Stuff You Know You Should Like But Don't

Firefly.

Get a running start.

I thought Kat's disdain for Firefly had been pretty much established. She shouldn't get too much grief for it.

Yeah, this isn't the first time I've expressed a negative opinion about Firefly (and I catch flak for it every time :)). But I did want to clarify - I don't have disdain for Firefly. I simply don't like it. There's a difference. Disdain implies that I think Firefly is unworthy of notice, or that everyone who does like it is stupid. Whereas I just don't like the show - and it doesn't go beyond that.

That said, Browncoats do make me a little nervous. But then again, so do Superfans of any species. Especially Card Captor Sakura otaku. They're the worst. :)

QFT. The latter reason is why i'll probably never touch any of the Harry Potter books. The fans scare the ever-loving crap out of me.

Being a fan of anything even remotely geeky necessitates developing an immunity to "Superfans".

Something you like has fans that are absolutely {ableist slur} in their worship of it. Just gotta accept that and deal.

Hell, if you can still enjoy sex after all of the horrible things people have done to that pursuit, watching a TV show that people dress up after is cake.

Case in point:

Fortunately, those types are often countered by these:

Books that Neil Gaiman likes. I LOVE Neil Gaiman. LOVE LOVE LOVE. Sadly, I've never been able to finish a single book that I've bought that has had a positive Neil Gaiman quote on the cover.

With that, let me add, Neil Gaiman. I couldn't get through American Gods (I'll probably try again in the future). I read Stardust in two days, and thought the film was superior.

You're really out of luck there, Gaiman's best work is in The Sandman comics. :p

For me also I'll say superhero movies and comics. I've never been interested or entertained by either. I think it's because when you create a character with supernormal ability, you have to give them an opponent who also has supernormal abilities. And the entire plot then becomes a conflict between these two nearly-matched superbeings. If you're going to have a conflict between two people who are matched, why bother to make then super powered in the first place? And if its some sort of power fantasy, why bother with the opponent?

I hate to be the one to stick up for superhero comics, but normal people getting into a tiff has little chance of looking like this.

I don't get the whole "should like" thing, if you take it in terms of "everyone else likes it". Who cares about what other people think I should like? There are only two opinions: my opinion and the wrong opinion.

(The wrong opinion has two subsets: You're Stupid And Wrong, and That's Interesting, But You're Still Wrong.)

Now, if we're talking in terms of things I should like, because it has all the stuff I usually love, but it just doesn't work for me, then that's another thing entirely. Unfortunately, the only thing that comes to mind is the opening two thirds of I Am Legend (the last third is obviously horrible), which I thought was ok on first viewing, but is falling increasingly flat in retrospect. And I love post-apocalyptic settings.

Yeah, count me in with the Firefly dislikers. I really don't understand the appeal..

I'll add another one: indie films.

Most of the "BEST CANNE FILM EVER 2008" crap I can't stand because it's either too slow, doesn't make any sense, or is so disjointed that I get bored. I know what the directors are trying to do most of the time, but.. ugh.

Polio vaccines! So over-rated.

+1

I don't get comic books, superheros, or comic book culture at all.

My list includes all the Superman movies and, by extension, Christopher Reeves and Margot Kidder (come on, she's leading lady material?), each of the 22 billion attempts at retelling the same damn Batman story, and the TV show Heros.

WoW - I do not understand why this game has so many playing, it just has poor game design for a action RPG.
Apple - There not all that!
Wii - I give Nintendo credit for pull off the biggest con, recycling Gamecubes.
PS3/Blu-Ray/HD - SCAM!
Will Ferrell - If I see Will Ferrell's dumbass in a movie again it will be too soon.
DS/PSP - Just cannot get into them.

To rip things mentioned by others, armedbushido in particular because it's right there:

WoW. I don't get it. At all. It's boring, and completely lacks fun of any kind.
Apple. Yep. Me too. I don't see what's good about their products at all. The physical designs have gotten nicer but that doesn't justify the extra cost for something I can't use for any of the things I want to do.
Wii. Yep. Don't get that either. My experiences with the PS3's motion control in the sixaxis haven't furthered my opinion of that type of control for games either. I'll pass.

And stolen from earlier in the thread:
Radiohead. I agree. I don't see what the big deal is. People call it revolutionary and I don't see how.
Battlestar Galactica. I watched one episode. I refuse to watch another. It was crap.
Arrested Development. I just don't find most of it funny at all.
Every single thing Joss Whedon has been involved in that wasn't titled Firefly. They all sucked. All of them. Buffy, Angel, you name it. By all rights I should be at least a solid fan of the shows, based on opinions from people I normally agree with often, but I'm not. There are no words for the depth of my hate for those TV shows.

