Sony to Lair reviewers: You're doing it wrong!

I had this on preorder with a discount, even though the sixaxis concept bores me to tears (to each their own). I though the game was going to be good and I was willing to give the crappy controls a try, but then i ran into some review that said the controls were unworkable and there was constant stutter/etc. So I canceled the preorder.

But looking at the video at the bottom of that link makes me think I should still pick up an ebay copy. I didn't notice any stutter in the game, and the controls seemed pretty normal and RELAXED to me, I wasn't interested in some frantic maneuvering/acrobatics anyway.

I think I'll pick this up, on ebay.

In the useless creative writing courses I took, one thing was always hammered into our heads: a work should be able to stand alone. If the author (or anyone else) has to explain anything that isn't intentionally left obscure, the work is incomplete.

A solid piece of advice. Maybe not worth the price of tuition, but it's something!

Then again, creative writing folks usually intentionally obscure things rather than writting so badly as to be unintelligible.

Um... so yeah, Dragon dev doesn't like PS3 shooter's use of motion-sensing! Yep

I think it's funny how Warhawk had horrible controls but Lair doesn't only because the flying object in Lair is organic. At least Warhawk made the sensor controls optional.

Well think about it, you're trying to pilot a fricking dragon. It's not supposed to control well.

Optional and quite well done. With enough practice you can become a demon in a Warhawk using Sixaxis. I tried playing Lair the other day and it felt really, REALLY clumsy. Plus it just felt like Rogue Squadron on a dragon instead of in an X-wing, those guys seriously need some new game designers. And the lead designer is reminding me more and more of Mitch Gitelman from FASA studios which is not a good thing.

Plus Warhawk's motion control are awesome. They are responsive and accurate and with a little practice become the best way to play the game by far. Lair was none of those things.

Is there any mention of this game getting an update that will, y'know, make it good?

Yeah, well, I'm not telling you the rest of the stuff I learned! Those are mysteries and you must join the guild to learn.

Don't make me pull guild rank on you, son.

On an entirely different note:

What Metal Gear Solid 4 won't feature is any substantial Sixaxis control. Although the team at Kojima Productions had experimented with various ways of using the PS3's tacked-on motion sensitivity, like shaking the controller to do a barrel roll, they've decided not to use them. "Sixaxis is pretty hard to work with," says Kojima Productions' Ryan Payton, "as other developers have found out." What MGS4 will feature is rumble, thanks to the Dual Shock 3 controller.

I know a good use for motion control. When you shake the controller in violent frustration at a game (or throw it), the game should cheat for you and let you past whatever you're stuck on

No motion controls and rumble? Current PS3 owners are screwed. I'm not buying one until Dualshock 3s are included in the box.

Sony's taking the art of screwing their customers to a new level with the PS3, it's almost impressive.

It's a shame, really. I want to like Sony, I really do. We had a great history starting from the PS1. Makes me feel like a spurned lover now. On the bright side, by the time it'll be worth owning a PS3 it'll probably be affordable. MSG4, FFXIII, don't fail me now!

I'm a Sony fan, I've gone through the PS1 up to PS3 and have a PSP. There are a bunch of games coming out that I'm looking forward to, but they are so schizophrenic on how to handle the Playstation 3 that it really seems like they've lost complete control over what they're doing. The left hand has no idea what the right hand is doing and it is doing nothing but damaging them at this point, they need to go into serious damage control mode at this point.

The only reason why I have a PS3 is because of how screwed up the whole 80 GB conversion is. I didn't want to wait too long and have nothing more than a 200 gigabyte hard drive that needs patches downloaded for each PS3 game it runs. And it'll still be at $600 while the Wii is at a nice $99.95.

"Hey it's new butyou'llloseps1andps2fullemulation and it'll still be the same price!"

Idiots.

Ok so I rented Lair and played probably 3 hours or so (5-6 missions). It's actually not that bad a game IMHO and here are my impressions.

I really didn't have much trouble with the controls the only thing that was kind of hard to do was the 180. But in the missions I did play there really was never a need to do a 180 but sometimes I would try to do one because someone was behind me and it was the quickest way to get to them and it would take me a second try. The story was actually fairly interesting and the graphics bordered on great.

My number one complaint with the game was the missions were sometimes very vague as to what you were supposed to be doing. One particular mission kept killing me after about 10 seconds because I didn't realize where the people I was supposed to protect were. Another issue is that the core gameplay is simply what everyone expected. That is Rogue Squadron on dragons. While the graphics are quite pretty the framerate suffers for it and often dips quite low.

The other kind of cool thing is that this is the first game to support remote play via the PSP. I'm really not quite sure if it's just my network or what, but even on a local network connection the game was too jumpy to even attempt playing. It's kind of strange that Sony would choose this of all games to debut remote play when there are plenty of examples of games that would be great to be able to remotely play (Poker for instance).

All in all i'd say Lair is pretty average and not really the debacle I was expecting which truthfully was a bit disappointing.

I wonder if anybody will go back and re-review it now using this patch? Probably not, but it'd be nice to know if that makes the game better, or if it's just crap regardless of control method.
