Conference Call

The GWJ Conference Call Episode Six!

Episode Six - October 11, 2006

Dwarf Fortress, NHL2K7, more DS lovin', indy games and TV!

IMAGE(http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/files/images/gwjcc.gif)

While Certis is braving the fetid wilds of India, seeking greater enlightenment and a store that sells Pepto Bismol, Elysium was forced to take the reigns of this week's show, with Rabbit filling in the gaps. We talk about the tastes-great less-filling world of indy games, and CC producer Gaald finally gets his moment to talk about what's really important: all that TV he's watching which is keeping him from the games he can now play on his miraculously present Xbox 360.

We also feature another audio email from longtime lurker Pete

To contact us, email [email protected]! Send us your thoughts on the show, pressing issues you want to talk about or whatever else is on your mind. You can even send a 30 second audio question or comment (MP3 format please) if you're so inclined.

I think we've found a new theme song!

Burned an ready to enjoy on my drive. Last two CC's in fact. Should cover most of my I-5 time.

Awesome GWJ song from pete!

I for one enjoyed the new tv season segment. I'm excited about all the new shows this season. I'm watching most that were mentioned, but I've never heard of Weeds. I'll have to look that one up. I guess I should check out this thread of the week mentioned too.

Good job guys.

wait, is this the new gwj radio!? How did I miss this!?

Good show as always... one thing though, music seems to always play louder then the spoken words. Is that the way it should be or do I need to play with my EQ settings? Other than that... all is good.

No the music does tend to be louder than the show. I am working on making our voices louder.

Great! It would be nice if I didn't have to crank my volume to maximum on the bus & metro just to overpower the ambient sound. =)

Great show, guys. I've got another 20 minutes that I will cover on the way home, but I really like the new music, and good coverage as always.
Though I'm disappointed that you chose to record during BSG. I mean, come on, guys. Surely there's another two hour block somewhere over the weekend.

Yeah, I'm the bad guy there, I had all sorts of scheduling issues around getting this one done. My bad. Kill me tonight for it.

Make way for the bad guy. There's a bad guy comin' through! Better get outta his way!

I actually didn't even realize we had scheduled the recording during the season premiere of BSG I don't watch TV live anymore, unless it's Football.

Nice one. Im happy to see some Dwarf Fortress love. You guys even had the token 'can't get past the ASCII' naysayer. That's right Elysium. You're token.

Funny thing is, Dwarven Fortress is not technically an ASCII game. It actually has a bitmap template that it uses for all its text and graphics. The designers just decided to use standard ASCII characters in it. Many of us have replaced that bitmap with ones that give a less abstract appearance to the game.

Did you hear him!? Token.

Seriously. Its great to spread the DF gospel. And you guys were absolutely right. With a fringe game like DF, I've passed it off to lots of my friends and now we trade stories and strategies.

Well, just because this seems to be my day to be a dick: it actually uses curses, which is a library for pushing ascii characters around on a screen (like a terminal window). In this case, how the characters are rendered is based on the bmp file they stick in their art directory, but programatically when you ask for a table, they give you an ASCII(134), not a bitmap.

See, I told you it was my day to be a dick.

How did it feel?

Dhaelis, your music is awesome.

That tune from Pete was awesome! Kudos to the kiwi!

Thanks, that's really kind of you!

I was just introduced to your Podcast yesterday by a friend of mine who spoke highly of the Podcasts. So far I have just listened to Episode Six. I know it's not the most recent, but my eye caught the topic of Dwarf Fortress, that I have not heard discussed on other podcasts I listen to.

Down to business though, I appreciate well produced podcasts and also good music used in podcasts.

One bit that struck me was at time mark - 2:17 there is a song that is used as a transition between topics. Can anyone direct towards song title and artist so I might be able to find it?

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for checking us out, I know there's a lot of podcasts out there vying for ear time these days.

The track for that transition was "One Big Holiday" by My Morning Jacket - The Wired CD

It's free music, you can actually download it here.

Damn my penchant for previewing posts!