Lost.....everyone around me is in some sort of lost haze where low production values and crappy seat of your pants story telling are awesome.....I don't get it......If it ain't HBO I say NO!!

Also add Heroes and TF2 to my list.

COD4

Love the game, can't bring myself to play it.

If it helps you any, the more I played multiplayer the less I liked it.

When Futurama decided it should/could be a serious show. Parasites Lost, Luck of the Fryish, Jurassic Bark, The Day the Earth Stood Stupid, Time Keeps on Slipping, etc

My roommate got the series on DVD and we're watching this funny show with a f*cking lobster doctor and then there's these episodes that just end with the fantasy world they've created solidly stomping on Fry's beanbag. I feel that I should appreciate a show that gets me to care enough about the characters that I really do feel sad for them when they fail, but here I just end up feeling sad and then angry at the people who wrote the damn episode.

Heroes

I'll go with you on that. I watched a few episodes and it felt very laden with soap opera melodroma. Not my cup of tea.

All right, I don't think this one has been mentioned yet. I'm a comic book fan but didn't like the Watchmen. (Sorry booty)

I think it's because I have the attention span of a 5 year old.

I third the motion of sadness over the death of cute and the adoption of Heroin Chic! I also join the club that never went for Blade Runner, and who hopes to never see Will Ferrel.

I'm going to show my backside and risk incurring wrath for disliking the following: Most of all the NPR programming I've heard. Car talk isn't bad, though. (Admitting you don't like NPR is like wearing a sign that says your IQ is relative to your shoe size. But there it is.) Coffee. Most types of tea. Gangster Rap. Cellphones in any situations but emergencies. Illegal drugs. Most show tunes. Coconut. Salad. Huge vehicles. Handguns. "Bling". Most grunge rock. Dogs small enough to be treated like fashion accessories.

The following movies or books: "The Piano", "Thelma and Louise" (How do women love that garbage?), Most Jim Carrey flicks (though the guy himself seems very nice), anything Tolkien wrote...

Vapid blonde swimsuit models. I'm probably the only guy who would be miserable at the Playboy mansion

The original Dune series. Tried reading them, got all the way to chapterhouse dune but they were a snoozefest compared to the games. Only the original Dune was any good imo.

Dungeons and Dragons, I missed that generation by a hair, but I still can't see what the fuss was all about and I think the ruleset and this generation and that generation is way too convoluted and it should all just die

Another vote for the Grand Theft Auto series (and while I'm at it Halo). They are terrible games and Rockstar is a blight on the industry!

But they're not all blonde.

**Not really a comment on this thread, so don't take it to heart. This is aimed more at people around me in RL.**

Only thing I really don't "get" in real life as I get older - people who think you have to like what they like and anything outside their self centered viewpoint is [insert generic snob comment here].

Oh, perhaps two other things:

1. Pop culture. Sorry, just don't get most of it. Don't really care for it either.
2. Trash talking. I and most of the people I know came from rather strict backgrounds and if you talked to someone like these xbox kids do, you were throwing down a very real gauntlet. Sure I joke with friends, but it doesn't go beyond witty banter. Yes, I guess I'm a throwback to a much more violent yet polite age.

TRAVEL to different countries. People who set me as their pet project, with the goal being to convince me that my mind is not "expanded enough" unless I go see Italy and Japan.

I've already got two cultures in my head. For me, its enough. Most people seem to see travel as a means to expand their awareness, without taking into account those who already spend much of their time learning to keep theirs from spinning out of control. Not everyone needs the same things from life, but a lot of people gladly take an opportunity to make themselves feel superior by convincing others they do.

Oh and

The reason I don't hang out with other Russian guys is because, while they talk normally in English, to Americans, when it comes to addressing other Russians in their native language they turn into foul-mouthed apes.

I feel it has something to do with primitive instincts and circling your space in proverbial urine.

Jackass. The movies, TV shows and everyone associated with them in any way shape or form.

I think that the jackass folks, along with Tom Green, represent everything that is wrong with today's youth.

Comics, Halo, Eve Online, South Park, empire waist shirts, SUVs, Harry Potter and bubble tea.

Don't get any of them.

You have something wrong here - you shouldn't like Jackass. So you're perfectly in the right.
