Abyss Odyssey

July 14 - July 20

Section:

Once again the big man himself, Sean "The Splugorth" Sands, vacates the offices just in time to leave a rather quiet, uneventful week in the lap of some poor shmuck with too much time on their hands. (In other words: me.)

There's not a lot to work with this week, especially having to dig into some of the less-than-stellar sources of information that are not always accurate. If the Internet is to be believed, Saint's Row IV: National Treasure Edition either comes out this week, was already released last week, or simply does not exist.

You know what does exist? Abyss Odyssey, my pick for Game of the Week. For some, the title will be noteworthy as being developed by the same folks that brought you Rock of Ages and Zeno Clash, but for me it's the fact that the game is being published by Atlus. That typically means that the game is set apart from its competitors by doing something quirky, different, interesting, or any combination of those three.

If you like the idea of plunging into the depths of the Earth as a warlock's nightmares become reality, where the enemies you encounter have in-depth move sets and the game's state changes based on how well the community has fought against the mask of the warlock, then Abyss Odyssey is probably a game worth your attention. Personally, they had me with a character named "Ghost Monk."

As for last week, if you're wondering what you might have missed while we traveled back through time twenty years, it turns out the final episode of The Wolf Among Us came out. Otherwise, you just missed out on some other platform rereleases for Another World and One Piece: Unlimited World Red. So a typically slow July.

I keep forgetting about Abyss Odyssey. Those dudes make interesting games. Always worth a look.

THANK YOU FOR NOT PUTTING MAGIC AS THE GOTW.

Yeah, that sounds worth the attention of all us weirdos who like weird games.

Abyss Odyssey would be an instant buy if it was on Vita. It looks like the perfect Vita game.

This Abyss Odyssey sounds interesting indeed. I shall purchase and investigate.

You say that, but you clearly forgot about Atlus' foray into the world of licensed games with Rest in Peace Department and the Game of Thrones RPG.

La la la la I can't hear you I have my fingers in my... eyes.

Man this stuff doesn't work so well online

Abyss Odyssey wuz robb....oh...

...reflex action, never mind. Carry on!

I might pick up Magic on my Android... really enjoyed Magic 2014 on it.

Abyss Odyssey is really tempting, but I'm with walterqchocobo. I'd rather play it on Vita. However Dragon Crown started as console only and then went to Vita, so I have high hopes.

I haven't followed Abyss Odyssey, but given it's from ACE team I'll definitely read the reviews to find out more about whatever craziness they've concocted down in Chile this time.

Other than that, nothing for me this week. Just fired up Quest for Infamy last night so I have a fair bit of pointing and clicking ahead of me

Yay, pandering?

Those were just anomalies.

Well, now I know what a Splugorth is.

Australia seems to do OK in Rifts, too.

Another World was one of my all time fave Amiga games !

Found one!

Wayward Manor got robbed!

I totally forgot that Wayward Manor is Neil Gaiman's game. Could be interesting, could be terrible.

Well crud, one more for the wish list.

So I bought Abyss Odyssey mostly because of the feature mentioned in a couple of reviews about how the game itself will evolve depending on the collective performance and input of all the players over time. This just sounds awesome to me.

Played it last night for the first time and I dig the controls. Dunno about the complaints there (not sluggish at all), but I did find that there is a noticeable delay when shopping at a merchant's. Hopefully, this stuff will get patched soon.

Might try and make it to the Warlock over the weekend.

Really digging it.
