Official Team Fortress 2 Game Nights (PC)

I tried to play last night, but see, we do this stupid podcast, and after we do the stupid podcast, we all have to upload a 100M file to a server in florida owned by some idiot named "Julian." And for some reason that prick's server doesn't play well with me being on Steam, so I got booted, and then the fraking server WAS FULL when the upload was done.

Sigh.

But in the future, I'm right there.

Yes, but no one will hear you, because you're dead. Scratch that -- the other six guys Distantsound backstabbed will also hear you. The other night there were too many of us in a single line and he just went through us like a one man stabby buffet, AND it was
Sudden Death. I propose we rename "Sudden Death" as "Distant Sound."

You guys give me way to much credit. I enjoy playing spy but no way am I as good as some of these posts say. I fear when ppl are able to watch me after they die because I do a lot of stupid things heh.

I was waaaay too slow today. Both my ping and my brain were at fault. Subaltern is now officially my nemesis. I hate you.

Good games tonight gents and ladies! Atlas / Fen combo owns me

I was having issue with my compy 9000 tonight as something was eating my ram and processor power every 5-10 minutes for about 30 -45 secs a time. Finally it got me angry so I dropped out and low and behold.. its something from GH3 for online play(that doesn't even work!!!) Had about 75 megs of Ram and slowly growing every time it tried to do something.

Hey, I know that guy! He really is a prick.

Couple of questions for those of you who regularly play. I just got the Orange Box, and finished Portal. I was looking around TF2, and realized, except for jumping into one of the many open servers, there's not much of a chance of figuring out how to play otherwise (no bots). Is that the best way? I don't want to take a spot in the GwJ server, and then run around in circles while my team suffers.

My other question is this: does EVERYONE who plays have a microphone? If you don't are you pretty much useless in the strategy portion of the game with your team?

Go ahead and jump on a server by yourself, or when there's one or two other folks on so you can at least get a sense of the maps and the way the classes behave. Since they all have different accuracies, range, tricks (eg rocket jumps) it's worth just kind of feeling your way around them a bit. I keep meaning to do this so I can learn my way around the engineer interface ...

As far as the microphone thing goes, it's definitely a benefit. Plus you get to Female Doggo along with the rest of us when Distantsound stabs you.

It's also handy for Female Doggoing about Thirteenth. And I was wishing I had mine hooked up last night, because I heartily wished to curse out Subaltern with his terrifyingly accurate snap shots. He can be running, you can be running, both crossways -- and he raises his gun and BAM instant headshot. I've never seen anyone else do that. It's a little frightening.

The Atlas with a medic combo is scary to behold, to me at least it even outdoes the Jake/Fen combo - I tried unsuccessfully over and over to break the link between the two, whether it be by kami-pyroing the medic, stickying the medic, or rocketing the two apart to no avail. Atlas takes care of his medics, to devastating effect.

Well I think Fen has figured a way to turn the medi gun around and use it on herself. I was running after her as a pyro last night, she was on fire and on top of that I was pumping round after bitter round of shotgun in her and she just would not die!

Apparently, I'm the official Eng-pistol Maestro with 10 Kills! Bragging rigths ensue
Sentry guns belong to Rebel Blob with an staggering 139 Kills vs 90 on my side

Great games yesterday, I had quite a good time at the beginning setting up a trap for Subaltern and his crew, Fear the ill-placed Sentry

And WE WON THE REFERENDUM!!! TAKE THAT CHAVEZ!!! (way off topic I know, nevermind)

One thing you can try is creating your own password-locked server, to explore the maps in. While it won't give you a sense of playing against people, it will allow you to explore and experiment inside the maps, so you won't be lost in an actual game. Keep in mind that some of the maps are a might tricker than they might initially appear. Dustbowl is three maps, where blue is always attacking and red is defending; if blue wins a map, the game moves on to the next, until blue wins all three or red successfully defends a map. Hydro is a bunch of smaller maps, the one you play is dependent on which territories the two teams control, it might be a while until you see all the Hydro maps (though they tend to be smaller and have a more simple layout, and have big arrows pointing you in the right direction).

Even playing by yourself, you can get a sense of the different classes. Seeing how the weapons work, the speed of a class, and the various peculiarities unique to the class. You can also explore all the taunt commands so you can use your favorite at an opportune moment. There are some things you should gain a sense of though, such as the arc of a demo's bomb, or the time it takes to wind up the minigun. You can explore these things in a populated server or alone at your preference.

