New ALIENS game gets subtitle

Maybe we could build a fire and sing couple of songs, huh? Why don't we try that?

When they're done right, they aren't all that bad.

Example?

What? You ignored my example. Not good enough for you huh?

Just hand me your ammo before you head on in, we wouldnt want to cause a chain reaction and meltdown.

Mrs. Weasley?

I saw Alien when they re-released it to theaters around Halloween a few years ago. Man that was spectacularly awesome. I almost peed myself.

That's because I blew it out of the god-damned airlock!

With those screenshots, I'll pipe-dream here and say that I hope for some really solid 4-player (or 2-player at worst) co-op action, specialized kits for marines to choose from (can't shoot and watch motion sensor simultaneously, like in Aliens, so have one guy work that as needed for example), and control more like Gears, less like Halo 3 (more tactical, less bunny-hopping-ADHD-and-shoot craziness).

If ever there was an appropriate time for button mashing, that would be it. If there was an alien parasite trying to attach itself to your face you'd be doing everything in your power to pry it off, not trying to play some pansy-ass Simon Says crap.

I dunno, it's just one of the first good pictures I found.

For the kids. The adjustable stock pieces means it grows with them! Inavaluble if your a colonist on a planet with no Sunlight yet it's not -200 degress...

Example?

Indigo Prophesy (aka Fahrenheit to all the Europeans) , God of War and Resident Evil 4 come to mind as having better than usual QTEs.

There's a lot of games (I'm looking at you Marvel Ultimate Alliance & Mass Effect) where they take QTEs way, way over the top but in the right situations they work well to ratchet up the tension in a game. Indigo Prophesy's core gameplay is based entirely around QTEs and other than the crazy finale and ridiculous stealth missions, the game is a solid piece of entertainmant.

Yeah, but IMO they still were totally unnecessary and sucked, especially in GoW. The only good use of RTEs in Indigo Prophecy was when you had a limited amount of time to pick your responses.

What about CoD4 when you get jumped by a dog? Sounds a lot like getting attacked by a facehugger.

I wouldn't call that a quick-time event. I'd call that using your melee attack at the right time.

A preview article with screenies

4 PLAYER COOP (It just can't be said enough)! SUH-WEET!

Call it what you like, but I have to agree, when put in perspective it's a QTE.

It was intuitive. I knew what to press because it made goddamn sense. Therefore, not a QTE. If snapping the dog's neck by pressing the melee button at the right time is a QTE, then sniping is one too because you've got to pull the trigger at the right time.

So by your logic, if it doesn't suck, it can't be a QTE. QTEs must suck.

I think it's a brilliant example of the right way to do a QTE. As a matter of fact, it's such a good QTE that some people don't believe it's even a QTE! Brilliant! Now we know how to measure a QTE. If I notice while I'm doing it that it's a QTE, you, Mr. Developer, have failed.

FYI - I don't recall instructions popping up on-screen when I had to snipe someone

Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but something like that happened when you had to snipe the Russian in the flashback level, right?

Edit: And, just to get this thread back on track...

*pulse rifle firing*

Come on! Come on! Come and get it, baby! Come on! Let's go, yeah, come on! Come on! Come and get it you bastards! Come on, you too! Oh, you want some of this? f*ck you!

I don't recall any instructions coming up to kill the dog either.

They popped up if it ripped your throat out. So I guess it's a "hidden" QTE then. Are we defining QTE's as only when a flashing button appears on your screen? Because if not, intuitive or not, it's still a QTE. A good QTE, but a QTE.

Yeah, QTEs have buttons that flash on screen to tell you what to do because there's absolutely no goddamn way you'd intuit or guess that that's what you were supposed to do.

R1+R2 to dodge a boulder? WTF?

It happened to me the first time I got jumped by one (and before it ate my throat). I was so bad on the timing I just resolved to shoot them the first chance I had in the future. Probably more humane than going all Michael Vick on them.

If this game hits the PC, they should structure the facehugger QTE like this: when a facehugger jumps on you, ten randomly selected keys on the standard 104-key keyboard go live. To get the facehugger off, you have to hit all ten of those keys within a three-second interval. If you take longer than three seconds, the keys all reset and you have to hit them again. But you only have eight seconds before the facehugger slips its tube down your tube, so you'd better hurry! I think the spastic, panicked mashing of keys would capture some of what it would be like to have a bundle of slippery, iron-strong legs scurrying up your chest while you try to get a grip on them.

Also, Aliens quote-fests feel incomplete without Sanjuro. Sort of like my soul. Assholes and elbows, *sniff*.

I really hope that the lowest level weapon is "harsh language."

You're out of bullets, out of napalm for the flame thrower, out of grenades, or you're under the nuclear reactor's cooling system and can't use high-energy weapons. You default to the lowest level weapon, and every time you click you utter a new profanity.

That would be awesome.

Back on the subject of subtitles, I was kind of hoping the title would be "Aliens: The official game of the last good Alien movie."

Or maybe "Aliens: We're really sorry about 3 and 4, okay?"

Huh. Interesting. But if you believe that luck is a quantifiable energy that can be expended, I think I'd rather spend mine on winning the lottery, which is probably a little more likely than getting those keys right.

No doubt. Maybe we should have another "Where the hell did that guy go?" threads. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like he can be conjured, Derek Smart style.

Today's PvP seems relevant to this topic:

One of the funniest sections of Aliens is one I never noticed the first time around. The team is in the APC, just after using the shotgun on the alien trying to get inside the vehicle. Vasquez is freaking out because she wants to get back out to rescue her buddy, but Hudson (or was it Hicks? you'd think I'd remember since I watched this last night) is screaming in her face that 'he's gone, he's gone!'

Well, Vasquez slumps and slides down a little bit. I suppose it's meant to look like she's overcome by despair or some such, but it looks more like Hudson's breath sent her into a state of near-catatonia for a moment.

Based on the picture I'd say it's not even a barrel but a tubular magazine for the extra shells you're loading into the chamber when you pump the shotgun.

No, he's referring to the barrel. It appears to have an interchangeable choke in it. Combat shotguns typically don't have them. They're mainly used in hunting, for changing how tight your shotgun patterns.

I like the subtitle, it focuses on that aspect of the game and franchise that I probably have always enjoyed the most. I'd love the opportunity to be a colonial marine alongside some goodjers on a bug hunt. Between this and the co-op potential of Left4Dead, I may be in co-op heaven this year.

Besides, "Colonial Marines" is a much better option than a lot of other marketing concepts that were rejected during pre-production...

Aliens: Facehugger Exxxtreme
Aliens: Adventures in Xenomorph Tonsil Hockey
Aliens: Making you da Queen's Female Doggo
Aliens: Male Marine Mortality
Aliens: Wet T-shirts of Blood
Aliens: Pimp my APC
Aliens: Chests burstin with Galactic Love
Aliens: No Predator to save your ass this time

All of which would make terrific band names or forum tags.

Stop your grinnin' and drop your linen! A quick gameplay clip showed up in the latest Jace Hall show, extracted for your pleasure by Shacknews. Not much, but it looks not too dissimilar to the AvP games. Looks like the only way you can use the motion tracker is with the pistol.
