November 4 – November 10

Section:

It's going to be interesting to see how well Call Of Duty does this year. The market is in a kind of weird, transitional space between generations. There just doesn't seem to be the same Call Of Duty buzz as normal — where are the tv ads with Robert Downey Jr. flying a jet, for example? I mean, Megan Fox is great and all, but she's not Iron Man. Besides, competitor Battlefield 4 beat Activision to the punch in the modern shooter space.

Still, counting Call Of Duty out has definitely been a losing game for at least a half dozen years now. It has been perched atop the throne of mainstream gaming for longer than I might have ever guessed, and CoD: Ghosts is the most preordered next gen game out there, so it could have a very healthy few weeks as new systems trickle out.

In the end, of course, it matters not a whit. I'm as guilty as anyone, but if faced with the question of why it matters what game sells the most in what year, I can't really give a good answer. Maybe it's just symbolic, a vague and ethereal concern about the emblem of gaming as a cultural platform. When I look close I realize that sometimes it's as much about who is playing the game than the substance of the game itself. It's elitism, an unsubstantiated superiority complex, and it's beneath us.

Except when it comes to CoD dudebros. The hell with those guys.

Wait... PS4 is Nov 15 but CoD releases this week?

Are you really supposed to go buy a game without a console?

I won't be buying either for a few weeks regardless. I will have to really hustle to convince my wife I need to buy a PS4 when we're already overspending on our trip to Jamaica. Seriously, why is Couples Negril that much more expensive than the other resorts??

Poof VS the Cursed Kitty was robbed!

I know you can already go to gamestop and buy the ps4 controller, camera and Killzone.

Looks like it's time to figure out how to configure our living room for the return Wii Bowling

CoD yearly releases aer the equivalent to yearly sports releases, especially Madden. There was a stigma against the people who played Madden year after year just as there is one that has developed for the CoD players. I don't think much has changed, though CoD casts a wider net than something like Madden ever dreamed of doing, as we "true" gamers continue to laugh as the sheep shell out $60 for what is effectively a new set of maps. This in no way reflects on the fact that we're probably playing the latest iteration of Mario Kart, Grand Theft Auto, Saints Row or something slapped with a Star Wars label.

Who am I kidding, we're all probably playing CoD too.

Not listed, but my only get this week will be PvZ 2, now that it's on Android.

Woah now! Where did THIS come from...

Kickstarter, my friend.

No Castlevania game for Wii? What an interesting turn of events.

I'm actually kind of wanting a Modern War game again, as I haven't played one since Modern Warfare 2 (while technically Spec Ops counts, it doesn't count enough). Despite ignoring most of the hype, though, I'm more interested in Battlefield 4 than CoD: Ghosts.

I don't know why. I'm thinking about it in a purely campaign-centric perspective. I just want to shoot guys with modern military gear. Yet for some reason Ghosts holds no interest for me. Why? I've paid as little attention to Battlefield 4. Is it because I never played all of Battlefield 3? Is it more of a mystery?

So at some point this holiday season, I may pick up CoD: Ghosts. Or Battlefield 4. Dammit, I just want to know if the campaign is any good!

I bought Killzone already, and I bought a DS4 already. It works great on my PS3. It's another way for me to spread out the expense of the start of this generation, so I don't have to pay for everything on the 15th.

This week? I'm getting Guided fate paradox and the Adventures of Cookie and Cream.

Oh, really!?! That's definitely a game worth playing.

Additionally, Cipher Prime's new game, Intake, should be out on steam this Tuesday. It's a hype music-driven color-filled frenzy that pays homage to Ikaruga and Dr. Mario, and it's SO GOOD.

BF4's campaign, as I tried to tell you, isn't very interesting. The set pieces are cool looking but BF isn't really designed for a good campaign. I'd imagine ANY CoD sp campaign would be better.

We need to get you involved in mp though. I'm not much of a fan of CoD mp anymore, but BF is a fun mess once you get used to the chaos. And, yes, it's incredibly chaotic at first. Disorientating. You name it.

At this point any multiplayer game I get that is new and requires serious resources will be on PS3 (unless I cave and keep my Xbox Live gold after all). And nobody plays multiplayer on PS3 except my roommate (because he doesn't have an Xbox).

Hey I do!

And I have BF4 on PS3 just waiting for someone to play online with

Well, if I can scrounge up the cash I'd totally be up for some global gaming. Until then, mayhaps you can pull the trigger on that Resistance 3 order?

CoD dudebros

I made the (humorous) mistake of calling one a Cod-Blopper around the time Black Ops was released.

Priceless.

Hmmmm, how do you say that by mistake? I smell a rat.

The 'mistake' was calling him that to his face amongst his Cod-Blopping brethren.

The sun's coming up, kid. They'll be blopping the cod down on Fulton Street.

Done!

The Pinball Arcade is apparently finally on Steam as of Monday.

Excellent! Be sure to visit the Resistance 3 thread when you get it so we can make plans.
