Age of Conan General Discussion

Ok so thus far I love the game it's a lot of fun and beautiful to look at. That being said I would like to say that the stealth system is horrible. My main is an assassin and for a system that has a light based element you would expect there to be a lot of dark places, but starting off about 80% of the content so far has been "unsneakable". I have my hide skill maxed for my level and I get spotted a majority of the time totally blowing my ever so needed stealth strike on the first of two targets. I wouldn't have a problem with this, because truth be told it's more realistic, but the assasins are so squishy that stealth is neccessary on multiple mobs.

How far have you gotten? Whitesands is horrible for this at early levels.
Underhalls will be your dream.
And once off Tortage it gets better trust me. Sneaking past mobs is difficult during the day light hours but once you see that gorgeous sun set, It is business time, I know this because that is when I put on my business socks.

Heh yeah my guy is at lvl 13 if I recall, it's all a blur of bloodletting at this point. It's good to know that it gets better outside of tortage. Also the fact that it wont always be day time will be nice because it makes me want to cry when I can't sneak up on a guy who is sitting down with his back turned to me. Ironically this is my first time playing a stealth class in an MMO...and it just figures that it's one of the hardest to get used to.

edit: Also is there some specific way to use a combo from stealth in the later levels, or can you only use a single attack?

Effort: A
Execution: D-

Don't be hatin.
I couldn't remeber all the other words.

Crafting/Gathering Update:

So I went out to Poitain and found the 6 Gathering skill trainers and the Crafting skill trainers. You get quests from each of the gatherers to get some basic mats you can find in the nearby Wild Lands. You need 20 of each mat for each quest.

The resource nodes comes with "health bars" and for each 10% of health they have, you can tap it once (which takes away 10% of the resource). Two people can work on the same node (Spy eventually joined me). Skinning was just rough leather, but what you've gathered from before doesn't count. You have to gather 20 more to get credit for the quest (and, occasionally, the collection doesn't seem to register).

I'd suggest making map notes for each node you find, because they don't (currently) show up on the map. It makes it much easier to go back if you are trying to complete the quests or if we'll need them later. Cotton was the hardest to see, being a small bush with little white flowers at the top.

Also note, they don't glow like treasure or quest items, either. You need to scan with your mouse/pointer and look for them that way.

The game is down for a couple of hours, so maybe some of this will change in the next patch, but for now, that's how it is working.

[Edit]: Also note, you can't trade resources to help others complete their quests. Everyone one of them has to be done by the individual.

Just an FYI. Last night I misspoke on vent saying that the CE xp modifier ring was .02%. It seems that was a typo and the bonus is actually 2%.

Once you collect 20 of the resource type, you are then given a quest to collect a "rare" resource that you get from the nodes. Tin from the copper nodes, Black Silver from the Silver nodes, etc... As a warning, these can take a long time to get. I've gotten some in as few as 30 gathers, while some have taken over 100 and I still haven't gotten the rare type.

The Patcher Announcements say 7pm GMT, which I though was 3pm EST.

Pre-emptive fix for you.

Not again! I don't think I can handle another GMT to CST to EST + DST - BLT^BBQ discussion.

Server will be back online at 7PM Moon Standard Time.

Bah - I was so close to lvl 34 the bastids.

So yeah, it was just pushed back another hour. So 8PM GMT.

34? Damn! you're definitely kicking it in high gear before your cruise! You were like 4 levels behind me when we started yesterday.

Funcom needs to conform like the rest of the free world and put everything in EST. Between GMT and DST I'm going to have an aneurism.

Reminds me of WoW with the GWJ crew: I moved the week of launch, and by the time I was able to start playing (a week after launch), everyone was long gone from the early levels. When I get around to playing this, I'll basically end up playing it like I wind up playing every mmo: solo.

I agree. My Amazon order (thankfully for a second copy) just got pushed back to July 25.

They have no date for mine, either. Lame. Oh well.... So I ran out and bought the last one at Best Buy in the Chicagoland area. I was gonna buy all the copies, but they had only one.

I just bought 2 at best buy out in chicago sir.

So you may have been lied to.

Why are you guys so good and enabling?

Anyways, this one time (last night), I was fighting this pirate as a Herald of Xotli, and two more guys showed up and I was like "Nuh uh!" and transformed into this awesome demon and totally owned all three of them with my sword.

Good times.

Well, with the game being new and everything being fresh, we definitely have a fair share of people with alt-itis. I don't think you'll be wanting for company. Beyond that, it's fairly easy to get out of Tortage around level 20... and you'll find people willing to support your efforts from my experience. If you are PvE, though, I don't see any reason why you can't enjoy the game playing single (or with wife, as I do) for a long time and enjoying the game immensely.

There was this one time I snuck up on a guy in stealth who was sitting down facing away from me and he totally spidey sensed me, broke my stealth, and called 2 of his friends over to come stomp my face. I was like "Nuh uh!" and started to sprint away only to run into a pack of gorillas that then proceeded to destroy me utterly. So we kinda had similar experiences...except well not.

Now 6pm EST...

The launch is now starting to not look so good.

I would not call the sky falling just yet.
FunCom has proven they have no idea what a deadline is for.

Overall this launch has been 10x smoother than any other MMO launch I have seen.

As long as it comes up at 6pm and stays up all night, I will be ok. If they delay again or there is another huge outage tomorrow....

The purpose of a launch is to let people start PLAYING the game. Not play GMT math. I hope they haven't started the "pay" clock yet.

Free 30 day subscription with the purchase of the game takes care of that.

You got yours for free? Mine cost $50!

The way I'm flip flopping on classes I will have 8 level 10 characters when you start. I'll be down with grouping.

Well I would rather have the game released and deal with some maintence and patching. Then have another 2-3 month delay.

In a perfect world yes this should all be fixed and we should have 24/7 uptime. But this has become the norm. And the game is a hell of a lot more stable than every other in the genre at this point.

I have been very pleased with my stealth ability. I have only had it broken about twice in my 20 level career as an Assassin in Tortage. But I don't use it on every combat. Usually I scout in stealth (and can get within melee and within the 180 degree rear hemisphere) with no problems. Maybe I will be less satisfied outside Tortage.

I have had same level characters in PvP glide right by me, bumping me, in White Sands, in broad daylight, and yet I can still see my bald head and underwears. This was all on Sat and Sun, though. Maybe the detection rules have changed.

While i tease Bear and others about their alts i do encourage it for people who have no idea about the classes and how they work in game. I'd also recommend that you take them to 16-20 range. While the game changes again after 20 you should have a good basis on what a class is capable of at that point. Stopping around the 8 to 10 range doesn't show enough what a class has to offer.
