July 23 – July 27

Section:

A week like this is as good a week as any during the summer doldrums to think about what's actually coming up in the fall to be excited about. It feels like it's been a while since there's been many big exciting releases, and arguably it's been quiet since Diablo III launched back in mid-May. But really, we're just a few weeks away now from the beginning of the turn into the holiday season.

Here are some fast approaching dates you might want to go ahead and keep on your calendars:

August 14 — The Last Story, Darksiders II
August 19 — New Super Mario II
August 21 — Transformers: Fall of Cybertron
August 28 — Guild Wars 2
September 18 — Borderlands 2

And then, come October you get the fall release schedule launching in earnest. Also, not listed but launching in the August/September timeframe you get new versions of Madden, NHL and FIFA. And, on top of all that, Runic Games is still saying that Torchlight 2 will be a summer release, though I have my doubts.

So, the short version is, take these next few weeks and work on the pile, because it's about to get busy again.

As for this week, Prototype 2, which seems to have been largely received as a pretty good game when it landed on the consoles in Spring, finally wanders almost as an afterthought onto the PC.

Reeeally looking forward to finally playing Prototype 2. I'm a bit disappointed that it took so long to get here, but I'm glad it did.

Hmmm... looks like someone forgot about July 31st on that shortlist...

Also, not putting bets on a TL2 summer release too.

A true dead week. Good timing after the Steam sale.

What about Sleeping Dogs? That's sometime in august, right?

Are you sure July 31st and not August 14th? Wouldn't surprise me at all if we're thinking about the same game, one that Sir Sands would most certainly forget.

Yeah, I am August's Female Doggo when it comes to new games coming out.

I think shoptroll is talking about Dream Drop Distance.

I am very proud of Elysium for remembering The Last Story. A JRPG on the Wii? What were the odds?

Did he JUST add that or was I blind reading through the first time?

The Game of the Week thread has been totally consolized.

No, I actually had it there the whole time. Look, I was as shocked as you guys.

So to balance it out, I ignored Kingdom Hearts 3D. Well, not on purpose, mind you. It just kinda happened.

Ding!

I'm pretty sure the reaction to the lack of Xenoblade that one time factors in strongly.

Ah well then, carry on!

Clearly the game he really missed on July 31st was Orcs Must Die! 2.

+1

Prototype 2 was alright. Not really better than its predecessor. It falls apart in the last hour but if you've made it that far you might as well see it to the end.

Phew. No new releases for me until October
