Was there a push-to-talk button I missed?

Yes. I can see how that would be frustrating.

It's customizable in-game but is mapped by default to V (for voice).

Life got in the way for me, but I'll be trying to drop in on Stan's to catch up

After close to a 2 year hiatus that was a LOT of fun!

Same for me!

I said it in chat but it's been so long that I was trying to hold shift to sprint and pressed G to through Jarate....

Now I remember why I put 500 hours into this game since 2007 and was fun to whip out the ol' sniper rifle again. Gumbie and MooQuack were trying to outdo me.

I also couldn't figure out the key to type into chat to ask the question there. Not enough breaks in the action to peruse my keybindings.

My favorite bit from last night:

Usually T or Y for text chat. One of them is for team chat.

Thanks for the game night, jdzappa. I saw several great close-ups of you when I was being shown my death-screen. For some reason my mic wasn't working in-game (though it worked when I clicked the "test" button in the options). Was there a push-to-talk button I missed?

It was the first time I've really played the game. I can certainly see the appeal. I had very little idea of what was going on, and no concept of how people were building equipment or going "uber". But I was able to figure out how to shoot at people wearing the opposite color uniform as me and that was entertaining in itself.

The highlight was when I exited the wrong way after respawning and ended up in some part of the map that nobody was playing in yet. I spent about 5 lonely mins trying to find my way out. Eventually someone saved me by telling me to follow the tracks. That actually made a lot of sense in retrospect.

Enjoyed playing with you last night! That was me who told you to follow the tracks, I saw you while I was spawning. No matter how well-signed a map seems once you know it, I know from experience how confusing it can be. I didn't know if you could hear me or not.

I hope you come out and play some more with us.

Alas, I won't play again. I find myself ragequitting every time I try to play TF2 now

That's a pity - I used to love the game. Even though I wasn't the best FPSer, and couldn't manage a headshot to save my life, I could always play as medic or engie or even a Heavy.

Last time I picked it up, people were just running around melee-ing for fun. So I jumped in, ran up behind someone, and whacked them with my shiny new Eyelander two or three times. They turned around, and I whacked them once more as they saw me. Then I died instantly.

This sort of thing seems to happen a lot these days. I don't know if everyone else just has Uber Skillz, or the crafting engine gives them incredible bonuses for all their hours monkeying around ....

I just know it's not fun anymore.

Eyelander knocks your health down by 25 points and doesn't do critical hits (which melee weapons have a higher chance to do) which is probably why you couldn't kill them first (I assume you weren't hitting a scout) in your initial two-three hits.

Did you die in a glorious explosion?

Oh, so this explains why I couldn't get into the server on Tuesday; I got to play the fun and exciting game known as "refresh fortress."
