Madden 2009 Online League *Renamed*

Pages

Ok - I know everyone hates EA blah blah blah - that's not what this post is about. From my understanding - the next iteration of Madden will have significant online league functions (we will see what is delivered) and will address many of the issues that have plagued it when it comes to online play. I played quite a bit of 2008 and while it was no 2K5 - it was not too bad either. If EA actually delivers the league functionality as advertised - is anyone going to be picking this one up besides me?

I got burned by picking up 08 last year, so I'll wait to see who picks it up first before deciding to buy it. I know there were/are some 2K8 football leagues going on here, I didn't like the gameplay of 2K8 so I passed.

I will if it is a good game, I'll be waiting for reviews of course.

I still have fond memories of my Chiefs beating your Packers in the 2k5 playoffs, Spy!

Madden 2008 came close to matching the mark that the final last-gen versions of Madden did.

I'm hoping 2009 is the one that finally gets over the hump. Please, get precision passing down the way you did on the old Xbox!

Well trowan if you ever want a game - let me know. I enjoyed Madden 08 - not perfect, but not bad - even to satisfy Legion - I thought the passing was better. Still no throw over the receivers left shoulder though :). Ahhh Swampy - you wound me, you actually beat my Panthers when I got back from Iraq. That was a great game - you had come from nowhere (I had beaten you earlier in the season) and just started shutting down my so-so run game and my vaunted passing game, not that I carry a bitter memory or anything :).

The passing was better in Madden 08 from Madden 07. It still fails my fly pattern litmus test, however. I'm not satisfied until precision passing allows you to "lead" in 360 degrees, not just "up OR left OR right". Passers need to be able to lead the receiver ahead AND over the outside shoulder. Madden 05 on the original Xbox actually started getting this right, but then everything was started over from scratch for the next generation engine.

Sometimes, your passes in Madden will float to the outside, but it's part of built-in passing inaccuracy rather than something intentionally controlled.

Well, rest assured now that I have no digital Trent Green to play, those slant outs I used to pull with some success won't do as well...

Those 2k5 seasons we ran were good times though!

Yes...yes they were.

I'll give it a try, but I suspect it'll be hard to feel comfortable with it after 2k5+2k8. It'll be hard to adapt to picking premade, real teams again!

Don't listen to Legion, Madden 08 sucked

<--will be waiting for Legion review before buying

I go to UD, so I have to pick it up, just to play as Flacco.

Don't forget Ben Patrick!

... assuming he still makes the Cardinals roster.

Yeah, because I am the trade mark raven's fan. Without a 360 though.....

Yep. I totally missed the APF2k8 boat due to real life, and as usual my attempts at baseball are in a flaming wreck on the ground, but I am hoping to get back into GWJ football and hockey this fall.

Well, we may still be doing APF leagues then, Swampy...

If I don't get Madden, I'll pick up APF

I am a sucker for real rosters and so this is a pre-order for me. Madden has its foibles, but it has been enjoyable this year. IF, and I say IF, the league play features really are as robust - a GWJ League is a must. I lay first dibs on the mighty Colts :).

I call dibs on the mighty.... errr, I call dibs on the "mediocrity forever" Chiefs!

Well, you just shut me out of any Madden league!

I kid! I kid!

Seriously, I would not be surprised if we are still playing APFB come next season. Not only are we in our third season, but we had a seriously good time drafting teams this last time around. I know a few of us would like another crack at our draft strategies.

I rented the last Madden, but honestly, it just felt wrong. 2K Football has a different feel, and for better or worse, I just like it better. Madden feels like I am trying to pudh my guys around, while 2K feels like I am merely guiding them.

I'm sure I will give Madden a rent when it comes out, and if it feels good, I would be interested in a league, even if I cannot get my Chiefs. I had the Lions in the last 2K5 league I was in, so I am a glutton for punishment.

But truth be told, while I would love to see an updated version of APFB, this game will serve my needs for a long time. The only reason Madden gets a look, is that NFL rosters are nice to have. But I have found not having NFL rosters is a huge bonus in itself. The last time I had this much fun with an online football league was our old FBPro 98 leagues. It's been that long since I felt like the team I was playing was my team, including when I get my the Chiefs. All of us in the APFB league chose the makeup of they kind of team we are running. Even the generics are chosen to be balanced, run, or pass heavy per area.

All that, and it is the good ol' 2K football we have enjoyed for years. Madden will sell a ton, but it has a long ways to go to become my game of choice.

Browns

Spy = Colts
Swampy = Chiefs
Trown = Browns
I know Legion will want the Jags

I never played APFB - the lack of "current" rosters kills it for me. Even if it means I just play a few seasons of a Franchise in Madden - thats worth it to me. I am hoping the League function will really bring more GWJ'ers back, I miss the 2K5 days.

Jayhawk can have the Chefs, I'll take the J-E-T-S-JETS-JETS-JETS!

Just a glutton for shaky QB situations, huh Swampy?

I know Legion will want the Jags :)

I never have to claim my team early.

Well, as I am in north central Connecticut, having grown up in southerastern CT, and during the days of "Antenna TV football" (meaning that I was barraged with the Dallas Cowboys on National TV almost every weekend growing up, I have always been somewhat schitzo in my favorite football team. I was a huge Cowboys fan growing up. When the lost Tom Landry and the old style Cowboys mentatity, the team just became another big money team, I lost that faith slowly, and switched to my backup, the Chiefs. Now that I am up noth, I might be persuaded to root for the Pats, but I hate Belechek (sp). The Jets get some coverage up this way, and they are always the abused stepchild of the tri-state NFL group, so I kind of root for them.

So yup, if a REAL Jets fan steps up and wants them you may see me picking the Pats. After that who knows?

I was an old football Cardinals fan myself. My family moved to KC when I was in junior high and Bidwell moved to Arizona. I was never a huge Chiefs fan, but I got excited when Lamar Hunt finally cleaned house, and brought in Carl Peterson. First thing he did was hire Shottenheimer. Not long after that we picked up season tickets. Those wwere some of the most fun years of being a football fan, even if they crashed and burned in the playoff every year.

Now, if Bidwell had not moved the team, I might still be a Big Red fan, but I sure would not have enjoyed it.

Oh shiz, just saw this thread. I too am a sucker for current and accurate rosters. Put me down for the Titans.

I am down as well!

Drop me down for the Bears.

Oh Dear lord what did I just do.

I am down for the Seahawks Amazed I could get into this thread so late and still claim them. Seahawk fans must be too elitist to play a commoner game like Madden.

Seattle still has a team?

I'll play...so we're grabbing teams now, several months in advance??? Well, if so, and as it seems Chi and Bal are already gone, I'll try out Los Chargers of San Diego. I'll give this a rent long enough to try out the leagues...but I may still have to keep playing 2k8!

I would be willing to trade the Bears for a team of equal caliber.

Anyone have Sister Mary's Home for the Blind?
