Later this week we'll finally get to experience the conclusion to the Metal Gear Solid series as we know it. This is the thread for SPOLIER FREE impressions, pre-launch expressions of lust, links to good retrospectives and other such things.

Good Primers

- Metal Gear Solid Retrospective video series on Gametrailers offers a great refresher on the previous games.

- The Bonus Round has a nice set of video discussions about the series, with special guest David Hayter, the voice of Solid Snake.

- 1Up's Retronauts podcast covers the Metal Gear series, with no Metal Gear Solid 4 spoilers to worry about. (Hey look, you can stream it right from the very top of this post!)

- Brainy Gamer has a nice primer for people coming into Metal Gear Solid 4 completely cold, talking about the previous games in order of story timeline rather than release dates. It includes TONS of cutscene footage from the games.

I could not possibly be more excited.

Well, I guess I could, but you get my point.

What's with the bizarre Thursday release date, though?

Friday blockbuster movie mentality, I think. Can't imagine why else.

Zero, I have a feeling it's just going to be you and me holding down the fort. I'll bring the MRE's.

I'll be joining you guys in the foxhole, or would that be FOXHOLE?

I predict that the hot, mullet wearing mustachioed man on man action will eventually draw out a few more people. Or Nei, at the very least.

By the way, this link is much appreciated -- I was thinking of trying to hunt down something similar to pass the time, and you've saved me the trouble.

Thursday...? Dang, I guess will not get my copy until the following week!

I guess that will give me some time to play Ninja Gaiden... that is, if UPS employee would not steal my second NG copy (like I assume they did with first.)

Speak his name and he appears.

Nei, the frustrated desperation of Leo the VGCat always goes so perfectly with your posts.

I feel asleep.

I may be picking up a PS3 for this game this week.

Don't forget me, I look forward to thursday

It's gonna be great

I think I'm going to take a different tack with this game. I normally play straight and narrow, missing some of the kookier weapons and opportunities they present. There are basic tricks and moves in previous games that I didn't even know existed until after I finished them!

Can't wait for this. I've been keeping some money aside to afford my pre-order and a Dual Shock 3 to go with it. Combined with a few trades, I think I'll manage. Very excited to try out the online as well.

Since I don't own anything that can play it I'll just pretend that I am.

I am debating being in this boat at the moment. It's a lot of money for essentially one game, but those wacky Japanese and their insanely silly story-telling quirks will most likely win this round.

I'll be all over this on Thursday, I have my pre-order down and with all the info coming out it sounds like this'll be well worth it. I'm honestly wondering how long the multiplayer will last with goodjers. Not many were available for the beta and that wasn't exactly closed off.

It worked for Indiana Jones.

Right?

All over it. I wish I had completed MGS3 (I don't have Sustinence.. the controls.. suck.. bad!) , even though the little re-cap on the DVD was good, I want to how it all played out. I managed to find a torrent with all the MGS movies rolled into one, hopefully I can watch that without losing anything in the translation.

Old snake!

I didn't have a PS3 for the beta, but I will be there for some online. I really enjoyed MGO in Subsistence for a while, until everyone else in the world got way, way better than me (that's always the way it is with these online things), so I expect the same with this MGO. I should update my info so my PS3 tag in there, just in case.

I'll wait for someone to sell it cheap, then I'll pick it up. I can wait (I hope).

As the days pass I'm getting more and more excited. Thursday I fully expect to be sitting in front of my TV wearing an eyepatch and bandanna as I guide Snake through his newest adventure.

Well...maybe not the eyepatch, it might screw up my gaming. Unless I poke a few holes in it so I can see. After I take it off of course.

A buddy spoiled it for me. WOW! Just wow! You all are in for a treat.

I'm still on the fence about it. I don't really have any games in my queue, (I'm playing through overlord right now . . . yeah . . . ). So I might pull the trigger, but I just feel like I have to buy a ds3 along with the game and I'm not quite sure I want to plunk down ~120 for it all.

Anyone want to donate to the "save the monkeys, and get Sivok a PS3fund"?

I'm all over this as soon as I get a PS3...

It's a little sad that I feel the one upside to working 12 hours yesterday was that it made the day go by faster. One day left!

I'll be along with this too. I'm new to the PS 3 gaming environment, but I have a bluetooth set-up in the XMB and ready to try it somehow, someway while playing the game. So, someone is the 'host' and send's invites, or...? (btw, I'm Toxdon in PS 3 land).

That actually is a good question; honestly, we don't really know. Compared to the Xbox 360, online gaming on the PS3 is the wild west. If they have improved the multiplayer game id creation and server management stuff over the beta and made it more like other PS3 online games, then yeah, you should just need to just send out PSN friend invites (you can find PSN IDs here) and then we should be able to find each other in the game. However, in the MGO beta it was all an unusable mess that completely ignored the existing PSN ID architecture and had a variety of other problems that essentially made it nigh impossible to play with friends.

As such, I'm more or less just looking at the game as a single player experience, and if the multiplayer does end up working, well, that will be a nice bonus.

I'll be playing online this weekend. Of course, this is totally dependant on my ability to spend the $400+ I got on trade-in last week cleaning out my office. (like I am really going to go back and play Transformers for the 360...) Surprisingly, one of the titles that netted me the most cash back was "Lost: Via domus". I have no explanation for that.

So tonight at midnight, I'll be in line for the 80g PS3 bundle! Hooray!

I love the Retronauts.

Back on topic: I preordered this months ago, of course I'll pick it up Thurs, but unfortunately I won't get a chance to play until next week (friend's birthday party and a D&D game to go to this weekend).

Also, it's a little difficult for me to get the television sometimes, and I'm still working through all the missions in Mass Effect PC...

Anyway, I'm totally psyched for the game, it's just tempered with the knowledge that I won't get to play it at first (and I'll have to avoid yahoos with spoilers for a while).

So, if you don't already enjoy the MGS series, you may want to be careful about what methods you employ if you decide you want to give it a chance.

I've been in Iowa for training all week and can't wait to get back to Chicago tonight to pick it up.

I played/beat MGS 1 and 2, but missed three and all the in betweens. I've read many of the history and restrospectives and can't wait to see it in action. I worry about the already mentioned long cutscenes, but hopefully they will be entertaining enough for me to enjoy.

BRING IT ON!!!
