Guitar Hero 3 Announced

Was initially just going to rent this but the urge to buy on launch is getting bigger and bigger. I wanna shout "They rally round the family! With a pocket full of shells".

I wish they'd include God Save The Queen, but the lyrics probably wouldn't make it.

Sid lives.

Here's hoping that GH3 will work with the Rock Band wireless guitars, because I don't plan to buy, let alone find space for, two sets of peripherals.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Red Octane has made it quite clear that non-official GHIII controllers (including, and especially, Rock Band controllers) will not work with GH III. They are pursuing (and incidentally have always been pursuing) an active strategy of shutting out third-party manufacturers, which personally I think is stupid and short-sighted. They have even admitted that the GHIII controller on PS3 will*not* work with GH I or II, which means no one will be able to play their PS2 GH games on the PS3 (unless Rock Band's happen to work, which is a possibility). All this - including sabotaging support for their own earlier games - in a bid to force people to buy their controllers.

Harmonix, on the other hand, have made their specs public to any third-party that wants to make peripherals that will work in Rock Band. It's pretty clear from this picture who is afraid of whom.

If that's honestly the case, then f*ck Red Octane. Honestly, it's not enough to pay $60 for your game, I have to buy your peripherals? No thanks. How about $0 instead, badmouth you to my friends and give my money to your competitors who give me more options?

Assuming that's really the case, of course.

Yeah. You can feel the clash between the creative part of the game (awesome songs and cool ideas for GH3) and the "suits"(Buy our perihperal blah blah)

I might need to see a link on that, as I've been hearing the opposite.

I'll have to look up the link later - there was an interview cited on the Rock Band forums that made it clear what Red Octane's intentions are. I recall that when GHII came out Nyko had just released a controller that worked with GHI and which they said would work with GHII as well. As it turns out Red Octane switched something in the GHII game that made the Nyko controllers not work, and Nyko had to manufacture an adapter to make it work. Strangely, the Red Octane GHI controllers still worked fine with GHII, and the third-party manufacturers had to play catchup. This is why I say it seems that Red Octane has consistently pursued a strategy of exclusivity. If it turns out that I'm wrong, then I'll be happy to be wrong because I am getting both games and would love to be able to use the controllers across both games.

The official compatibility statement (which is where I got the info about the PS3 controller not working with PS2 games) can be viewed on the FAQ on the official GHIII forums: http://forum.guitarherogame.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=29097

I'll be patient on the other thing, but the trend in the compatibility statement seems to be that everything will play nice except trying to use controllers for different consoles than the game was originally made for. If I were to extrapolate from that, I'd would seem that if the game is for "console X" and the controller was made for the same console, it should work.

Again, I was lead to believe that other controllers would work for GH3 on the 360 (the flavor I paid attention to), with the difference being that the solo high note buttons would be missing.

The interview I was referring to is linked to and talked about in this thread: http://community.rockband.com/vbforum/showthread.php?t=3065

The bottom line is that nobody yet knows for sure, except for what has been directly stated in their FAQ. What most people are responding to (including myself) is the past evidence of Red Octane trying to protect their property from third-party manufacturers. I think it would be great if there were cross-game compatibility, and maybe there will be, but Red Octane does not seem interested in making that happen. We won't know for sure until Rock Band comes out and tests can be done, but for myself I'm not expecting good news.

In any case, I will be getting both GHIII and Rock Band on the days they come out, and I will be happy to test out the compatibility and let everyone know right away, at least on the PS3 side.

Hey guys,

So I was away on business for a couple of weeks, and when i get back, my Fiancee tells me that EB has called and said that the the GH2 controllers for the 360 won't work with GH3. They said I'd have to buy new ones.

Now I know that some of you are going to go the route of getting new guitars, but I already have two and don't have any complaints about them. I was just planning on using the ones I have for GH3 and probably Rock Band.

Has anyone heard that the GH2 guitars won't work on GH3 or in Rock Band? If this is bullsh!t then I'm gonna march up to EB and tell them to suck it.

I have heard no such thing, and IGN seem to back that up here:

First of all, the wireless Xbox 360 controller will work with Guitar Hero II. The wired controller, if you have one already, will work with Guitar Hero III. Don't worry about being forced to double dip.

