Stuff You Know You Should Like But Don't

Yeah, as usual a CBC series supposedly get critical acclaim and no one watches it. Just like almost everything else they make. I love taxpayer funded television. I'm waiting for them to fund Ken Finkleman's next steaming pile.

You like Futurama but don't like...GAH! I'll chime in on Futurama too. I know lots of people who like it and some of them have even shown me episodes they find hilarious in case I wasn't watching the right ones but I just find it to be flat humour.

I'll also add card games. Most of my friends love playing cards and can do so for hours but I get bored with them very fast.

Everything in the world.

Seconded, and expanded to Joss Whedon in general. I don't have any animosity towards the man, I just don't think he's anywhere close to the messianic figure he's made out to be.

Also Anime (Japan does not = Cool), J.J. Abrams and most of Nintendo's flagship franchises. Again, like Mr. Whedon, I don't really hate any of these three things, I just feel that they (especially the former two) are overhyped to a astonishing degree.

Anime Defense: There is anime and manga for everything in Japan. Saying you don't like anime is like saying you don't like movies when really, you simply know which kinds of movies you like and which you are bound to hate and won't even try. Check out the anime thread here, hasn't steered me wrong yet.

See, i'd agree, but i've tried, i've dabbled, but most of the general conventions of it drive me insane. I don't want to see Catgirls, love quadrangles with one constantly well-meaning but inept male lead, etc. There are a few I enjoyed, even loved, but I just lost the desire to try find more by dragging myself through dross.

Blade Runner and Zero Punctuation.

Blade Runner? Seriously?

Huh.

Kat just lost 5 cool points too. I could understand all of Whedon's other stuff, but Firefly is King of Awesome Town.

Moby Dick: I was bored stiff by this book and was rooting for Ahab to get killed.

Other people's photos: I don't mind if the photos are online and I can look at what I want when I want, but actual printed photos with an explanation about a bunch of people I'll never meet, whose names I will never remember...gah.

Princess Bride (the movie): I'm reading the book for the first time and really enjoying it - but when I watch the movie, I secretly root for Buttercup to get eaten by something large and nasty.

Family Guy: I want to smack Peter. I hate that character. Stewie and Brian are alright though.

Vanity Fair: Why is this a classic? I really don't see the appeal of this book unless you're using it as a doorstop; which I did for all of second year university.

There are more, but these are the ones that make me suspect I am a poorly educated cretin.

I join the Blade Runner hate club. It is a mediocre, soulless film carried mostly by its flying vehicles and 3D photographs. And Harrison Ford.

I thought Kat's disdain for Firefly had been pretty much established. She shouldn't get too much grief for it. I can see where Pred's coming from about it, too. I don't agree, but he makes a valid point. It's overhyped.

But it still kicks ass. /opinion

I keep seeing all these people saying Family Guy, and I keep thinking, "sure it sucks, but isn't this thread about things we hate that other people like?" I mean, I thought everyone hated it. I remember that South Park where they just savaged Family Guy. Spot on.

I'll join that club. I just never saw what others saw in it.

My wife found it very dull initially, but having been subjected to it a couple of times, it's now her favorite movie. Call it brainwashing, adapting or "getting it", but I'd urge you to re-visit it at some point in your life.

Yeah, this isn't the first time I've expressed a negative opinion about Firefly (and I catch flak for it every time :)). But I did want to clarify - I don't have disdain for Firefly. I simply don't like it. There's a difference. Disdain implies that I think Firefly is unworthy of notice, or that everyone who does like it is stupid. Whereas I just don't like the show - and it doesn't go beyond that.

That said, Browncoats do make me a little nervous. But then again, so do Superfans of any species. Especially Card Captor Sakura otaku. They're the worst.

Yes disdain not dislike nor hatred is what it's about. Although your disdain may plunge into hatred.

Another one, that this post (not a RickRoll, promise!) reminded me of: the Thief series. Bought 1, played the first mission on about 10 times, got killed each time, and uninstalled. Same thing with 2. To this day, if I'm reading a description of a game and it has the word "stealth" in it, I drive the other way.

I didn't want to be the first to say some of these, so since they have been stated:

WoW
Firefly
Battestar Gallactica
Lost
24
House
Harry Potter
Halo
Bioshock (it's not so much a dislike, more of a don't care for)

Did. Still blew.

I may have to bring my Topanga icons back. ;)

Seconded, on the death of Cute. I have no particular feelings one way or the other on Jolie (SHE'S GOT ENORMOUS LIPS!!![/red v blue voice])

Is it too late to add Keira Knightley to my list? I'd like someone to explain to her that looking like you want to vomit /= sexy.

