Team Fortress 2 Catch All

Hey, I remember in one of the vids I watched that the documents on 2fort would drop pieces of paper behind you if you had it on your back, making it a bit easier to see where the person had gone. I thought that was pretty cool, but didn't see it in the actual game. I hope they put that in for the full version.

We played up to about 5am eastern. I know that Roo was still playing when I woke up, but for him it was like 10am when we started playing. Luckily I classes were suspended for today, so I didn't have to wake up early.

I've been a little distant lately when it comes to online MP games and haven't felt the urge to play them. I was hoping that this would hook me back in. It freaking has. It's been so long since I've had that much fun in multiplayer. So far my favorite's the Spy. I like how you have to think about your surroundings at all times to make sure no one sees you making the switch (or going in/out of stealth). I've only touched up on the other classes, but so far, I'm loving them all.

I'm hoping I'll have some time to play more tonight, It all depends on how much work I can get done today. Back to work.

We had a catch all. Till someone went and locked it. ;)

I know you're being playful but I'm all for having a seperate pre-release and post-release threads for the big games.

For those of us who have been following along it's just 10+ new posts in a thread we've been following for a while.
For anyone thinking about getting the game shortly after release, seeing 15 pages of stuff purely about pre-release chatter and hype before they can get to actual release impressions is really daunting.

P.S. Longest & busiest day of work I've had in a while. Can't wait to get home.

I'm not even sure why they're calling this a beta. It's so polished they might as well have just said they were releasing it early.

This does not feel like a Beta to me.

Well this close to the actual game's release, it's obvious that this was going to be a "Beta" in name only.

But "Beta" gets people a lot more excited than "Demo" does.

Absolutely. As much as I love Gears, its nice to have a less stressful, less frustrating game that nevertheless has more direction and tactics than Halo 2 (IMHO).

Wow, that goes to show you how scalable the source engine really is. TAKE NOTES OTHER DEVELOPERS!

Valve knows their sh*t. Even with my desktop on the fritz, they're still going to get a sale via my laptop (provided I can play a demo.)

This looks good. If there is interest in reviving WCGN, I will definately be in. What say we all?

Does anyone know where a manual for TF2 is? (Or is it not released yet?)

Most TF maps have your team both attacking and defending at the same time. So you end up picking whether to go on offense or defense. I generally start by defending the base until I figure out what the rest of my team is doing.

In retrospect I realize I wasn't too clear on that. I joined a server that was running one of the territory maps. Not Dustbowl but the other one (forget the name). So, one team is attacking and the other is defending. I joined blue and had no idea what I was supposed to do other than shoot the other team. Then, two deaths later, I started shooting red guys but somehow I felt something was wrong. Then I clued in that my GUI subtly changed from blue hues to red hues.

Also, I think the only official CTF map is 2fort.

Gotcha - I only had a chance to play 2fort this morning.

Apparently Valve got the game working at 1:00 am PST, Thirty minutes after I went to bed. After actually getting to play it, it's a ton of fun.

FPS convention is 1 = knife, 2 = pistol, 3 = big weapon. In TF2 1 = big weapon, 2 = pistol, 3 = knife/melee. It really sucks when I'm trying to shoot someone with my wrench.

Yeah, that really screwed me up. What the hell were they thinking? I have to THINK ABOUT which button I need to push for my weapons EVERY TIME. And if I get retrained, it'll screw me up for everything else.

Is there any way to tell how many of each character class there is on your team? My teams keep losing because we have too many of something, but there doesn't seem to be any easy way to determine that.

Just remap the buttons. Hit tab malor.

Yeah, it's just dumb for them to have done that at all. It should be 1 for knife, 2 for pistol/short range/alternate weapon, 3 for main gun, 4 for first utility, 5 for second utility. Pretty simple. There's no reason to change it. It's like we're all QWERTY typists, but they're defaulting us to Dvorak because it's "better". Very, very dumb.

ranalin: the only CTF map so far that I've played is 2fort. All the rest have been CP maps.

I truly dislike the sudden death thing. The whole POINT of TF, in my view, are those long, slogging stalemates. It was a feature, not a bug. Sudden death pisses me off, because by the time you've really mapped out the problem and you're ready to try some different solutions.... time up! Screw you, no puzzle solving allowed in this game. You're not quick enough, so you get only 1 more life.

That sucks.

Edit to add: It also has the side effect of screwing over engineers, because if they make a really tight defense, but the offense isn't good enough, they get PUNISHED for it. It appears all their stuff gets dismantled, and the whole match restarts with just 1 life. It's a gigantic change in the game, and not one for the better, IMO.

Hey, what's the voice program people are using? Anyone care to link me and give a brief synopsis on how to find the GWJ rooms?

Dude. It would take you two minutes to remap those controls. You could have changed them in less time than it took you to complain about it on the internet.

There's a sticky post on how to set up vent. There's also ingame comm.

As for grouping up make sure your in the GWJ Steam Community and you can see where everyone's playing.

While your point holds, it's still a head-scratcher as to why Valve decided to rock the boat on those controls.
Plus you can't play at work, but you can post!

This makes me smile for some reason.

Also I'm liking all the positive impressions. It gives me one more thing to look forward to whenever the orange box hits the 360.

No, Podunk... I type very fast, so I guarantee you that paragraph cost less time than remapping the keys, since I'll have to make sure they work properly for all the classes.

If they hadn't reinvented the goddamn wheel, it would have been necessary to neither complain NOR remap.

It doesn't bother me since playing 1st gen mmos so much has given me the ability to quickly retrain my fingers to press numbers in arbitrary sequence.

Ah, thanks. My apologies for the spam (and this one too!). I think I skipped past it as I didn't know what Ventrilo was. Perhaps adding the word "voicechat" to the title would make it clearer? (just a suggestion to throw to the winds)

Wow.

I'm planning on having a 24 slot server available for private Goodger-on-Goodger action later today or tomorrow. I will post details when I have them.

That's awesome jake. I'd be more than happy to donate a little money to help cover a server bill if you need. Let me know.

Does anyone have a low to medium level machine, something around their recommended specs? Valve's pretty good about not forcing the latest and greatest for hardware, so I might still be able to play this.

I'm playing it on a Pentium IV (3 GHz) with a Geforce 6800LE and 1 GB RAM - certainly not high-end by today's standards. TF2 is working really fine on my machine. Doesn't even get the CPU fan spinning madly like Painkiller does after a minute or two.

Indeed.

Counter-Strike has numbered weapons this way for years. Nobody complained. It takes about 2 whole minutes to get adjusted. I don't get the outrage here.

jakeleg: making everyone look bad since UT2k4! For the nth time, thanks jake.

That's great, Jake, i'm so looking forward to this tonight (damn clock, move!)

I played some more on my lunch break TWO whole rounds! My god this game is good, i totally lost track of time!

As for sudden death, i hope its a server side option so we can have it both ways. But the sudden death does add to more of the excitment. I was playing a soldier and we went into sudden death, an engy and myself found us behind the wave of enemy troops slaughtering our team, it was like 2-7 because my team was the sh*t. But because we some how slipped through the lines they ran towards our base leaving myself and my new best buddy to capture the points and win the whole game for our team!

Again TF brought back that pins and needles feeling because when we got back to the last point, which was out in the open... they started capping the point in front of this one, and on top of it we can hear them running toward us and their characters where yelling stuff like kill them! a few seconds before we capped the spot they ran out and started to shoot at us! We won and i had 5 Health left it was FREAKING GREAT
