Is even $49.99 a deal when the supported format's dead? That's like going out and buying an 8-track deck just because they're cheap even though everything's coming out on tape/CD... just sayin.
There might be a few people who'd pick up the drive for $50 and go on a rampage at one of the HD-DVD movie blowout sales?
I wonder how much inventory Microsoft and retailers have left to move? It'd be amusing if they had a warehouse with 500,000 units that are now virtually worthless.

Well, if you haven't bought the catalog yet and plan to, it could be fairly cost effective for every retailer is going to be slashing prices on their hd-dvd inventory. $50 plus four $15 hd-dvd's equal four blu-ray discs.

I already have a drive and I plan to buy a rack of HD-DVDs as soon as Future Shop and Best Buy start their fire sale. I've been checking daily and they haven't yet, even though bestbuy.ca is proclaiming on their front page that HD-DVD is dead. I hope this starts soon. I might even buy a second one of those drives if they're cheap just in case my current one quits on me.
I noticed last weekend someone had it on sale for au$ 149. Shaved 100 bucks off it just like that. It'll be under $100 here before you can say 'wonder who sells the discs?'
Plus if you already bought a bunch of HDDVDs it might not be a bad idea to grab a spare player and stick it in the closet.
Not just this but for those who use their 360 as a dvd player the HD-dvd plays normal dvd's too! So if the external goes out no big.
This is the one comfort I take in having bought the HD DVD drive, I can use it to play regular DVDs without killing my console, and keep the space taken up in my cabinet low by not needing an upconverting DVD player.
If it does go down to $50, heck yeah I'm grabbing another one.
I heard someone mention Future Shop is about to pull the pin on one, but who knows. Makes sense to clear all that stock. I still remember hitting HMV for the $3.99 UMD Movie sale Nothing better than walking out of a store with 10 movies for under 40 bucks.
Argh, curse my slowness! It appears the listing has been removed from the KMart site, and using google to find the page, you can no longer add them to a cart.
Must have changed since yesterday? $49.99 at BestBuy.ca. Don't forget to pick up a few ridiculously priced HD-DVD movies to go with it. $34.99? who are they kidding? sheesh!

Amazon has at least 30% off all their HD's on up to 57% Even more if you get used ones.
I'm not sure if we're ever going to get the fire sale people expect... maybe... but think about when we have a change in game systems: it's not like Gamecube games, for example, suddenly went down to $5. People who already own HD DVD players will probably still buy movies... I mean, what other choice do they have? Buy a $300 Blu-Ray player?
This is true but I think even the distributors would tell them to go ahead, clear them out for what they can and the distributors will eat the loss. They might want until stock of players is gone though. I'll definitely be keeping my eye on it one way or the other.
Since I had the HD DVD player, I saw at Bestbuy all of their HD DVD are 30% off, so I picked up Heroes Season 1 along with Constantine. There are some good movies to be had.
I'm sure I'll have to rebuy them at some point but as long as they work.

I don't feel disadvantaged with the stick I've got.

$49 for a HD-DVD player with expected fire sales of $5 per HD-DVD. You'd have to be mad not to jump on this
Make sure to pick up Blade Runner (Director's Cut), Planet Earth and the Matrix Trilogy (among a ton of other gems).

The questions is when will the dvd firesale start. You'd think it would be soon, especially if BB (yeah, it's Canada) is declaring it dead.

I'm all over a $5/hddvd firesale if/when it ever happens.
I'll be popping into the Tech section on a regular basis now since I'm sure to hear about it here first...

Still $130 in Canada. Bastards.
I think we all need to stop avoiding the real question here:
WWMCD?

Circuit City and Best Buy have dropped it to 49.99 USD.
(Mostly human.)
E-bay prices look to be running $5-15 for used HD-DVDs. So maybe soon.
Deep Discount is offering 30-50% off their titles as well as Amazon.

Problem with the discounts at Amazon.ca is that it's off the list price.
36% off Beowulf is not much of a deal since the list price is $46.99!
The Bourne Ultimatum at 31% off is still $37.95.
I think I'll be waiting a little while longer!

A lot of retailers (at least in Canada) are planning to discontinue HD-DVDs in the near future. That's why I'm hoping there's a fire sale.
Geek Bravado | Twitter | YouTube | Twitch
Again, doesn't mean they will try and sell them. They will most likely be shipped back to the distributer.
Still, you never know...