If they did officially come out and say that the 360 GHII controller wouldn't work with GHIII on the same platform, you'd have many pissed off people, of that you can be assured.

Please make sure you record this on video for me to see. I miss the old fashioned ass whoopin's you use to give to customer service agents that try to bamboozle you

I cant speak for rock band, but isnt GH3 releasing an early demo? If they are releasing a demo for GH3 (on tony hawk proving grounds and later on xbox live), would the GH2 guitars need to be compatible for that? If they plan on forcing people to use the xbox hand controllers for that demo, its not going to be a good (re: fun) demo.

On the rock band side, there was recently an FAQ posted on a site here which basically said "Harmonix has an open platform philosophy and their games will be compatible with third-party controllers that conform to the various platform controller standards." So as long as the original GH2 guitars use what "controller standards" are, it should be fine. I'm not fond of the way they worded it, but it could be they are not coming out saying "YES, they are all compatible" just so they dont lose some guitar/bundle sales.

Last I heard there was going to be a GH3 demo with Tony Hawk Proving Grounds which releases soon, with a Live demo to follow shortly. They don't want folks to play on their standard controllers

Tell those EB games guys to piss off.

Isn't it coming out in something like 2 weeks? Do they still have time to release a demo?

Yes, because people such as myself are still on the fence for this one.

Really? Why? Track list looks good and how bad can they f*ck up the concept, really?

Because there's Rock Band. That's the one I'm buying for sure. GHIII will depend on GWJ word and how much I feel I need another guitar game.

Because we all said the same thing for GH2 and that turned out like sh*t compared to GH1.

Guess I missed that memo. I still love GH2.

Did you own/play GH1?
Consensus seemed to be that while they polished things up and got multiplayer right, the tracklist didn't hold a candle to GH1. It was still fun to play but considering the improvements to the game the enjoyment factor was about the same. Probably a bit less when you take away the joy of discovering something new.

I played 1, but didn't own it. I guess I just see GH2 as a very solid sequel instead of as inferior. "More of the same," but in a good way.

We just got to word that Activision and record label Interscope Records stroke a deal that will give video gamers the Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Companion Pack. The said expansion is a compilation of the regular version of songs that can be found in the game's track list.

It will cost US 13.98 and will be available on October 23. Aside from that, the CD also comes with a special code than can be used by Xbox 360 owners on Xbox Live Marketplace to get three additional Guitar Hero III songs.

There is no word, however, if gamers on PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii will receive a similar offer. Without any ado, here are the selected songs included in the Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Companion Pack as well as the DLC for Xbox 360 users:

* Soundtrack
o Miss Murder by AFI
o Kool Thing by Sonic Youth
o 3's and 7's by Queens of the Stone Age
o Cherub Rock by Smashing Pumpkins
o Slither by Velvet Revolver
o Cult of Personality by Living Colour
o Prayer for the Refugee by Rise Against
o Devil Went Down to Georgia by Charlie Daniels (Steve Ouimette rendition)
o Guitar Hero III Intro by Slash
* Bonus DLC
o Carcinogen Crush by AFI
o Tina by Flyleaf
o Putting Holes in Happiness a Marilyn Manson song remixed by Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs

That's an audio CD, Edwin?

Did anyone read gamespot's review of GH3 and the battle mode? Looks like there are power-ups that can be picked up and used against your opponent. I kind of agree with Bill Harris that it's not a good idea.

wordsmythe wrote:

Yes, with a 360 code for three DLC songs.
However, thats the first time I saw the song list on the CD. I think it would sell more copies if it had every song on it, Im surprised they only are using that small handful.

I feel that way as well. Granted, I have not played it yet, so maybe when you are playing it just "clicks." As long as there is a traditional Versus without powerups, I'll be happy. I'd rather win or lose based on my playing ability and not because someone made it so one of my fret buttons was broken.

Agreed, as I've really enjoyed making iTunes playlists of the songs from previous releases.

The soundtrack is put out by Interscope records. They don't have rights to most of the songs in the game. If Activision would put it out, they could probably get it done.
