Team Fortress 2 Catch All

Pages

Now that the beta is live and the full version is coming soon, it's time for a catch-all!

If you're not part of the GWJ Steam community yet and you'd like to be, hit this thread and ask for an invite.

I'm not even sure why they're calling this a beta. It's so polished they might as well have just said they were releasing it early.

This does not feel like a Beta to me. Rock solid for 2 hours, not a single glitch, framerate hitch, nothing. Awesome. I may not trust Valve to release something on time, but when it does release, it runs like a dream.

Sounds like the PC version is pretty solid. I'm just crossing my virtual fingers that the Xbox 360 port is as solid.

In case not everyone has noticed, you get some detailed stats and achievements on a separate page, linked from your SteamID. Personally I find it just a little bit creepy that everyone can see how much you've played. The upside is that you can compare various metrics with others, the most important being Most health leached:150 (as Spy), clearly.

I had one glitch this morning after a teleport, where i couldn't move. Unless that's a feature.

I've already praised it in my GC 2007 report, and I'm glad to see that the game is absolutely living up to the impressions I gathered at the show. I'm loving it more than any other MP game in the past years. Haven't had so much fun since the Battlefield 1924 demo came out.

That's the one about prohibition and speakeasies?

I just realized one feature I'm missing. On the in-game score panel it would have been nice if they colored people who are on your friends list or in a community differently, and give you a heads up when such a person joins the game. I have found myself noticing people from GWJ when they leave a game or when it's far gone.

There were too many TF2 threads going, but the calendar event is now locked.

There are a couple of things that I found slightly off. One, when I first joined a game/team, it was not clear if I was supposed to be attacking or defending. I'm sure that wiht experience this will be easier, but for the amount of polish in the game I found that to be odd. Also, the game (I'm assuming) auto-balanced me to the other team, without telling me. I clued in after shooting a couple of my new teammates.

Another thing that threw me off a bit... they changed the order of weapons around from what is considered a norm. FPS convention is 1 = knife, 2 = pistol, 3 = big weapon. In TF2 1 = big weapon, 2 = pistol, 3 = knife/melee. It really sucks when I'm trying to shoot someone with my wrench.

What time do people start playing this? 7pm EST? I'd like to join up for a bit before my WoW time

Does anyone have a low to medium level machine, something around their recommended specs? Valve's pretty good about not forcing the latest and greatest for hardware, so I might still be able to play this.

I'll be on around 7PM EST tonight - GWJ hubbinsd

Actually, in CounterStrike it was as it is in TF2. Valve is probably just sticking with what they know.

There's 9 people playing at 12:30 in the afternoon. I can't imagine you'll have trouble finding a few people to fire the game up with this evening

I think auto-balancing can be disabled by the server admin. At least you could do that in TFC. I noticed a message in my server about the auto-balancing but it can certainly be overlooked if aren't aware of it.

Most TF maps have your team both attacking and defending at the same time. So you end up picking whether to go on offense or defense. I generally start by defending the base until I figure out what the rest of my team is doing.

You could always reassign the keys for your weapon slot.

I'll be the first to say that I had to reacquaint myself with which weapons were which. It's not exactly the same as TFC.

My willpower, it does nothing!! Must... resist... buying a new PC!!

Athlon XP ~2000+ and a GF4 4400 here. It's perhaps not smooth as butter all the time, but it's very playable, more so than HL2:DM in my experience.

Wow, that goes to show you how scalable the source engine really is. TAKE NOTES OTHER DEVELOPERS!

So far my home machine just shows the steam box "Loading Team Fortress 2" and then nothing happens, my work machine I get to see the intro and then a loading screen and then black. Now I'm copying/downloading it on my laptop. Hopefully 3rd time will be a charm.

the game playes silky smooth on my machine got into a 24 player map doing assault and never a hitch

running 1280x1024 (LCD REZ) full everything

My Specs:

Cd2 e6600 @ 2.4
2 gig o ram
7950GT

I believe you could pick up a middle of the road 500 buck system and play this game no sweat! Dont wait for the console play on the PC it will last longer and there will be mods and all sorts of fun stuff

What servers are people playing on? Do we have an in-house server?

Edit - Just found the 'join' link on Steam Community to join other goodjers in their game.

I played if for about 1/2 hour today, it plays and looks great and it seems like it could be fun (I have never played TF before). Now as clueless person who doesn't know the game - am I missing something or is this just CTF with classes?

My recollection is a bit rusty, but most TFC maps were essentially CTF as I recall. I think a minority broke the mold, but my memory isn't that great.

Stayed up til 3 PST playing last night. What a blast. Noticed some bugs, like falling through the floor upon death, and sometimes people show up as nothing more than floating bazookas oriented vertically, but for the most part its completely smooth while in game.

I think my favorite thing so far is rooting out spies. "Wait ... why is that sniper running that way?" Seems like Engineer is the easiest guise to take on, since they are most often well behind your lines.

My favorite moment, however, came when I was dead. I was watching the secret information room on the capture-the-flag map. A demoman was lobbing stickybombs onto the desk with the documents, nonchalantly. Just as he finished and began waiting, the sound of footsteps came from off camera - a scout runs up and hops on the desk, and kablamm! The timing was perfect, and there was something about that stocky blaxploitation badass taking down that scrawny little dude.

Basically, the game is an endless string of hilarious moments, and the slapstick keystone cops design is perfect. Can't wait to get home from work!

Man, i just love the atmosphere, the details, the animations. It's all there. Feels like we all work for ACME.

Played for 20 minutes before work this morning. Beautiful graphics and atmosphere. My quick impressions of the classes I played:

Scout - Love the speed, forgot about the double jump. I couldn't hit anything with that bat, but the shotgun worked great.

Sniper - Classic sniper.

Pyro - I was just kamikaze with him. Try to run at the enemy while dodging fire until close enough to light them on fire. I had the coolest death shot with him. I attacked a HW guy, he unloaded his gun into my gut as I lit him on fire. The picture was a HW guy, cackling while on fire, shooting into the group of my teammates coming around the corner behind me.

HW - I love the ability to keep the chain gun spinning but not firing bullets. Sit around a corner with that thing whirring and just quickly tapping the left mouse button anytime somebody showed themselves. Waded into a group of 4 enemies at one point, took down 2 of them as they all tried to run from me as I was about 15 feet from them.

Soldier - I can't hit anything with those rockets, they fly great, just too small of a footprint for somebody who isn't a good shot. Kept just aiming at people's feet. Was good at shooting my own feet instead of rocket jumping.

I want to put time into Demoman as I think he'd fit my passive agressive kamikaze style better.

We had a catch all. Till someone went and locked it.

Jumped on for a game at lunch... is there CTF maps out there? The one i was on was the CP map which i'm not a huge fan of.

Took me awhile to get handle on what i was doing but man is it fun!

One hour left of work! C'mon!
