams we have, and how many we want. We have spent three weeks trying to get out week six games in. I think it is just summertime blues. Lots of stuff for everyone to do.

I imagine once August rolls around, we will be ready to kick up Season IV.

As an aside, after dragging my way through NCAA 09, and being sent screaming into the warm embrace of APFB (found some awesome sliders), i'm in for a Season four, although i'd like to know if there's any way we can spice things up personnel or gameplay-wise. Too bad the game doesn't allow for more wheeling and dealing in Online Leagues.

One more thought on this: Any way to turn off the late hits penalties?

They're usually cheap (especially if one is used to playing Madden), and sense the injuries are turned off, they have no negative effects (and can be kinda' humorous!).

By the way, I found instructions on copying a playbook over from one team to another.

This information was proivded by JHova over at the 2K Sports Forums.

1. Select a Teams > Manage Teams > > Play Book Manager for the team whose play book you want to copy.
2. Change the PlayBook by selecting any new play that is not in the playbook. Do NOT save the playbook!
3. Hit the B button to back out of the Play Book Manager, then B again to go back to the screen where you can select a Team.
4. Select the team you wish to copy the Play Book to, and then select Play Book Manager.
5. Once in the Play Book Manager, simply hit 'Start' to save the Play Book, and it will save the Play Book from the first team you were editing to the current team.

Voila! You now have a new valid play book to work with on the second team!

EDIT:

You forgot to add when you go to the other playbook manager and it asks, "If you leave you will lose all changes... blah, blah, blah" YOU MUST SELECT "NO."

After you select "NO" then press start.

I wonder -- should we get the draft started after the first week of the play-offs for season 3?

Turn off late hits would be fine with me.

Also, what about upping the difficulty to Legend? I think that would be a great way to slow down what I think is a bit too much offense right now. Legend is all I play in single player, and I think the improved AI play would improve out online games.

Maybe we could try a few games to test this out. Anybody want to give it a try?

Perhaps we could change the settings so that Elliottx wins?

I'd be willing to try it out.

Although I find offense fun. And defense is a challenge on the current difficulty setting. As always, I'm a facilitator, no a dictator. So I'm happy to change the difficult if there's concensus.

I like offense, though.

I like the Idea of Legend, but don't change the late hit, how often do's that happen were we need to turn it off. If it happens to you alot then stop hitting late.

Of course, late hit is really to deter hits that could cause injuries. It's kind of pointless to have it turned on (assuming it can be turned off in an online league) if injuries are off.