Also, I despise Heroin Chic. That look pioneered by Fiona Apple that claims that bony women with sunken eyes are teh hawt. Gah!

I'd like to buy each of the women of Hollywood a steak sandwich, but only on the condition that they don't barf it up later.

I love Family Guy as do a great many other people but I can understand why it isn't for everyone. It always gets flak for overusing pop culture references and while that is a big part of their schtick, it's what modern sitcoms do (anyone remember the South Park WoW episode?) I don't know why the South Park guys felt they had to bash it, since Family Guy never took a stab at them and it isn't like Family Guy succeeds where they failed. They certainly haven't failed.

Man, I thought I was going to be the first one to post that. I thought it was okay, but unlike almost everyone else on the board I don't want to have its baby.

Kaylee. Seriously, I don't get it.

Marginally interesting rock bands who are heralded as visionaries (Radiohead, Spoon).

Zucchini/Summer squash.

The Beastie Boys.

The big sunglasses that are trendy for girls to wear.

The human race.

That's fair. I like anime but can't stand catgirls and harem stories usually put me off (make a f*cking decision already). If you ever dabble again I would suggest simply sticking to movies and not series. As a whole, there are several series I've liked, but 80% of the time I don't want to finish them because its like torture and not worth it in the end.

I would like to thank you Kat. At first I was mildly insulted that you wouldn't like a series I love so much. But then I took a step back and wondered just why I would be somewhat insulted by your opinion of Firefly and Pred's opinion of all things Whedon. I think Rabbit's line in Supertroopers describes my epiphany perfectly, "Oh. Looks like I'm the asshole." So feel free to get your hate on for Firefly. I'll love it enough for ten grinches plus two.

Fallout
Baldur's Gate, etc.

And I love RPGs. Just not those ones.
Give me Wizardry or Phantasie(no, not Phantasy Star) or The Bard's Tale any day over Fallout or BG.

Books that Neil Gaiman likes. I LOVE Neil Gaiman. LOVE LOVE LOVE. Sadly, I've never been able to finish a single book that I've bought that has had a positive Neil Gaiman quote on the cover.

With that, let me add, Neil Gaiman. I couldn't get through American Gods (I'll probably try again in the future). I read Stardust in two days, and thought the film was superior.

I'll add another Neil Gaiman and another Terry Pratchet from up-thread. It seems like everyone I know simply worships these two and I've never been able to get more than a few dozen pages into any of their books.

For me also I'll say superhero movies and comics. I've never been interested or entertained by either. I think it's because when you create a character with supernormal ability, you have to give them an opponent who also has supernormal abilities. And the entire plot then becomes a conflict between these two nearly-matched superbeings. If you're going to have a conflict between two people who are matched, why bother to make then super powered in the first place? And if its some sort of power fantasy, why bother with the opponent?

One thing I think I should like, but don't is the combat aspect of the Total War series. With the games I've played from that series (Rome and Medieval), I love all the empire management stuff, including building a huge army, but I just don't have as much fun with the actual battle mechanic. In fact, I usually only play the battles out myself when my army will possibly lose.

I'm with you all the way. I always played 99.9% of Shogun Total War on the Empire map, and usually just let the computer decide my battles.

Marshmallow Fluff
Mario games like Galaxies
Super Mario 64
Zelda games
Florida
wine
the Saw series
Battlestar Galactica (new)

Super Mario 64? Really? Holy god, that game rocked my socks off for months on end.

I'll go against the grain with Metroid Prime, too. I have never ever liked the series, and will repeat my feelings until I die about how Samus should have stayed 2D.

Actually, nobody should like that crap.

As for the rest, you're nuts.

Television. I was trying to figure out how to specify Advertisement Supported Programming, but it's really a moot point. I avoid it as best I can.
Professional, Amateur, or for that matter organized Sporting events. I can watch them... but I just don't care.
Large Social Events. Crowds make me uncomfortable, but I'm getting better. It's still not something I would choose to do without a darn good reason for being there.
Radio. I was trying to figure out how to specify Advertisement Supported Programming, but it's really a moot point. I avoid it as best I can.

Not sure if I SHOULD like them, but apparently lots of people do. Weirdos.

Yahtzee. No not the game, the dude. I don't know why, but I feel like the world has had enough Grumpy Gamer (c) reviews.

EDIT: Rezzy's new avatar might be the best one ever. As in, turn them off now, it's over.
