Guitar Hero 3 Announced

That's what I've been saying since they announced that and everyone told me to shut up and wait until the game was released =P

I didn't tell you to shut up. Heck, it probably will be a pain in the neck for the first time through, but I pre-ordered anyway.

Bill's making a lot of assumptions there, like assuming that battle mode is not fun, that its so not fun that you'll hate it, and that it's not skippable.

That review doesn't give the writer's impression of the mode at all. You're left to assume that he at least didnt -hate- it

The Gamespot Preview? It read like a fluff piece to me.

Edit: (oops the link says review, but it's just a hands-on impression)

They had a few hours with it at most and it sounds like that was under the supervision of Activision employees or at a show or something. I really don't like Gamespot anymore. I clicked on one of the screenshots and a full screen Assassin's Creed ad appeared and covered the screen completely.

f*ck Gamespot.

Edit2: Better hands on impression of Battle Mode, also courtesy of Bill Harris.

Don't you bad mouth Bill!

I trust my friends who have played the game (wink, wink) and if they say that the new additions are fun, I believe it.

At the same time, Bill is a huge Guitar Hero fan, so I can understand the trepidation that he has. Some fans will never accept these "game-ism" that GH3 has added. To them, the game approaches playing a real guitar and they'd like to keep the game pure. I'm of split opinion on this myself. I think the genre shouldn't drift off into gameland (I don't want to play Mario Play Guitar no matter how good the reviews are) but my mind is open. If anything, it'll make our Guitar Hero party in November a hell of a lot of fun.

Holy F*cking Sh*t! How on earth do you play that?!?

That rebuttal Bill Harris posted spoke a lot to me. The guy writing in said that it gave the game the kind of air of a quirky Japanese arcade game. Funny, because that's exactly what I don't want.

As far as TTFAF, we've been through that song before. What I do love about that video is that ostensibly, to promo it, they hired someone who was really good at the game, and even he's struggling in parts.

Testers tend to get pretty good at the games they're working on Too many companies have a producer or marketing person who rarely touches the game they're on demonstrate a game for press and the various releases they go through. You can usually tell too.

I remember watching the pre-launch Call of Duty 2 videos and thinking the game would be way too easy. The guy took tons of hits without dying and couldn't shoot for crap. Some of the other GH3 videos show someone struggling on medium and hard. I suppose that's the 'everyman' demonstration

I like Bill and I read his site often but I don't really understand his aversion to GH3. Maybe he'll come around when he gets bored of the mediocre guitar in most of Rock Band's songs and the too-expensive downloads (count on that)

Can I make a suggestion that we put a warning when linking to an HD version of a trailer or video of some sort? Kind of a pain to hit the link, only to have it run like crap for me. I usually then have to look for the regular version to watch the video.

With 6 fingers. I shudder at the realization that they still haven't shown what the solo looks like. It skips that entire part.

I'd just like to point out that all GT HD videos have a link just underneath the video that points to the SD version. I know it hurts, I can't run these videos either at work.

That's the bit of that video that irks me. They don't even show the really complicated parts of the song.

If they really wanted to make your fingers hurt just watching the video they'd show at least some of the song from the four to six minute marks. That's the craziest parts of the whole thing and they don't show a single note of it.

According to Wikipedia, the song is expected to "be the most difficult and technically challenging song in the game."

luckily

Wow, I will never be able to play that. That's just sickening.

Yes, if GH2 taught me anything, its that I should be comfortable with being able to get through the game on Hard and anything outside the first few tiers of expert is just a pipe dream.

I got about half way through expert in GH2.

jmdanny wrote:

I think I made it to the third tier. But it was all 3 stars (maybe one 4 star). Then again, I was only 3-4 starring the last third of hard difficulty. My eyes see some of those solo's with like 25 notes to hit in a 4 second span and they just refuse to relay any of that information to my brain and then to my fingers. My method is to just hit as many SP phrases as I can so that during the solos I can use star power to pull me through.

Yeah, it was generally 3 maybe a 4 star here and there. I did when I hit the tier that had Crazy on You. I just can't beat that damn intro.

Hi, first post, I've been listening to the podcast for a few weeks (since episode 50 I think), decided to join the forums today.

I'm really excited about Guitar Hero 3, I got GH2 back when I got a 360 in august, and I've been playing it way too much I've beaten all the songs on expert (except the bonus tracks Jordan and Six, I tried to beat Jordan for a little while last weekend but I gave it up this monday). The soundtrack for GH3 is just awesome, and the fact that they are mostly master recordings is even better! It will also be great to get online play (which should have been available in GH2, how hard could it be to implement?!!?!), however I could do without the boss battles.

