Metal Gear Online Catch-All

I'm weak. On my way out of town I saw an EB and decided to pull in. They had a few pre-order packs left so ... so I pre-ordered again. Good news is I have a proper key! Bad news is the whole lack of dignity thing.

I'll move the $5 onto something else later. Yeah, that's the ticket.

YOU, sir, cannot make fun of me ever again!

Ye gods! Even I, Spendy McSpenderson, wasn't even considering doing that.

I did, however, send an email to that support address that I'm sure will be ignored by them with great vigor.

Konami made a post on the official Playstation blog. You those of you with partial codes might find some help there.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/

from what I read it looked like they were trying to figure something out but aren't quite there yet.

Thanks for the info!

I'm in on this beta. It's about time theres something I really want to play on the PS3 and this is definitely near the top. Registering for a Konami ID is a bit asinine and a complete pain at that but it all works in the end. I've downlladed and am ready as ever to choke people from behind.

Good God, who is responsible for this Konami ID website? Damn thing resets every 2nd page, sending me back to try again. What a joke. So people are actually getting through this and getting IDs? Hard to believe.

The download and install went fine. The update, though, doesn't seem to be working for me, in either the bittorrent or standard option.

It took me several tries to get the update to run, give it a go in another hour or so. But be warned, be ready to walk away and leave it updating for up to 8 hours.

My question is, isn't this what our PSN IDs are supposed to be for?

Really makes one appreciate XBL GamerTags.

Yup, I got mine OK.

Konami ID registration finally started working without problem.

Yay! They emailed me a replacement code, and the beta is now downloading. Now, to see about this Konami ID thing.

At least for the beta, Konami is not using PSN as their network infrastructure, sort of like FF11 on the Xbox 360. Let's just hope that in the final version they get on the PSN ball.

Hahaha, if only. Aside from the stupidity of the requested info, it seems to think every ID I suggest unavailable, no matter how outlandish it may seem.

Edit: Scratch that, it seems as though the word "zero" is a reserved word for both Konami and "Game" IDs, so my user names won't be able to match my preferred internet identity. Lame!

We can help you come up with other '90s post-grunge band inspired user names if you'd like.

I have a selection of Better Than Ezras you might be interested in.

Thanks, but I think I'll just be "ethan_kfe."

(That is if the confirmation email ever arrives.)

The main problem I had with trying to fill out the Konami ID page is all the crazy restrictions. I need a User ID and a Game ID? No capital letters allowed, the game ID password can only consist of numbers, etc. Convoluted to say the least.

This is all part of some big Kojima snow job. Just you wait, the beta will start and we'll all be playing some Metal Gear Solid skateboarding game.

That would not be the worst Metal Gear yet.

Didn't that actually happen in a manner of speaking? I seem to remember a Konami skateboarding game that had Snake in it.

There was a skateboarding mode in Metal Gear Solid 2, and it was awful. So yeah, I'm gonna label that as a "been there, done that." I like to think there are other extreme sports that Snake and co. are going to embark on, like wakeboarding, or rodeo riding. Maybe Sumo wrestling.

Now that I think abut it, that sounds way fun, I hope it is a bait and switch.

Seconded, for days now I've not been able to get all the way through it. And what's the difference between my Konami ID and my Game ID?

So does anyone know when the beta actually goes live? Is it a 12:01am sort of thing or just sometime tomorrow?

SECOND. Downloaded the 781MB (took forever) and then installed (quick), and then have to endure an update (running at home as I am here at work).

The p2p option doesn't seem so bad, but the inability to throttle the upload to leave room for the protocol overhead is hampering my download speed. It's still going to take 3 hours at the rate I'm going.

I averaged about 150kb/s through Bittorrent P2P download, not too bad.

Argh, the US Manual only shows properly in IE.

You just have to tell Firefox or Opera to use Unicode.

View -> Character Encoding -> Unicode (UTF-8) in Firefox, View -> Encoding -> Unicode -> UTF-8 in Opera.

Unfortunately, the problem is a poorly configured web server, which is sending one character encoding in the HTTP header, while the correct Unicode encoding is listed in the document itself. Sadly, this means the character encoding is reset with each HTTP request, so you have to keep changing it to browse with those browsers. But they do work.

Delayed!

Alas, such is life. I'm not terribly surprised given the way the download/sign in traffic was handled . This is sort of the point of having a beta, to work these things out so they don't crash day 1.

So go back to your lives citizens, continue to be productive for at least one day more.

Geezy chreezy. I was getting a whopping 5kb/s. It literally took 2 days straight of having my PS3 on to download it. I was using P2P. Could be that my roommate got crappy DSL over the vastly superior Chicago cable internet. Stupid roommate.

We would like to add that due to the above reasons, we will be making the following changes to the schedule:
1) Start date: Planned for 04/25/2008 24:00(PDT). While the start is planned for the weekend, it may change due to unforseen circumstances.
3) Beta Test closure: This will now be on 05/11/2008 at 24:00(PDT) rather than 05/05/2008 at 24:00(PDT)

I see the problem. There's no Phase 2! Konami's run by frickin underpants gnomes.