I would recommend the GwJ server as a good place to learn, since there are those little tricks that people forget to mention, but you will see in-game. The most important thing is to ask questions, people will be happy to explain. For example, you might see soldiers or demomen injuring themselves with their own weapons before a match starts, while a medic on the team heals them. While this might seem strange behavior, it is simply to build up the medics ubercharge (a brief period of invulnerability for the medic and his target), which charges faster if he is healing someone. I'm sure on a friendly server like ours someone would explain anything if you asked.

The only caveat to that is the level of talent on the server. Some of the people on the server are trully gifted, and may seem godly to new players. This may serve as a turn-off to someone who doesn't grow a thicker skin in a hurry.

On the bright side, the good folks are mighty friendly while blowing you to pieces.

That was an awesome place for a sentry on Gravelpit feeank. He set one up on the bottom ramp on C so when everyone was coming from A we would all run into it.

Had a lot of good games last night. I'm glad people showed up.

For new people, I would say watch the Lounge if it has an opening jump on in! If not get on a pub and play the best you can and ignore anyone yelling at you!

Also if you want to play on the lounge and its full do this.

1)Load Tf2
2) Goto servers and double click on the server and input the password.
3)When it comes back as server full select auto-retry with join server when possible checked.
4)Go play on another server, then when you least expect it.. BAMF! Your in like flint

Stick with the easy classes first, Soldier, Medic, Heavy. Then once you get a layout for a map or two down switch out to other classes and just make sure your always having fun

I would put the Pyro in the "easy classes" list. If you get frustrated because you can't get close to people, change classes, but it's really easy to get the satisfaction of setting someone on fire. You just need go get close, click and drag the flames of death and destruction across your foes!

Thx for the props, but I have to owe my skills to watching Jakeleg and having him kill me so many times. He always seems to kill me one shot before I get him. Also keeping an eye on statistics helped alot also. The one thing I've learned is how to stay alive. 9 out of 10 times it takes longer to respawn than to go find health (when you don't have a medic, thanks to all those that play the most important class of the game.) Also just want to say thanks to all the medics out there.......

Jakeleg/Fen combo still has to be the best out there.

Agreed. My wife gravitated to the Pyro class for its relative simplicity and the satisfaction of burning people. And the movement speed. The ability to retreat is very useful for the newbie, and the foot-slow classes of Heavy and Soldier don't provide that.

With all due respect, Medic is not always an easy class. EVERYONE on the other team will go out of their way to try to kill you! Sure, you usually have the cover fire of the one you are healing but that can be false sense of security. A good Medic has to keep watching for sniper dots and checking backwards for Pyros and DistantSound. (Scary, I never actually do see him.)
But I do see your point. It is much easier than Spy or Sniper. I have briefly tried both of those and sucked big time. To the point that I felt like I was giving the other team a 2 man advantage.

I seem to get the worst of luck when playing spy... I keep running head on into a pyro!

But as far as skill level on the GWJ servers, I'd say it's usually better than the so-called clan ones I've been on when searching for pub games. For newcomers to the game, I actually think that going into a server with lots of people would be the best way to learn. No one would pay attention to what you're doing with all that chaos going around, and as the enemy is distracted by your teammates, you can get a chance at killing the enemy.

Yeah, but you get feedback and tips on Stan's.
And Stan's is 99% Douchebag free.

HLStatsX reports 103 users of Stan's (thanks JakeLeg), thus my contribution is only 0.97%

Stan's, now 99.03% Douchebag free.

In all seriousness, I agree that a big server with lots of action is best. It is daunting. But good to see what others are doing, where they are placing sentries, etc. Also, fantastic feedback of GWJ. Jump in and join the fun...the water's great.

The night started off slow but we amassed enough people on Stan's and had an all out scout battle. A few people suggested taking a few screenshots and in doing so I suggested making a tower of scouts.

We try and get the crowd to settle down for a few photos.

The tower begins formation. I like Thirteenths comment.

The scout tower in all its glory.

This wasn't even everyone on the server.

A few more people got some shots so I'm sure they will throw those up some time.

Scout tower was fun, but scouts are too ADD for it to last long...

Good times tonight. Boogle, we definitely had a dance going there for a while.

It twas a deadly dance of me trying to get your turret to kill you and then let me sap it.

Scouts was fun.

We don't build much of a pyramid, but if anyone wants an amebous tower, there you go.

Also, various rounds of all one melee weapon was fun. Axes get crits a ridiculous amount of the time.

boogle wrote:

It was amazing how fast it turned into an awesome mêlée after subaltern confirmed he had enough screenshots.

For the record, we got four scouts high, with subaltern on top after jumping from the crates. With more organization, it seems possible to go higher.
