Want to Help Design The Next GamersWithJobs.com?

Section:

As you know, Gamers With Jobs is primarily run by people who have proper day jobs and a lot on their plate. Myself included. So when we're working on something new and awesome it tends to be a bit of a slow burn as we chip away at it in our spare time. There comes a point in the project, however, where the time for picking is over and we need to hunker down and get the job done.

This is where you come in. Drupal expert and all around awesome guy Jeff Beeman (doogiemac) has been working with a number of talented people over the past year getting the next iteration of the website lined up with the latest version of Drupal. Most of the heavy lifting on the back-end is complete and we've even got a good base for the site's new interface. What we need now is a talented web designer to really make this thing pop.

We're very keen to have someone who knows Gamers With Jobs and what we're all about to come on board and help us out. This will be a paid position of sorts, although it likely won't be as much as you're used to. As usual, we're at the whims of the donation drive to dictate our budget, but I can guarantee the undying gratitude of the community at large at the very least!

So what are we looking for? If you're a web designer and you kick ass, meet me after the break.

Here is the kind of help we're looking for:

- Interface and art design. Certain elements like our logo are set in stone (mostly) but things like color palette, typeface, layout and flow are all very much up for grabs. The goal is to keep things simple, elegant and focused on delivering good content and a strong forum experience. The good news is you don't have to design around ad space!

- Make sure you know it's Gamers With Jobs the moment you load the page. So many sites are basically WordPress templates these days. We're not looking to pull a Killzone and change FPS controls just for the sake of being different, but the site should be tailored to GWJ's unique content and brand. I can't believe I just wrote that.

- Examples of your past work would be great.

- You don't need Drupal experience. Jeff can handle getting a design implemented, but if you do have some Drupal chops (or want to earn some) that's great too.

So there you have it! Interested? Drop us a line using the site's contact form above and let us know! We have a rough schedule laid out for how long the work is going to take, but we can tailor that to your schedule too.

Too bad I'm just a systems and hardware guy.

We really don't want me designing web interfaces. It'd be like Wheatley took over GWJ.

This is a community vote, right? I mean my vote is behind this guy! :D

Basic HTML for everyone! I mean, that's how I do my stuff at work.

A shame I don't have any art/design skills would love to try and submit something. Code monkey don't do Photoshop

Yes. Wheatley for president! Wheatley for GWJ!

It seems like the right time to make a request.

You've said the logo will not be changing, but could we have multiple versions of our mascot to better represent the diversity of the community?

I'm thinking, have a pool of different "Stans" (and Stannettes? Staninas?) drawn in the exact same style in the logo at random when you open the site. I have no idea how technically possible or difficult this would be. If I recall correctly, it was Sean Sand's wife (blanking on your name, sorry!) who drew the original, so could she be commisioned to do a few more?

It's a small thing, but it would make a huge difference to me.

Just want to say that I think this suggestion is awesome and I'd love to see it come to fruition too.

Also, I wish I had the skills and vision to do a web design, but I don't. Alas, because this would be such a fun project!

yeah, mediafile links are broken though :(

Oh. I didn't realise that. Try contacting Ian on twitter or something? At the very least he might want to take down the broken links, if not find a new home for the content entirely.

I just like that GWJ doesn't have all sorts of slideshows and nonsense that doesn't really serve any purpose except to look flashy. But no doubt I'll enjoy whatever we end up with.

Agreed.

K.I.S.S.

Did I hear that someone was going to give out chocolate digestives?

If I donate enough money can I rename the site?

Chairmanwithjobs.com sounds pretty jaw dropping to me.

Are you perhaps looking for the GWJ OST?

Podunk Stomp for life.

(edit: link updated. Thanks Tanglebones!)

If the site is redesigned and entering the konami code doesn't do something, then we have failed as a community.

On second thought, lemme get back to you on this. :D

Just put lens flares everywhere and we're good

JJ Abrens Flares or Michael Bay-splosions... can't go wrong.

Two abilities:

1) find a user's posts easily. On Steam forums you just click the name then "all posts by xxxxx" or something.

2) find a user's tag and donation-drive level easily, by having only their name. Those should be visible on the person's profile and I shouldn't have to look for a post of theirs to find it.

This will be a paid position of sorts, although it likely won't be as much as you're used to.

Butt pats from Certis and inappropriate shoulder massages from Elysium?

edit: Because if so I might give it a shot

This site uses chocolate digestives, by continuing to use this site you agree for us to store chocolate digestives in your belly.

Yeah, I work for a web firm but all the art assets are on the other side of the wall. I just keep our databases up and running.

exciting!
and scary
im excited and scared.

it's about time we get this site out of the 90s but not to far out of the 90's like maybe 2003 or something. take it slow.

aparently excited and scared was the name of a Desperate Housewives episode.

Do you not remember the days before the last redesign? That, my friend, was a different era.

You're not kidding

Wow, I thihnk I do remember that look. That may have been aroudn the time I discovered the place.

We have 1198 registered users
The newest registered user is Sparky

LOL

Wow.

How about we just switch the design back to that one for a week, and then back to this design? It'll be like we got a facelift, without actually doing much!

Oh my

change is bad! i'm too old for change!

Crap, I wanted to read the rest of Lobo's review.

I haven't done any web design since the 90s but would something like this be what you're looking for?

Thanks a lot, Maq!!! I just had another seizure.

I knew what I was clicking on, yet I did anyway.

I'm actually a little nostalgic for those days. The internet was an exciting thing when I had to go to an internet cafe and everything wasn't just a google away.

Always wondering if the picture of a naked person would load completely or if it'd stop at just showing you an oily-looking person's head, shoulders, and kinda ridiculous facial expression?
