[podcast] Jeff Green Questions!

I want to know how he feels about being a role model for all of us over 30 guys. It's comforting to know one can still game at his advanced age.

What does everyone else do while Shawn Elliot is talking on the podcast?

Where does he see pcgaiming going from here? Is the bottom here already? Wouldn't something like dual-monitor support in all games help pcgaming standout from the console crowd? Does anyone really care since there is no one really driving the pcgaming bus? ( except the few crumbs Ms throws at it.) What happens to pcgaming when/if all consoles get a more mouse-like interface like the wiimote?

The most important question: Any word yet on Battlefield 3 for the pc?

Does Ryan Scott actually sit in the room when they record that, or does he sneak out after introducing himself? Actually, he might have left the company 5 years ago and these are sound clips that they play because they miss him so much.

If i hadn't met guys just like him at our game shop over the years i would seriously think the same thing.

Has things like the "hot coffee" scandal had an impact on the way he approaches his reviews for certain companies or certain titles? Has it effected his interaction with or reputation among media outside gaming journalism?

Has there ever been a game or something in a game that was so juvenile, that it made it difficult to maintain constructive thought in a review? Or would he adapt the style of the review to fit the tone of the game?

I haven't pointed him to this thread, since that would ruin the surprise, but Jeff Green has asked me to tell you all to "Bring it!"

He might mean pie, I'm not sure.

I like pie.

Here's a classic opening question (or two):
"Who the hell are you, and why exactly should we care?"

He's supposed to be important and worth listening to, right?

Boxers or briefs?

Deep dish or thin crust?

Chicago or anywhere else?

Actually, if you get that last out out front, I can know whether or not to skip his interview.

What kind of pie does he like?

I hear he likes sand pear pies...

Ask him about DRM and Bioshock, ie. was it worth it?

When we talk about journalism and fans, I suspect I'll mention Shane and Mark arguing over who is the bigger Zelda fan on the 1UP Yours podcast.

Could you ask him why they let Garnett still tell jokes?

Just kidding. Kind of.

Oooh oooh ask him if Sean Elliot and Shane Bettenhausen have a grudge? I remember one 1upyours where they were both on and Shane was totally frustrated with Sean, and Sean hasn't been on 1upyours since. Lets get some 1up gossip goin on!

With it's recent Direct SDK (Direct X 10.1 and XAudio2) Beta release, Microsoft has been ruffling feathers in the consumer gaming world. Certainly Creative Labs has been annoyed about the removal of DirectSound and hence it's EAX API. In his position as editor of GFW, does he feel that hardware and software developers are being forced to follow Microsoft's lead or are they given any real input at all into these new advancements? and How do these conflicts or issues that effect primarily PC game development effect Microsoft's support for PC gaming as a whole compared to it's support of console gaming?

In recent years the push for OpenGL and OpenAL has been rendered fairly mute when it comes to mainstream news stand publications. Even though they are open source and usable on all OS and hence not restricting support to only Windows platforms. In fact anything at all speaking out against Microsoft in areas such as with DirectX or Windows Vista, seems to be very low key in such publications. Is Microsoft the Don Corleone of computer industry and hence publications are afraid to speak against or chide the boss or else they might lose some credible key support?

Only two real questions I have besides the obvious question that you guys probably are already going to ask such as, "Does Microsoft's backing of the magazine effect honest impartial reviewing of games that carry the official stamp of approval of Games for Windows by Microsoft?". At least I would hope that such a question would already be in the queue.

Difficult questions to answer but truthfully these questions are the ones I keep seeing pop up in one form or another on multiple forums in the gaming community.

Good questions!

Way back when the switch happened, Jeff did a huge run of interviews answering questions like this one. Between the actual content of the magazine and their own podcast, it's very clear to me that Microsoft is very hands off with the editorial process.

It will be part of the discussion, but we're probably not going to spend much time talking about that. There are tons of interviews out there with Jeff that go in great detail.

I can't think of any journalistic integrity questions that haven't already been asked so I'll just post a few "1Up fanboy" style questions...

The GFW Podcast has been rather aloof lately. Is this just the chaotic nature of how the podcast is structured or is it just a quiet time for PC Gaming news?

Ziff Davis just recently announced new sales and technology executives for the 1UPNetwork. Are there any plans in the works to change the format of the podcasts or incorporate more advertising?

Are there any plans to create video versions of your audio podcasts? The 1UPShow is excellent as a weekly programming but I'd love to have more content.

I know it was a bit of a joke when someone first mentioned it on the GFW podcast a few months ago, but seriously, have you guys thought about doing a non-videogame, geek culture oriented podcast? Through all of the 1UP.com podcasts I've been introduced to a ton of new television, movies, books and comics (The Walking Dead!) that I otherwise never would have never known about.

What was the book on Stalingrad that Sean Elliot mentioned he was reading?

Great questions, everyone. I think we've got plenty to work with. We'll likely skip the more technical questions about the Games For Windows initiative. There's obviously some interest there, we'll pursue an interview with someone from Microsoft who actually works on it.

Yeah, sorry for posting my questions. I got the wrong end of the stick...

Ask him in what way GFW magazine can improve itself. He doesn't have to state any specific initiatives but which areas is the magazine weakest in?

For example, IMO EDGE UK nears the pinnacle of magazine editorial and content but suffers from the main problem of print over digital distribution - i.e. time to print. Does GFW have any initiatives to combine digital and physical media via another online service such as game for windows Live!, steam or gametap in a parallel move to newspapers?
