Boom Blox

Sure, sure we all sort of scoffed at it. Or at least I did -- I frankly don't trust things with speilberg's stamp of approval. But I just read the review at 1up, and heck if I'm not intrigued. Apparently its a watershed game for the wii and for puzzle games in general...this is at least getting a rental if not a purchase.

Here's a link to the review: http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3167698&p=44

Doesn't get much more positive than that. I won't get it now, but soon for sure.

Spielberg is a big time gamer. Has been for about eva. He played some Wii games and was meh about them. Then had this idea. Got ahold of EA (or vice versa) and Boom Blox is the result. I've read several review, previews and the physics engine is amazing. Gigantic editor to make or modify any of the 400 games. Has several modes.

I heard them raving about this on the 1up podcast. It looks like a lot of fun. Maybe not for $49.99, but if it hits PSN or Live for half that price (it most likely will jump multiplatform) I'd definitely grab it.

Really? You think so? It seems like the motion controls are kind of the point, and it's definitely more than the sixaxis could elegantly handle.

To me this is a game I wouldn't want to see on any other platform. It seems like exactly the kind of game the Wii has been waiting for, one where the motion controls are fun, intuitive and integral to the game experience (not just a gimmick or bullet point).

It isn't being released for PSN or Live. It is only for the Wii.

In a recent interview (that I'm not going to bother tracking down), someone on the Boom Blox project said that now the wii version is done, there's a strong possibility that they will investigate other platforms.

From what I've heard about Boom Blox, the Wii's motion controls really do play a big part in how well the game works. So, even if it did drop on multiple platforms, I'd definitely opt for the Wii version.

I want to get this game. I just got a Wii and I need something other than quick rounds of Wii Sports. But I'm not sure about spending $50 on it.

I'm hoping that Gamefly ships this one today. It looks like another game that I can add to the, still way too small, stable of Wii games that my daughter and I can play together.

... yet

There's speculation it will.

IGN has a good video of two folks there playing MP with it.

Yeah, and there was speculation that Final Fantasy 7 was being remade for PS2.

I'll be buying this today, but due to GTA4 I won't be playing it for like a billion months.

Sigh... you're going to put off experiencing pure joy for what appears to be more Grand Theft Auto. I weep for you, on the inside.

Actually, I haven't played either but I couldn't resist.

But this is Boom Blox. Boom... Blox. Booooooom. Blox. Not some overblown mega budget anime circle jerk cgi fanboy fest of a game. Plus it's like totally EA and we know they are all about whoring out to as many platforms as they can.

Could be a perfect fit for the "you know it's in development" MS-Mote!

I hear the cell phone version is totally awesome and the people who worked on it are extremely handsome. That's just what I've heard.

BOOM BLOX IS AWESOME! Karla and I just finished playing the Jenga-lilke game for a couple hours. Really easy to get into and very tense/giddy to play as the block towers get more complex. I haven't explored the rest of the game too much, so I can't say for sure if it's worth the $50 price tag, but it's got a great feel.

Well, I won't be able to pick it up until at least next week since I'm leaving tomorrow for my brother's wedding. But I've heard too many good things about this game. Even critics are loving it, and they've probably been pretty burned out from mediocre casual games for the Wii.

Between Okami, this and Wii Fit, it looks like that thin layer of dust on my machine is finally going to be left off for a while.

It is no Joint Ops, but it will do.

It is now the only game my fiancee will play. She's given up Peggle (PC) and Wii Sports.

Same here. If I had a Wii I would be all over Boom Blox. Especially as a change of pace from GTA.

My wife and I played it for a short while last night (mostly getting thru training and the first few 'Explore' rounds.) Lot's of fun. What a physics engine. She was giddy to knock things down:>) Some cool, yet steady hand strategy. Makes you ponder spatial strategy, then let's you let it rip for fun and tumbling. (and I just had to throw a few balls at those crits to hear them squeal and tumble about...she wasn't too happy about that:>)

Sounds like you were just at my house! We picked Boom Blox up this evening and we're having a blast (both literally and figuratively) playing the game. My five year old son absolutely adores when we clear a stage and all the critters start cheering, and my wife hasn't let go of the wiimote for what I think is an entirely too long duration. This game is what would happen if you would cross-pollinate Gary's Mod, Jenga, and the Crash Mode from Burnout. It's fantastic. The physics engine is very well tailored for this game, and here's a scenario that managed to impress me quite a bit:

You need to throw a bowling ball at 10 pieces of wood standing upright, which all have a blue 'blox' on top that you have to knock off. After trying once or twice and not succeeding in knocking all the blue blox to the ground, I moved the camera around so instead of coming at the 'pins' head on, I was more or less at a 90 degree angle. What I ended up doing is throwing the ball at a long piece of wood that was next to the pins, and this piece of wood went flying right into the pins, knocking everything over. That really put a smile on my face, since it was obvious that the stage was asking to be tackled just like a makeshift bowling alley but, in a way, also rewarded some simple abstract thinking.

Am I the only one who isn't impressed? Granted, I haven't played yet but after watching 10-12 video clips, I just don't see what's so engaging about the game. Anyone care to sell me on at least a rental...?

Just picked up. I think I played the first adventure level 20 times trying to get a gold. Got golds on further levels but still can not get a gold on that damn level! The game is great, fun puzzles that use physics. Instead of shooting portals you throw a ball. I really like this resurgence in clever puzzle games. The technology is there to make new types of puzzles and we're starting to see them.

Sounds like this is the perfect game to get to play with the fiancee. Can anyone recommend any other great co-op game for this thing?

We just watched every preview video I could find. Now we must have this game!

I played with mine and now she's abandoned Peggle for Boom Blox. Unplugging the wii and taking it to the parents house because my parents, brothers (hard core gamers) and nieces want to play.

UPDATE: deleted some text (too fanboi-ish).

If you like devious physics puzzles, this game is perfect. If you don't, then you're probably dying of a brain tumor that makes you a {ableist slur}.

Tell me, when did you first experience these symptoms?

I hear that this is one of three games Spielberg worked on with EA, and that the others will come out later. What do you think the odds are that we'll see them all packaged as one title in a year or so?

I really want to check this out, but my Wii is getting way too much Mario Kart and Smash Bros mileage. I'l pick this up when I get it at a slightly lower price.
