Grumpicus, you mentioned that you or bagga might try to do a simple draft app. Where do we stand on that?

It doesn't appear to have gone anywhere... which means I'll take care of it. It won't be fancy real-time, AJAX

Maybe it could use the database of the sortable list of players sportsgamer.com has.

If you know of someway to download it from there, or anywhere else, I'm all ears.

No, I am a luddite in manners of programming and database management. I'd be featured in one of those Dilberts as a clueless boss giving directives that make no sense.

Here's the thing: I'd  to write it, with fancy real-time AJAX. I just haven't answered because I don't know how much time I have these days.

Damn you, bagga! Get your priorities straight!

Oh, and when do you want to play?

I'm back and ready to play. A draft league sounds great, I also think a snake draft if the only way to do it. I also think because it's a new Idea, you should put all the players new and old into a hat and decide the order make a fresh new start for everone. Let's just have fun.

You think we can get the data from that website somehow? I can throw together a quicky Ruby On Rails draft app if we can.

I manually copy/pasted/scrubbed the data from the website. I've got it in XLS and tab-delimited format. I've also just now published it on Google Docs.

Edit: I also just made an XML version.

Wow. You're the man. Give me a few days, then, guys. Let me see what I can do with this. Unless someone else already has something cooking.

I am new to the site but would like to join the league if there is a spot open. It is fair to say that I am horrific at the game, but I enjoy a good challenge.

Be good to have you, Ertic. If you've been around the site a bit, you'll see we're interested in fair play and fun...generally light on the cheesy side. (Yes, I'm looking at whoever three three flea flickers against me in one half - even if only one of them connected...whoever that was.)

And, about skill level -- well, I suck, too. So you'll have some company!

Spent a few hours with the draft site today. Imported the data Grumpicus provided into MySQL and created a Ruby on Rails app to show all the players along with the images associated with a skill. The table sorts also.

Now from here I could do one of two things. We could do the draft order, I could populate a second table and we could simply have this be for display purposes only and I could run the draft, updating the data for you all to refresh and see who is left on the board, who's on the clock, etc. That could be done in a day, roughly.

Route 2 would be to actually make this thing give you the ability to make your picks. Might take longer and Season 3 might not get off the ground. Also, if we do the shorter of the two options I could put in some quick sorting here to allow people to sort by position, skill, etc.

Thoughts?

Well I believe option one is the safer bet from what you yourself are saying. If you are willing to run the draft, and deal with the potential headaches, then by all means lets get the show on the road.

Of course we also could just run a couple of spreadsheets on Google Docs and have those be our running lists of who's available/taken and who's up next in the draft. Do we imagine this thing going days or being done while we're all on IM (draft day trades, anyone?) or asynchronously?

keep it simple. async.

In the interest of keeping it simple we could run it with the spreadsheets then, right? Give everyone access to them, take turns, make your picks, mark people off the sheet, etc. No? I trust you guys and frankly am under the weather and not sure I want to spend much more time programming an app. We'll see how I later.

A spreadsheet sounds like a fine idea. A person makes a pick, writes the name of their pick in their column and then erases the player or puts a check mark next to the taken player. We'd just need to have some number to advance, to show that each player has made their draft pick. A check next to each person's name for each round?

So who all is playing in the league this season? Once we get that straight I'll put together a spreedsheet on like Google Docs. I'll either give everyone the ability to edit it or else I'll take the pics in and make the changes. We'll have two sheets. One for draft order, rounds, etc. and who each owner drafted and the other for players, their skills and whether they're still available.

I'd love to roll my own sweet application, but I have a temp of 100 right now. If we want to get this thing going, we're going to have to just roll with whatever tools we can use to get up and running quickly.

I'm in!

I think doing the draft through Google docs is good. I also think we should set up a thread for people to post their picks, as it will make it easier to follow who's turn it is, and when they need to pick.

I am hoping to get in if you folks have room

I'm in.

I'm in all we need to do is set up a draft, is make list of all players in the game. Then pick a day meet up on X-Box messenger to do the draft. This way each person can see the players and make there team as we draft. When a player is drafted you just scratch that person from the list. Then if you see somone has been drafted a second time tell the person. When the draft is over each person should be responsible, for putting there team roster on the sight this will also help in the case of somone getting picked a second time. Remember it's only 11 players per team so it should go fast. Welcome to the league and site ertic look foward to playing you one day.

If we could get 10 (or however many we end up with) all together and do the draft, that would be great. But I really doubt we will be able to schedule it that easily. I think if we do it via the thread, we can get the draft done in a couple of days.

Personally, I have a pretty open schedule right now, so I will do whatever we need to get the draft done.

Me! In!

I'm in.

It'd be hard to identify a time to sit and wait through a draft given family and work commitments.

I think the asynchronous draft is better. I'll setup a couple spreadsheets. I'll post them to Google docs. I'll figure out how to give you guys write privileges to each document (hopefully everyone doesn't have to have a Google account) and then we can run a thread where we announce our pick and then announce who's next. As long as people follow that thread closely it should go quickly.

I'm going to open a new thread for getting a roll call on who's in. Once we have who's in I'll put together the draft order and announce that.

Is everyone in that wants in?

Can I be closed? The owners' meeting has ended and I don't want too many APF2k8 threads hanging around.
