Gamers With Jobs: The Magazine

Section:

In ten years of GWJ we have gotten to do some incredible things and in the process work with extraordinarily talented people. The thing that we are sharing with you today is, for me at least, the coolest site-related project I’ve gotten to be a part of.

It’s been a year, but finally as promised we are extremely proud to share with you the first volume of Gamers With Jobs: The Magazine. A direct result of the outstanding community support from our 2012 donation drive, putting this magazine together has been among the best creative experiences I've had the pleasure to tackle. Seriously, this is bucket-list stuff for me.

Download Gamers With Jobs: The Magazine Volume 1

The magazine features GWJ writers past and present as well as a few special contributors. With all new illustrations from Michael “Sway” Konold, volume 1 includes content from CY Reid, J.P. Grant, Phil “Lobo” Scuderi, Rob Zacny, Julian Murdoch, Russ Pitts, Shawn Andrich, myself and Jeff Green, the magazine is to my mind a true representation of everything GWJ is and has been.

Big thanks go out to our fearless editor-in-chief Cory Banks for keeping this project moving and organized. Also, this thing would've been little more than a long Word doc, were it not for my wonderful and talented wife Kristin “Elysia” Sands. And, last but not least, thanks to Nicole Donner for copy editing the entire magazine a half-dozen times over. This represents countless hours of absolutely brilliant work from some of my favorite people in the whole world. We hope you love it as much as we loved putting it together.

Ok, this is pretty cool. Seriously.

Wow. This is...very YES!
That's really all I can say before I dig in. So excited to see this!
(✿◠‿◠)

Awesome. Congratulations!

So glad to see this happen. Sure looks great, just start digging in.

Also: hey, my name's in there! XD
Aaaaand, kinda choking up when I saw Nick's handle.
Got teary eyed at the Founders' Note. You guys should really give out tissues with this magazine.

You see, the left eyebrow represents Elysium, the right represents Andrich. The nose reminds me of Cory Banks, while the smile is definitely Julian. The cheeks? Graham Rowat.

Allen is the ears, and Jeff Green is the hat.

Together, they form a mighty fine production. And Voltron, but that is irrelevant.

Holy crap! This is indeed a GWJ milestone!

Congratulations are in order to you fine folk, especially Sean and Shawn. I've read you guys state how amazed you are at the site you've built, how enamored you are by the community that gathers daily.

And I agree, but I'm not sure you guys fully realize how this place is home for so many homeless out there. You've given meaning to online interactions. I've witnessed so many kind-hearted people go miles out of their way just to help, to offer a hand, an ear and a shoulder. Thousands and thousands of dollars sent to those in need. Hundreds and hundreds of free games gifted to those who needed a smile during their tough days. I've seen strangers gather for a round of drinks to honor, cherish and remember those who have left us.

Jesus, many if not most of the things that happen here, rarely happen in real life. This little corner of ours truly is something remarkable, and stands above oceans and oceans of crap online.

That it now reaches a new milestone thanks to the hard work of a dedicated group really doesn't surprise me, but thrills me to no end nonetheless.

Shalalm Baskur to you my friends.

Really looking forward to checking this out later today.

All I've had time to read thus far is Jeff Green's piece (read in my head by Jeff's voice) and Rob's piece.

Rob: What a fantastic story! Thanks for letting us into your life, and with such a rich tapestry of desperation, escape, and hope. I am glad you have found your calling that gives you such joy and relief.

The happiness I have for you guys at putting this together is nothing short of huge. It also provides a sort of goal for me, too. I look forward to reading each piece, just as I always look forward to reading a new post on the front page.

Congratulations on getting the magazine together.

The others are allright too, I guess Looks awesome, and I can't wait to read it. A milestone indeed.

I've been reading it over my coffee this morning, and it's tremendous. Congratulations to everyone involved.

Not only are the writing and design fabulous, but I think it really captures what makes this community so special. Thoughtful, engaging, and charming.

Kudos to all! Now, let's fund another one.

we need Jeff to read his article for the podcast.
It was great

I wonder if Kinkos can print and bind this with a glossy front/back cover for me. Then I'd set it on my coffee table where it would live for all eternity.

I can't express how honoured I am not only to be listed next to those names, but also to have appeared as the first feature. GWJ's been a great home for my writing for a long time. Happy happy. :).

Looks awesome! Cannot wait to dive into it later today. There is one glaring omission from this fine, fine edition. My name on the list of donors. Clarification: I did donate in 2012.

If you find good settings for this, post or email them as I have already considered doing the same thing. I'll let everyone know if I magically get on it first.

Congratulations, gents! I can't wait to dig into it while smoking a pipe next to a warm fire.

Yeah, I thought I donated too... Anyhow awesome job. So when can we expect Volume 2?

Very nice, very nice indeed.

Seconded!

Also - are these all new articles, or reissues?

Brand new writing across the board!

I've also uploaded an updated version of the file that should fix a couple glitches some tablets were seeing.

Apologies to any donors who didn't show up on the list! We tried to make it as complete as possible, but I'm sure we missed a few. We also made a point of not including anyone's real name if that's all we had.

Fantastic design work by Elysia!!!

+1 to this. Great work, can't wait to have time to read (instead of skimming) through everything tonight.

Getting some good The Escapist flashbacks from when they first launched with a magazine style design. I forgot how much I missed that.

I feel like Homestar, anticipating Li'l Brudder. Or maybe when I know I just hit play on Jurassic Bark.

Luckily (?) I won't be able to get to this until tomorrow.

+1 I want that.

Wait, I just realized -- I have a feature in a magazine.

Damnit. It was nice while it lasted. We all know what happens now. GWJ has to fold.

New stretch goal?

$25,001

We'll politely ask Julian to not write for Volume 2, and redact his article from Volume 1

Edit - wrong thread. Will put this over in the donation drive thread, where it might do some good.
