Expand Your Xbox LIVE Network of Pals by browsing the Friends lists of other Xbox LIVE members

New Experience to be made available on December 4th with the Xbox 360 Fall Dashboard Update

Microsoft is making it even easier to expand your Friends network on Xbox LIVE, starting with the Fall Dashboard Update on December 4th. Members will now be able to check out the friends lists of fellow Xbox LIVE members right from the Dashboard. With this new feature, members can find old friends or connect with new ones within the community of more than 8 million people on Xbox LIVE around the globe and send messages and game invites, as well as compare games and Achievements.

With the prevalence of social media websites such as MySpace and FaceBook, this type of capability has largely come to be expected from consumers as a means to relate in an online community. Xbox LIVE continually seeks new ways to better serve the expectations of its members, which often result in enhancements made available for free through the bi-annual Dashboard updates.

When the Fall Dashboard update is distributed on December 4th, the new default setting on Xbox LIVE will be active enabling members to see the Friends lists of other Xbox LIVE members. Members who would like to keep their friends list private can take the following steps to change their settings beginning today:

Log in to www.xbox.com/fof and select one of the three options available for your Gamertag:

* Everyone (only available to members 18 and older)
* Friends only (available to members 13 and older)
* Blocked (available to all members, and automatic for anyone under the age of 13)

Stay tuned for more information about the Xbox 360 Dashboard Update later this month.

I guess friends only would be the way to go, if you want to get other GWJers into the games, but I just think it's a little strange too.

So, I wonder if they are going to add clan support?

Meh, turned off for me.

I thought that was weird too but apparently its becoming standard thanks to sites like Myspace and Facebook.

I would much rather have a clan blade, where we could have all the GWJers be a part of it, instead of having the ability to look at everyone's friends list. Seems a bit voyeuristic to me.

Are they going to increase the cap on the Friends list?

QFT! I'm constantly hovering at 100 people, I hate when I have to consider cutting someone off of the list. Sometimes I consider knocking off RL friends because I play more often with GWJers.

That's kind of a creepy feature... I set mine to Blocked. Most of you guys are already all on it anyways, so there's no real reason to share it.

I think it's fine because instead of having to join a game with someone and add them to your friends list you can just go find them on one of your friends lists instead.

Yeah seems like a useless feature except for some obscure circumstances. The joining groups would be awesome and you could click one button to invite an entire group to a party.

On a Major Nelson podcast they mentioned that out of all the XBL users the average friends list was around 25 so they're not planning on increasing the number of friends.

Still i thought they were planning on doing something with clans...

That's hardly ever been more than a rumor. The only time it has ever been discussed in any vaguely official fashion was Bungie saying that if such an update were to arrive, they would patch Halo 3 to support it BUT they are almost completely certain it would not be in this fall's update.

A Clan blade would certainly be more useful to me. After all, look at how the GWJ Steam Community has exploded.

I think it could be useful. I'm up near the 100 person limit, and being able to find other Goodjers playing TF2 or CoD4 or some such would be helpful, especially when all you bastards are playing Rock Band or some nonsense.

"Expanding your network of Live pals" has to go hand-in-hand with a Friends list increase, otherwise it really makes zero sense.

Major Nelson has also hinted at some kind of friends list organization feature, and suggested that it was waiting for that to be finished that is the holdup to increasing the cap (which makes since, because a contact list of 100+ without organization IS a bit of a pain)

Bingo. It's kind of like browsing friend's list's on Facebook - I go, oh man, why haven't I added yet? I know I probably only half half the Goodgers on my list, doesn't hurt to add more of you.

All I really, really care about is Divx support. Do it!

Set mine to Friends Only. I don't mind sharing with you guys. Especially Mex and KT.

I'm near (was full but purged a handful recently) the limit and know, for example, that I can't add Mystic Violet because her list is full, so I also think it might be useful, depending on how intuitive/useful the interface is.

I'll have mine set to Everyone, I need more friends... I have also gone on a mass GWJ requesting spree. If you have a link to your profile in your sig, I've probably added you

There was a hint a few months ago that they were going to add the ability to sort your friends list by game being played.

I added DivX support to my PS3 by installing Linux on it.

I currently have 94 friends on my list. I'm sure to hit the 100 with all the new people I've been playing with on Rock Band. I'm thinking of doing a massive wipe of my list. Bring it down to like 10/15 people, and then start building my list again. I know I have a lot of people on that list that I just don't play with very much.

But but.. I'm lazy

Seriously though I'd get on that but I hear it could be soon. If they delay native support I'll be PM'ng you with annoying questions..

Wow, never hit block so fast on anything in my life.

This is a godsend for me, I've bugged so many people for their Windows Messenger account. Culling the list has been very tough as of late.

Now we'll never know Ken Levine's Gamertag...

Friends can see my friends list. I've nothing to hide. Not yet, anyway.

I hope this isn't the most exciting "feature" the Fall update will provide.

I'm not cool enough to care if people can see my friends list.. sorry to those on it that are.

I will set it to friends. I only friend GWJ, so my friends list is a Clan blade.

Now all you have to do is remember who's on the person you want to invite's list. Which makes perfect sense.

I say this is a great way to play "7 degrees of separation" with XBL tags.

I really wish they would have a Clan option, hopefully sooner than later, I find the friends list gets so filled up, it's not funny

I still have high hopes for this fall update but so far there really hasn't been anything compelling released in terms of info.

Major Nelson made it a point to state that this isn't the end of the Fall Dashboard update feature list, just all that they're "announcing" at this time.

I expect there's some bigger stuff still coming, especially given that this update was delayed into December.

IPTV was supposed to hit this update, but all I'm really hoping for is friends list improvements/cap increase/clan support.
