THIEF 4!

Eurogamer article

There were some stumbles in 3 (as well as 1 and 2 for that matter) but I still loved it. I'm just glad this series is back regardless of the potential for later disappointment.

I think I'm about to have a heart attack. This better not be a late April Fool's joke. If this turns out to be false, I will hunt you down!!

Yes.
Very Yes.

*Does the Happy Dance!*

Day. freakin'. ONE.

OK, let's start taking bets that Garrett is going to be replaced with grizzled old Medieval Sam Fisher or a busty vixen in very tight leather.

*swoon*

I rather enjoyed the last one. I'll admit it wasn't quite up to the standards of what came before it, but it had one of my favorite setpiece/levels of all time in any game.

"The Shalebridge Cradle" rocked.

I'll begin at "cautiously optimistic" on this one.

I have never been more scared in a game than on that level. Doom, F.E.A.R or any other game is no match for the emotions I felt during that unholiest of all levels.

Optimistically cautious.

Shalebridge Cradle should be required playing for anyone attempting to create a scary game.

Thief is a stealth-action title set in a gritty world that's a cross between the late middle ages and Victorian eras. It sees players creeping around and killing people by using their environment to cloak their approach and dump bodies down sewer hatches.

Wow, Eurogamer, way to make Thief sound like the biggest piece of crap in the world. Yep, that's Thief for you, a gritty, creepy, sewer dumping murder fest.

Between this and Deus Ex 3, Eidos has the chance to either become my new favorite game company for life or the worst kind of cash-grabbing scum imaginable, depending on how well they do.

I wouldn't be surprised if they relaunch with a different character. The ending of the 3 made it look like Garrett's time as the main character was done.

Yeah wasn't there a woman who seemed poised to take his place? I can't quite remember the ending.

I may go back and replay Thief 3.

Really enjoyed Thief, wasn't so keen on Thief 2 and loved Deadly Shadows so am looking forward to Thief 4

I still have the burned copies McChuck made for me years ago. Got through the first but never go to the second and third. My pinky still hurts from all that SHIFT button action. I don't think I left the crouched position the entire game. I also had an addiction to blackjacking everybody, regardless of need.

A little bit more info on Thief 4, though this was posted about 7 months ago. Another Eurogamer Article

I really should play this game... I have always wanted to but just never had the time for it... Now if I could only find all three of them somewhere...

I'm definitely looking at picking up deadly shadows(only played the original thief) this summer during pile killing season.
*edit*
I just saw this on the system requirements page on steam

Thief: Deadly Shadows does not support play on laptop computers.

I hope thats some oldschool bs.

'eh, really I feel the original games were more about the developers than the name alone, I'm not really all that interested until the game shows some merit on its own. I'm also interested if this new game will this game remember the PC roots of the series, though I'm not all that optimistic on that point.

I played Thief: Deadly Shadows on my laptop through my Gametap account and it worked just fine.

Well, this is a new unproven studio now working on two classic franchises, so I'll remain skeptical for the time being, especially since Eidos has been acting like a company more interested in "leveraging brands" than putting out polished, well-made games lately.

That said, with Assassin's Creed being a huge hit, maybe this is the best time for a franchise with a similar atmosphere to have another chance at being in the spotlight.

Please don't be a crappy console port like the last one...

One of my favourite all-time franchises from 1-3. I still have 2 installed on my XP machine next to System Shock 2 for when I need some brains with my shooters.

Yay!

Thief 1 and 2 were great. I still didn't play Thief 3, but I'll probably pick it up for a few bucks.
I hope they don't screw up that sequel.

Wow, this certainly came out of nowhere. I thought Thief 3 tied things up pretty nicely, but I am a Thief fiend so I welcome the possibility of Thief 4. Except that it's not by LGS, which makes me very, very worried.

Now where's Alien Love Gardener?

EDIT: From the article Tkyl linked:

"People want another Thief, too. We'll make that series more modern, though," he said, adding, "the medieval thing's run its course."

Um, yea. He certainly doesn't get it. Taffer!

Haha, I'm right here. I've just been trying to figure out how I feel about this. It's not by Lokking Glass or ex-Looking Glass people, so that's automatically a problem. Still, more people giving that genre a go can only be a good thing. If only it weren't with one of the besterest gaming series ever...

I'd really like to see them not try to build directly on the previous games. Give Garrett a rest. Not only because I don't want their filthy paws mucking him up, but his story is done. There's not many places to take his character after the events of Deadly Shadows, so just don'ty try. And while you're at it, set it a good couple of years into the future. Give the old city a while to grow into a slightly unfamiliar place, if you're going to set it there at all. As long as Eidos Montreal doesn't mess too much with the original stuff, keep the gameplay fundamental the same and create a strong, morally ambiguous character and give the story a strong noir/horror flavour I'll be pretty happy.

I'm pretty sure that's a holdover from when no laptop ever had a graphics card with the required pixel shaders. Only other thing I can think of would be that it can run a funky speeds if you have power-management turned on.

Cool. I ask because I was thinking of getting it on steam. I'll probably play it on my beast, but my brother may want to try it on his laptop.
And quick question, I liked Assassin's creed and Thief(2? it was a long time ago), I guess I'm going to like deadly shadows right?

My thoughts for the setting was similar to the difference between Fable and Fable 2. Move things forward a bit but nowhere near the present.

I think as long as they don't mess with the formula too much that a new company can emulate the original games. I know it's not Looking Glass but I think they were necessary to innovate and create the game in the first place. I'm less worried about the need for innovation in the fourth iteration of a series. Mainly, I want more Thief but updated. Not something drastically different. But I'm easy. I'll take what I can get.

One thing they could do for the new one is go back to singular levels. I hissed the first time I ran into one of those purple clouds that takes you to the other half of a level. At least you could go back and forth, unlike the first two Splinter Cells. I didn't like how those games divided a level into parts. It took away all freedom.

Things I liked in Thief 3 were the new lockpicking system, pressing oneself agains the wall (some very tense moments using that move) and the city between levels. I hated the loads going from burrough to burrough but liked the openness of it. I wouldn't mind more of that without getting into Burnout: Paradise territory where all you have to drive to the races. I say teleport to the levels but lemme make some cash on the side by exploring and robbing a living, less scripted city.

Also, bring back the rope and vine arrows. Though, not necessarily at the expense of the climbing claws. I don't know why it has to be one or the other.

So what are they going to do with it? Reboot the franchise? Or a prequel? Or a futuristic thing with matrix style people?

I think a weird pseudo Victorian-ish future would be cool, with steam engines everywhere and crude cars honking on the streets. Kind of like world in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
