What old games have you dredged up recently and why?

I'm trying to play the PS1 version of XCOM on my PSP. It's every bit as obtuse and impenetrable as I remembered.

I reloaded Aliens vs Predator 2 a few months back. I had such a great time playing it I started looking at my old back catalogue for stuff to reload. I actually purchased the Diablo series years ago and never played it. Think I'll give it a whirl.

Oh and again, Tribes 2 for the win!

Soul Calibur III. Got to polish up for Soul Calibur IV! If I practice a few hours every day from now until then I'll only suck really really hard, instead of sucking unforgivably hard.

I still enjoy SC2 on the Gamecube and haven't tried 3. What platform do you play? I often see it for under $10 on the PS2 and am curious about it.

Mmmm... AvP2. I love that game SO GODDAMN HARD.

3 was PS2 only. It's a good Soul Calibur game with some neat features like character creation and unlockable weapons but the single-player campaign mode has some serious AI problems (there are some fights in the last level where I'd use cheats to get infinite life and one-hit kills and I'd STILL lose). The new characters are interesting and cool and they stay away from the guest character goofiness with the exception of a KOS-MOS costume buried deep in the custom character stuff.

I didn't like Soul Calibur 3 that much. I had Soul Calibur 2 on Gamecube and absolutely loved it, but 3 rubbed me the wrong way. It wasn't so bad against other people, except for my room-mate who is ungodly good at anything Soul Calibur, but the single-player was supercrap. 6 way-too-easy fights followed by 1 way-too-hard followed by 1 actually-impossible. The A.I. was all over the place.

Soul Calibur 4 has some pretty big changes which I'm pretty excited about. The destructible armor seems especially cool. I don't know which system I want to get this for, because I want both Yoda and Darth Vader!

I am currently surfing around to dig up an address for a MajorMud BBS that I can give that a run again.

The favorite game ever thread has me very nostalgic right now.

Well you might be in luck, because it seems they're making it ridiculously Star Wars-y. Vader's "super duper secret apprentice" from Force Unleashed is now in and I've heard rumors that Yoda and Vader will be cross-platform DLC, and that there are still 2 more Star Wars characters they haven't revealed yet.

Y'know, promotions and cute little bonuses aside... I'm not sure we need 5 Star Wars characters in Soul Calibur. That's almost more light sabers than normal swords.

Armed and Dangerous

Why? Because it runs smooth as glass on my new computer, and it's a fun shooter with a sense of humor. I love the jetpack levels, but the gun turret levels are probably my favorite.

I just remembered I picked up Armed & Dangerous from a bargain bin like eight months ago and never got around to installing it. I should dig it up and give it a try. I keep hearing good things about it.

Since I have a tendency to keep old PC's around I put together a Win95 gaming rig so I can play the following oldies:
-Fallout 1 & 2
-Wing Commander - Kilrathi Saga (WC1,2,3 plus expansions)
-Warhammer 40k - Rites of War and Final Liberation
-System Shock 2
-Starship Troopers

Oh and after reading everybody else's favorites, X-Com Collectors edition is going on that box also.

I forgot about Star Control 2. i actually have a copy of that kicking around on a compilation cd. Good stuff.

Warcraft 3 TFT Single player custom games. Because my new modem and isp is not here for another few days (after quite a while not having true highspeed) . God I need my fix. -sentence fragments, grammatical errors

I've been playing some Master of Orion 1 and 2 for the last couple weeks. Overall, I think I prefer MOO1. I like the way the tech trees work better.

I went through that exact nostalgia need early this year. Get yourself a copy of mTelnet (or something that supports ANSI escape sequences over telnet), and check this out. There's a bunch of MajorBBSes publicly available, with a bunch of the old classics available.

I just played through Freedom Force a week ago and now I'm onto Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich. It still holds up beautifully. It's a shame the series ended. Can anyone recommend any games with similar gameplay mechanics?

I agree, but I prefer the combat in MoO 2 over 1's Heroes of Might and Magic style. I've been playing a lot of GalCiv2 lately, though that hardly qualifies as old.