Edit: Btw I'm gonna get a real electric guitar in 2 weeks and become a real guitar hero

Yeah, that's clearly way, way out of my league. I was able to (barely) reach the final tier of expert on GH2 and there were only two songs I didn't finish on expert in GH1 (Cowboys from Hell and Bark at the Moon), but if that's what we can expect to see from Expert then I'll be better off just playing on Hard. I won't even bother trying to get through something like that.

Come to think of it, is it wise to show a completely demoralizing track -like that one- as a way to promote the game?

Well, they have to show something for the hardcore guitar hero fans, and all the other songs that they have shown so far seems to be pretty easy (that Foghat song is a good example). Besides, the notes are all hammer-on/pulloffable, so just hold down green all the time, play the non green-notes and lift away your finger from the non-green fret quickly after playing it. The rest of the song (that's shown in that video) will probably not be a problem if you have beat Misirlou on expert, except for a part in the end that seems a little harder. I guess that the solo parts are gonna be really hard.

I managed to get to the last tier on Expert in GH2, although I pretty much stumbled my way through "The Trooper" and the like. I don't think i'll be able to come anywhere close to beating this on Expert (I still can barely muddle through "Less Talk More Rokk", which makes me a sad panda). But, if there's anything i've learned, it's that so far, each new title makes you much better at previous ones.

For instance, most songs on Expert in GH1 were beyond me. Then I picked up GH2, and now, pretty much everything in 1 is almost painfully easy. So we'll see how 3 spins out.

Actually, I haven't beat Misirlou on expert. Haven't beat anything that's in the last tier of songs of GH2 (which is where Misirlou is in the 360 version). In any case, I still have trouble with long hammer-on/pull-off sequences. Not sure I'll ever completely get the hang of those.

The key to beating misirlou on expert is just to strum like there's no tomorrow. You have to keep strumming (up and down) without thinking about it, so that you can concentrate on pushing down the right frets. When you learn to do that, there's only 2 really hard parts in misirlou, so save up your star power

And btw, if you get to the final tier on the 360 you have a good chance of beating the game, the song that I probably had the hardest time beating was Psychobilly freakout. Although Hangar 18 is pretty hard at first as well.

Psychobilly Freakout is another one that -I think- is moved in the 360 (it's in the second to last tier). I had stalled on that one for a while, but finally managed to sneak through it. (Never got the needle out of the red, though.) By tier 8 the game has reached the point for me where the work necessary to put into beating it just didn't justify the decreasing amount of fun i was having. I've since focused on improving my star ratings on Hard (managed to five star all but one song on the first five tiers) and the early Expert tiers.

Actually, I haven't been paying the game much over the past two months. Played it for a bit last week, but not sure I will again before GH3 comes out. I just found out I'm getting a review copy of that from another site. Yay!

I was at a point where I was thinking the same as you "These last songs are just WAY TOO HARD!!!". However, it's such a great feeling when you get to the final parts of free bird and realize that you are about to beat all the songs :). When I had completed all the songs, I started to play the songs that I really liked, my fav songs include Jessica, Sweet child of mine and a few others. When I had played the songs I liked the most for a while, I started to play the songs that I didn't like as much, and I noticed that I had gotten way better than since I last played them. So I suggest that if you have played a lot of other songs since you tried to beat the last tier, give it another shot, you are probably better at the game now than back then.

Btw I couldn't be more jealous of you for getting a review copy of GH3, you gotta post your impressions of that when you get it I won't be getting it until like November 23rd or something, EU delay :S

The new Tony Hawk complete with Guitar Hero 3 demo should be in my mailbox thanks to Gamefly. Can't wait to play on the big screen with the sound cranked on my broken controller!

Thanks for the tips. And yeah, I was pretty excited to find out I was getting that since I don't think I've got the bones to buy both Rock Band and GH3 (and GH3 was going to be the odd game out). Now I can just buy Rock Band. I haven't heard yet if the copy I'm getting will come with the new controller or not. I'm assuming that it will, since its quality needs to be factored into the review.

After playing the demo, I think I'm going to have to pick this up now.

Supposedly, a way to download the demo to a disc for play on a 360. No hacks, piracy or modded xbox required.

Oh and in case you're wondering what songs are on the demo:

Hit Me With Your Best Shot by Pat Benatar
Lay Down byPriestess
Even Flow by Pearl Jam
Rock You Like A Hurricane by Scorpions
The Metal by Tenacious D
