Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition Catch All

Maptools, while cost effective, sucks balls compared to Fantasy Grounds 2.

FWIW, when I talked to the WOTC guys about it for our interview on the podcast last August, they were very aware of what FG2 was up to, and I think we're a little afraid. FG2 is insanely great.

In that case I think I'm going to throw down the cash for FG2. It does seem just that worth it.

How well do dice roll under water?

I played my first actual game in FG2 last night. Both the DM and I were trying to get the hang of the program, but as a testament either to the D&D system, FG, or both, we were able to have a good time without even using most of the advanced features. For some reason the default character sheet won't let you enter spells directly, requiring them to be dragged from the D20 rules, so we just entered them under special abilities. A lot of the char sheet we outright ignored. I asked at one point if he was using the combat tracker and he said he didn't know how so was just keeping track the old fashioned way :). It's nice to know that while there are plenty of advanced features there for when you might want them, it's fully possible to play without until you get the hang of it.

Somewhat ironically so soon after 4e came out, we were playing with first edition rules. The DM was returning to the hobby after 10 years, he said, and that's the version he has books and modules for.

Better if they're weighted

Wow, not sure if i should laugh or cringe.

I laughed

I got my books still sitting the in shrink wrap.

*sigh*

When I was a kid I had the time and no money. Now that I have the money I have no time...

My favorite game store is getting more PHBs in today... So, when are we firing up the first GWJ 4th Edition night?

Correct me if I am wrong, but it looks like that works as a tool for "around the table" play, but not for connecting people remotely to tools that will allow them to play over the 'net.

Nah it is a virtual tabletop where the dm sets up as a server and the players log in. I'm in Phoenix,az playing with my friends back home in Birmingham,al every other sunday. Skype actually gives us the most grief, but it is all free.

Fantasy grounds is realy cool, and our group almost bought into it. I forget what made us go the rptools route besides the price?

Our group is actually excited about the D&DI and hope they do for DnD what they did for magic. The price though is the only thing, and not knowing exactly what you get for the 15/mo.

I would be down for a GWJ game either around Chicago or online.

My group bailed on me for tonight and odds are we wont be able to reset for a while.

This week's a definitely no-go for me, next week is dicey, but the week after that I'll start making a weeknight free on a weekly basis. Best candidates for me will be either Tuesday or Thursday night, preferably Tuesday. Mondays and Wednesdays are taken already.

I've continued reading into the PHB, and am looking to grab the DMG & MM when I can get them for under retail. $35 each is just too steep for me, especially given how much smaller the DMG is than the PHB.

Go to www.gameoutfitter.com they have all 3 books at $21.99 or $23.99 with free shipping;-)

Amazon (linked in main post) has the gift set for $57.72 or $19.24/book. Still backordered till mid-July though...

Ok, just to make things a little easier... This should be a list of everyone in this thread who expressly displayed interest in joining a GWJ online group. If you said it and I missed you, I'm sorry, I'm not very good at the innuendo. So I'm just gonna stick this in here and see what happens.

Mordiceius

stupidhaiku
Farscry

It sounds like Farscry is organizing a night to play during the week, and stupidhaiku is doing fantasygrounds research (with rabbit being the resident pro). I'm down with paying the money for it, I experimented with the demo and it looked pretty good.

I'm interested in the online group.

I remember doing an online game with SpyNavy? as DM, Fletcher, myself and Pigpen, possibly another using Skype and FG1, it worked out really, really well! Though that was 3.0 rules and we only played for a couple months. Anyways, I am currently in a group with alternating campaigns every week, so another one, wouldn't allow me to keep my personalities in check;-)

I've ordered the books from Amazon, will be getting them end of the month it looks like (shipping is the 26th estimated)
Would definitely be interested in playing a game online (given it was on a day I could play, I work weekend evenings).
I'd even be willing to play something other than a rogue or even a gnome!;)

This is ambitious, but if we get even close to this many people, we could do some cool cross-adventure stuff with two groups. Obviously, that's a long way away, but it's fun to dream. I like doing double-blind stuff whenever it's feasible.

Dependant upon the schedule I'd be interested in trying online as well. Timezone (Pacific) and other commitments may be a barrier, but consider me as a possible participant.

2 groups enter, one group leaves?

THUNDERDOME! THUNDERDOME!

Hey, if someone wants to roll up a huge, dumb beast for this game, I'll play a short, intelligent guy who rides on his shoulders.

That would be awesome, but I pity the DM who has to make up the rules for that...

Looking back at that it was certainly insensitive of me and I do apologize.

actually it could be awesome, but it would require some crazy coordination... especially if the two "groups" didn't realize the other group wasn't NPCs But as for a premise it's fairly simple, have both groups going after the same target, and bump into each oter in the "dungeon" on the way to the "dragon"

Mountain orc (FR rules) Barb, and a gnome Wizzard.

We did it in a 1 off campaign was a blast.

I still think it's funny. I have yet to confirm that my family members are not underwater, though. I should probably get on that.

If you get a Chicagoland game together, I am interested. I can probably bring another player as well, and I'll talk to McChuck and Grenn about it if you need.

My 3.5 Edition "Savage Tide" campaign has an interesting Master-Blaster team up. A Bullywug (Hulking toad-man) Barbarian and a Grippli (small tree-frog guy) Rogue. We have already had the "He has the mind of a child!" quote thrown out there several times.

Oh, and I would be down for taking part in the online hi-jinks, but I think my schedule/time-zone will prevent me from taking part. Other than gushing over D&D in the inevitable after-game forum roundup.

Jolly Bill, please add me to the list - I'm interested in the online group.

I live in Northern Virginia and most of the folks I used to game with are in Baltimore, so a weekday would be great...

I'd be interested, but I know I'd never be able to make a regular commitment these days.

I'm on the northern end of central Wisconsin, so I wasn't flooded out of my home.

I scanned through the PHB today. No detailed reading, just skimming. It was interesting to see that the class chapter includes spells, so just the chapter on classes is over 100 pages. And that doesn't include rituals. Spells also go up to level 29, because there's none of that "you're 5th level, now you can cast 3rd level spells!" weirdness.

oh thank god, the only time I've been annoyed with a DM is when my 5th level rogue failed a disarm trap check, then failed the saving throw against a 5th tier spell, needless to say insta death and rerolling ensued (as at 5th level there wasn't a chance in hell of getting a ressurection of any sort).