Metal Gear Acid! I forgot how much fun that game can be! I sort of forgot to be stealthy in the level I played last night, but I made it through just fine.

I tend to fire up Myth and Myth II every now and then. Such fantastic games.

Lately I just fired up Rise of Nations and Freelancer. I recently picked up Freelancer on the cheapo rack somewhere and have been having quite a bit of fun with it. Rise of Nations just sounded like fun again

Now that I mentioned the Myth series, though, I may have to reinstall those and give them yet another go. I really never tire of them.

Damn it, you're going to make me reinstall too!

I picked up Fallout 2 recently and have spent several hours with it. Whereas the first game was fun and interesting from the get-go, this one feels kind of uninspired, at least so far. The combat is also kind of crazy. I'm being forced to repeat fights over and over, then spend hours resting after every one, even on medium difficulty level against what should be weak opponents.

Does it get better at some point?

The way I will polish for Soul Calibur IV is to shine up my ass for a sound beating. Might just stick with Soul Calibur XBLA, unless Namco, as a Japanese developer, would get some preferential treatment from Microsoft and be able to have Soul Calibur and Soul Calibur IV out on the same date, or consecutive days, in July? It would be a pipe dream but cool in a way for them to have a VMU on the side of the screen during gameplay. Those silly little VMUs..

I loved the idea of the VMU... I thought it was a brilliant step forward. Sadly, for this innovation, hard drives have virtually eliminated the need for external memory, but I would still like to see something done with the Wii and DS or PS3 and PSP, or 360 and Zune in the same vein as the VMU.

I'm not sure if this counts, but some other thread here the other day made me re-install Oblivion and I've been playing it again with a bunch of mods.

I'm not sure how far you are, but the game really isn't very good until you leave your village. From there it starts getting good, and generally just gets better. The combat in the beginning is pretty brutal.

Me too! I spent all last weekend installing tons of mods, and I'm really enjoying getting lost in that world again. I'm thinking of trying my hand at creating a dungeon or something.

Arise!

I found a jewel case copy of Arcanum over the weekend and installed it last night. The timing was good since I've been getting a hankerin' to play something steam-punkish after revisiting Rise of Legends and seeing some steampunk inspired pen and paper RPG supplements in a local gaming store.

For some reason I had a hard time getting it to work but after installing a fan made patch (from here), it finally started. It was too late to do more than explore the character creation options and wander around for a bit, but skimming though the manual has me excited.

That's just bizarre. I opened this thread thinking of the exact same title but wondered if it was too new to qualify. Either way, Metal Gear Acid 2 is a PSP title that I just keep coming back to even years after its release. While I own both, I find part two to be leagues above the original in both presentation (colorful "cell-shading") and subtle yet critical gameplay design tweaks.

I think the portable nature of MGA2 coupled with the strat/tactical genre it falls in makes it the perfect "on the go" PSP title. Much like playing a game of chess, I can enjoy it on the train to and from work in a relaxed manner instead of feverishly pounding away at buttons, looking like a loon. There's also a bunch of replay value in that there's over 500 different cards to collect and multiple playthroughs are necessary for completionists.

I'm not sure how well the Acid series sold on PSP, but I get a sense that it was woefully under-appreciated due to its radical departure from the traditional Metal Gear formula. It's a shame because its one of the freshest takes on an established franchise that I've experienced in years and also one of the best games available on the PSP.

Now that Titan Quest gold edition is out on Steam, I (re)bought that and am playing the heck out of it. I'm trying new classes, and now that I have a new video card and 1920x1200 monitor (thanks to Crysis), the game seems brand new; which is good, because I really enjoyed it the first time through back in the day. It's a great Summer clickfest kind of game.

I have reinstalled Tie fighter, Tie Fighter vs Xwing and have been doing my best to keep the rebel scum down!

Yeah, I much prefer Metal Gear Acid 2, but I just bought Acid 1 and decided to play through it for a bit. I've since put it down, though, because MGS4 had come out. Now that I've finished MGS4, I've picked up Final Fantasy 3 on DS again. And every now and then, I pop in Pokemon Pearl. Not sure why. I just have to keep in touch with Dood and Bread and Soup and Coonpuppy.
