Do nerf guns count?

Stories like this one kind of scare me when I think about dropping $700+ on a Kimber. The reliability issue stories continue pretty regularly even on the newest models. Is your Springfield as solid as I hear they tend to be? I haven't heard a negative word about them yet except that they aren't as smooth or generally as pretty as the Kimber stuff.

My Springfield has always been 100% reliable. I've never had any trouble with it. It eats up all kinds of ammo without a complaint.

How much trouble is it really to get a supressor? I understand you have to pay a tax because it's a class 3 item and register it, but where do you even get the paperwork for that? I've read around on some forums and there doesn't seem to be much in the way of description of the whole process.

Depends on your locale. You have to get a sheriff or chief of police or someone like that to sign off on your transfer application. The BATFE will have all of the paperwork needed. The major forms are also available at TitleII.com. Subguns.com is a good resource about gun laws, and the NFA. Check them out here.

I have a gun wishlist of sorts that I keep adding to (attempt to drag thread kicking and screaming back on topic). I don't have it with me, so I'll try to recreate what I can from memory.

Springfield 1903
M1 Garand
Stainless Ruger Vaquero in .45 Colt, 4 5/8" barrel
2" or 3" barrel .357 revolver

Hmm, that's too short. There must be quite a few I'm not remembering.

I was able to help Dear Old Dad procure himself a Springfield '03. He'd been looking for one for years, and I found two of them in a local gunshop. He lives in a different state, so he had to pay shipping/transfer charges, but he was so happy.

The owner of his gunshop offered him twice what he would have paid for it.

Come to think of it, Dad's also got an M1 garand. It was an unissued model from WW2, only the stock had been replaced. Dad takes it out to shoot on John Wayne's birthday and a couple of other special occasions during the year.

I've never fired them, but I've handled them enough to say those are worthy additions to any gun vault. I'd have bought the other '03 if I'd had the money.

Okay, my shooting iron collection currently has the following:

Winchester Model 70 Stealth in .308 Nikon Monarch optics
2x HK USP .45 (one with the SS slide)
Colt 1991A1
Ruger Mk 2 (threaded)
Ruger 10/22T (threaded)
Mossberg 590 Milspec
Stag Arms AR15 (flat top w/EOTech + Surefire)
S&W 686

Currently awaiting ATF approval on my Advanced Armament Pilot

I'm seriously considering ditching the 70 and getting a 700VLS with Leupold Mk IV, but that will have to wait a little while.

I'm jealous. I think I'd rather have one for the AR though if I was going to get one.

Well, technically, a device for your AR would be a suppressor, not a silencer. The reason I got one for the 22lr is because I can easily get subsonic ammo for it and still have a hell of a lot of fun with it. I could get one for the 223 or 308 as well, but the sonic crack still makes shooting it pretty conspicuous.

Plus, having it on a Ruger Mk 2 makes you look like a mobbed up baddass.

I watched video just a couple days ago of a guy doing 75 yard shots as a demonstration, first with normal .223 ammunition and then with the subsonic stuff. All you heard was the bolt operation, a puff, and the metal clink when the round hit the target. Granted I have no idea who made the subsonic .223 or what kind of sacrifices you make in range to get that silence. I'd guess that they were doing a demonstration at 75 yards would probably be telling.

Can you link to these videos?

I'm hunting youtube now and not having any luck. It was a company specific demonstration and I have no idea what the company name was. I'm not even sure if they were pimping the suppressor or the subsonic ammo.

*edit*

A google search shows multiple hits and product pages for subsonic .223 ammo, it's just apparently expensive. More research also makes it apparent that in at least one case (Gemtech) using subsonic ammo voids the warranty on their suppressors/silencers?

I can!

M4, Semi Auto - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbiUp...

.308 Bolt action - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQm9r...

These were two of the most impressive ones I found. Awesome stuff

I'm a bit mystified. What is the point in having a subsonic .223? You have only marginally more bullet mass than you do with a .22lr. A subsonic AR15 would just be a very expensive version of a Ruger 10/22.

Subsonic rounds often use very heavy-for-caliber bullets. Of course, then you may run into problems with twist rates.

Precisely. I can't see a 90+gr .223 round being particularly useful in a 1/9. If the rounds are as expensive as they appear to be, I think I'd rather stick with the 10/22. I can pick up subsonic ammo at Bass Pro for a song and a dance.

Being that the .223 round is designed to do damage by tumbling and fragmenting upon hitting tissue, I can't see that slowing it down would make for a very effective round.

On other subjects, I finally brought my ammo and cleaning gear down with me. I'm going to hit the range this weekend, and it's going to be pretty bad. I haven't shot more than a few magazines in the past 2 years.

We ventilated Zombie Steve and Zombie Bob today. Fun was had by all.

And the older guy and his son at the range thought they were hilarious.

Aim for the brain!

Heres my latest baby.

I also have a .40 24/7 Taurus and a .223 Remington 700.
I plan on buying a small shotgun for my wife next probably a 10 gauge.

Do you mean 20 gauge? Cause 10 is not what I would go to for a "small" shotgun

If it doesn't knock you off your feet than its small, right?

QFT. A 10g is a freaking Ernie Hemmingway elephant gun.

Ernie Hemmingway was weak.

I bet the last thing that went through his mind was his teeth.

Bisley style, eh? Is it true Colt or one of the various reproductions?

As the old joke goes...

I got a gun for my wife.

It was a fair trade.

A buddy of mine tried to get me into that crazy single action crap a while ago. Said it was a whole lot of fun dressing up like a cowboy and pretending he was in the Old West. I had to remind him that the only folks that looked like me in the Old West were driving railroad spikes and doing laundry.

He hasn't asked me since.

Reproduction. Can't really condone spending that kind of money on a original. It's a blast to shoot, but with the 45 cowboy loads they are kind of anemic. Haven't found anyone with real loads.

Can't argue with that. Colt 1873s are severely overvalued IMO. Especially with so many fine duplicates available from other sources (with or without hammer-mounted firing pins).

I ordered some PMags from Magpul last week along with some other things that are going to take longer to ship. The mags came today. Super nice. I really like the followers they use. Well worth the purchase I think, though I've not actually gotten to use them yet.

I must get me one of these!

That's actually the video I mentioned earlier and was just completely unable to find afterward. In my memory though it was an M4, which could be why I was having trouble finding it on youtube

Is there a list somewhere of which guns you should own? Preferably listed by caliber and type in order from beginner to advanced?

edit: I know there are more types of handgun bullets but this list is just an example. I'm sure we can expand it once we cover the common ones. http://world.guns.ru/ammo/am02-e.htm
