GWJ Conference Call Episode Seven

Episode Seven - October 24, 2006

Retro Gaming, Gametap, GenCon, In Game Advertising, and Gamer Dad

IMAGE(http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/files/images/gwjcc.gif)

Another show without The Certis, and another week of Elysium in the big chair. What could go wrong? Lovingly known as The Rabbit Episode, we've brought back Julian Murdoch and peppered our show notes with things he cares about like retro gaming, Gencon, and intellectual property. Next week maybe we can talk about his favorite colors and what he had for breakfast!

[Editor Note: We discuss issues that took place between GamerDad and a Microsoft blog initially of the same name in this show. The issue has since been resolved, and we applaud Microsoft for doing the right thing, and their speed in recognizing the trademark of an existing community. As we suspected when recording the episode, the matter was resolved by a company that is making great strides in recongizing blog communities. Additionally, all links should now be working properly]

To contact us, email [email protected]! Send us your thoughts on the show, pressing issues you want to talk about or whatever else is on your mind. You can even send a 30 second audio question or comment (MP3 format please) if you're so inclined.

And, yes, this is a day early. Think of it as a special gift for no particular reasons.

No reason? No Reason! It's because we love you! And don't let Elysium tell you different!

Thanks and btw could you update the rss feed so I can easily sync it from winamp?

Nice show guys. And just to make the gametap section sound even more like an ad, $60 (US) for 1 year is a limited time offer that expires Oct 31st, then it's back to $10 per month ($120 per year). Its a great promotion, reminds me of NFL 2k5 which was the best NFL game ever made, and sold for a measly $20. If I remember correctly, dropping the price by a little over half netted them something like 10x as many sales as the last year. Im sure they liked that kind of math. I imagine Gametap is seeing a huge boost in their subscriber numbers, which can only mean more clout to go get more great games.

When I was looking into the service I discovered Gametap is owned by Turner broadcasting which owns, among other things, CNN, the Atlanta Braves, and Cartoon Network. That brings me to one of the other cool things about Gametap which a lot of people overlook (understandably). The Gametap TV section has some pretty cool stuff. 15ish episodes of Space Ghost, 4 of Sea Lab 2021, including the Happycake oven episode which is my personal favorite. There's also a 'cartoon network' link which appears to be some sort of streaming content of selected cartoon network shows like Tom & Jerry and a bunch of cartoons I've never heard of. I keep trying to see if they might have any adult swim stuff in the stream but it would seem they keep that one kid-friendly. There's a decent amount of stuff there, good to watch while Torment is downloading. I think they add 1 episode a week of Sea Lab, probably the others too, so it grows pretty quickly.

Im officially an ad whore.

Oh yeah, and Crossed Swords is a cool Neo Geo game I had never heard of. Its like an almost first person sword fighting game that's very tough. Im sure its adapted from an arcade game designed to just steal your quarters, especially the red fire breathing worm bastards, but its a lot of fun.

This is out of control!!!! It's like Christmas early!!! Good thing certis is gone or he would have made us wait till tomorrow....

So... Certis is back for the next episode.. I hope he isn't too displeased, Colonel Tigh.

Great show, guys.

No Certis will not be back for the next episode. We have 1 more wacky show without him.

Blue

Yogurt and Granola

Odd... my iTunes is not downloading the podcast. Arh.

This is great =)

BTW, I notice you guys don't call it a podcast anymore. Is this because of Apple's lame "pod" lawsuits? Are you going to call it a Netcast now? Or just "The Show".

My iTunes isn't downloading it either. Even if I go to the iTunes store page for the podcast, the last ep that appears is the one from Oct 11. BTW, the home page article claims this one is also from Oct 11 and is episode 6.

This podcast is useless with pics!

There is a decent chance that I'm doing something wrong in posting it and iTunes is getting confused.

Something "Bad" about Gametap (and their own advertisement seems to acknowlege this!):
Banners on their site claim: Over 500 Great Video Games!
At current count their system offers 710 titles which means: And 210 Crappy Video Games!

Gametap: A whole lotta Chaff to dig through! We stock Dregs! Literally... the bottom of the barrel.

BUT it's a great service and I'm having a lot of fun with it. Sooo...

Great show like always guys. I found another "Bad" thing about gametap. Not all of the content is available in Canada, too bad for all you canadians (this includes Planescape: Torment).

Over 500 could mean as many as 710.

Its nice to hear some ppl having fun with the NDS.

Ive played Trauma Center, Clubhouse, Super Mario, Advance Wars, and I need to recommend Meteos to all the NDS gamers out there, for me is still number one game, and you are never going to see in another console as the stylus is mandatory.

Great show as always

Utili-kilt = big fat guy in a skirt. I do know a couple guys who can pull it off, but they're very much in the minority.

You guys need to go to PAX (and if you did you need to come talk to me). I'd love to hear your comments about the Cloud Strife knock-off with a seven-foot fake Buster Sword. Next year I'm going as Chilla the Gorilla from Kameo.

"Sorry, GameTap is only available in the United States."

Great...

I try to download the podcast through iTunes on Windows and Mac... still no luck.

Also, to note... Microsoft change their blog from GamerDad to Xbox Dad.

It seems there was a problem with the way the show was posted, we are working on getting it fixed so that it all works.

As for the Gamerdad story, we recorded the show on Friday night, and when recording we decided it was worth talking about even though we knew there was a possibility this was all going to be resolved before it was posted. In fact I think we mention it during the segment. So yes we know the site was changed to Xbox dad, but we can't change the show now.

EDIT: Yay! Thanks to Rabbit who found the problem and Brennil who managed to get the fix in, the links should now work.

And, I believe, I owe Gaald $5 bucks, because during and after the show he was all over this saying "C'mon, MSFT is the Sh*t right now, they will SO make this right before we air."

I was the doubter, and I bow to MSFT's greater glory.

Andrew got a voicemail apology from John Porcaro (the guy over on Gamerscoreblog) today. I'm glad to see it, and I'll be pimping this guy's articles as hard as I was pimping the fact he was a pinhead. We can use all the help we can get on this frickin' windmill. I ran into another little trog last night on Live that just crystalized the whole thing for me again.

That actually made me laugh out loud. This whole thing is like a Comedy of Errors! You are correct of course and we will fix that soon I am sure. The good thing is everything seems to be working the way it should be. Sigh.

I don't know what you people are talking about! It says those dates right up there. You must be seeing things!
