Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2

Good finds, J. Those are sexy screens.

I mean, if you find drop-pods and jump packs sexy.

Which I do.

The shots look nice and the trailer was cool but my hesitation remains.

The official site is up and has the teaser and shots as well.

Day one buy!

Shouldn't this be "Noon of War"?

lols, QS!

I loved the first Dawn of War, probably my favorite RTS after Starcraft, so I'll be getting this provided the reviews don't tank (and neither does my computer).

My biggest complaint about the first game was the excessive micromanagement. I don't want to level up individual units in a fast action game with hundreds of units. The sequel gets points for capping the unit count and moving some of the upgrading to between matches. That second part reminds me of X-Com, ultra-sexy.

IGN has a preview up

I am quite intrigued by the direction they are taking this in. Persistent squads, non-linear campaign, loot drops, acid-edged chainswords.....Relic has not let me down yet, so I look forward to seeing all this in action.

There is a teaser gameplay trailer with the preview. Holy cow the game looks gorgeous.

Ooh! Good find, J.

We're certainly excited by this notion, since it's hard to establish any significant emotional attachment to a tiny RTS unit when, for a small resource fee, you can just create another. "We always felt it kind of broke the illusion that you're training units on the ground," said Ebbert. "The thought of little factories cranking out Space Marines on the ground just didn't jibe with how we interpreted the game."

I couldn't agree more. This sounds like the way I read/play/understand the 40k universe and that's what has gotten me excited about DoW again. I mean, it was great playing the original in the universe, but it didn't feel as though you were part of it in any way, just because it didn't 'fit.'

Given the way Marines seem to pick up trophies and Orkz tend to cannibalize the tech of other races, loot sounds great. I hope they are unique, or at least race-specific, items to add that little touch.

I'm very glad that Relic has decided to break the mold, while Starcraft II will only give its fanatics more of the same. I know who will be getting my money. Really looking forward to it.

I am ashamed to admit that I never got into Warhammer. It was the painting those damn pewter guys that kept me a way.

This game knowing very little about the IP, looks like a must buy for me.

That should say something.

Maybe not I buy everything anyway.

So here's my one concern.

As of Soulstorm we have Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, Chaos, Imperial Guard, Necron, Tau, Sisters of Battle, and Dark Eldar.

Will they keep all 9 armies available or are they going to take a HUGE step backwards in terms of content. Sure, I understand all that was introduced over the course of one game and three expansions, but Dark Crusade and Soulstorm seem more like complete games than "expansions" to me.

Odds are you're going to loose some armies, they need to have room to expand. The leap forward will be in complexity - I bet the armies will have much more depth and uniqueness than before (it better!) Also, this one being SMs vs Nids is no surprise. SMs are the golden boys and Nids couldn't be done with the previous engine. Ever since the first expansion the devs said the Nids would be in DOW2 only.

**Edit
Over 3k in Chaos... KILL MAIM BURN!

O.M.G.... Thanks for the find Dr_J!!! Actually, no I "hate" you! Now I can't stop thinking about the game, I want it now!!!!

Some screens that are easier to see b/c they are brighter.

GFW should have a podcast up today, discussing DOW2. I am psyched.

I need to change my pants.

GFW just released a DoW2 specific podcast

Thanks for the heads up. Downloading the podcast now.

(knock knock) Is this thing on?

It doesn't have a lot of new information, but still a good read.

Cheeky...

Cheeky indeed. They've been saying for ages that we'll see the 'Nids in Dawn of War 2. It's time to put up or shut up on this one, Relic.

All in all, this is totally DO WANT NOW material.

edit - Also, your link is broken Sonicator.

It looks like company of heroes with DoW 40k characters. AWESOME!

So I take it Company of Heroes is good?

Company of heroes was the best thing that happened to RTS since Starcraft. If you haven't played it, play it. The WWII setting fits very well.

CoH is my current addiction, I wish I had picked it up when it first came out. GoGamer.com has it on sale right now fro $25 for the gold edition ($40 on Steam). I'll pick up Dawn of War 2 just based on how much fun I am having with CoH.

Edit: I think I've fixed the link, if not: http://au.pc.gamespy.com/pc/warhamme...

I have been waiting for this since CoH came out and I said to myself I cant wait for Company of Warhammer.

Looks pretty cool. The loot stuff sounds particularly interesting but my cynicism tells me it'll be closer to Warcraft III loot than Diablo II loot.

I'm also still not a fan of how the Space Marines look. Like the Starcraft ones better.

And there you have it, I've mentioned all of Blizzard's franchises so this post is over.

Wargear Mechanics Preview on IGN

Sounds very intriguing. The one comment that hit home to me was how they were avoiding the whole "starting over every mission" method of play; something that has bugged me in RTS's for years.

I really like the direction DoW 2 is heading in.

As long as it doesn't fall into the Homeworld trap. I never liked having to mine the entire map after finishing the mission, just so I'd have a decent enough fleet for the next scenario.

Die, now. :p

Anyone have rumors on a release date for this? Colour me excited.

Dunno if they're using the same mechanics as in DoW but there was never any resource gathering in that. Each side had their own way of increasing population cap and other than that you got your money by controlling and holding points. No little peons running back and forth.
