Hellgate London catch all

supar sekrit closed beta?

More like not-so-secret Alpha. It's why I don't use Xfire. That, and I can't really be bothered to install it.

Here is the legal and eula. Nothing in it looks like xfire is against it, so it should be kosher.

After talking to a few guys at Flagship, the Xfire chat stuff is supported in game, hence the showing up of the Alpha on Xfire. They said nothing about pointing out that people are playing, as long as they don't break NDA.

Remember the first rule of Fight Club? It's the same first Rule of Hellgate: London

Just two months and two weeks left to go, fellas!

You know, the more I see of this game, the less certain I am in wanting to buy it. I can't put my finger on it...it looks great, has co-op, and I like the setting, but when I look at the gameplay, something about it is turning me off a little bit at a time. I'm really going to need to play a demo or the beta, or something before I put my cash down.

You know, the more I see of this game, the more certain I am in wanting to buy it. The whole future-demon theme at first turned me off, but the more I see, the more it looks like this game will be very much like a successor to Diablo2. Yah, sure, I would like to play a demo first, but assuming the initial reviews aren't horrible, I'm there.

MY UNSLAKABLE THIRST FOR THIS GAME IS UNQUENCHED BY THE BLOOD OF THE THOUSANDS OF INNOCENTS WHO ARE SLAUGHTERED DAILY IN AN EFFORT TO APPEASE THE TIME-GODS WHO SO TORMENT ME IN DRAGGING OUT THE RELEASE DATE. OH FLAGSHIP, WHY DO YOU TAUNT ME SO?!

Yeah, uh, what Farscry said... I think.

It always freaks me out when you sign your posts, as it's my name, too, and I feel like you are calling me out on something...

Speaking of which, you will all most likely be able to play the beta at some point, and if not that, then I think that the first two acts will be included in some sort of demo. That is, unless plans have changed.

LOL. Sorry. Being an editor I've found it impossible to break the habit of putting my name to whatever comments I write.

Just curious Seph, but is the release date still Oct 31 of this year? It seems to be getting pretty tight time-wise for them to release a beta, put it through its paces, incorporate changes and have it out in ~2 months.

Digital editing? You mean without a pen? Blech!

My understanding is that Oct. 31st is completely doable. Word is that the Alpha is really the Beta, and they are moving full steam ahead. Art lock occurred a few months back, and while there are minor adjustments being made, it's all pretty solid.

On a related note, the Hellgate:London novel (not the story of the game, but set in the universe, afaik) just got handed to me yesterday. As soon as I finish "Fulgrim" I'll give it a read and post my opinions.

What's a pen? You mean, like you can use with a Table PC?

I got an alpha invite from a nice industry pal, downloading it as we speak. I'm giddy

I honestly don't think it'll be out by Halloween. I've peeked over shoulders of friends and while it looks good, it's still early alpha.

You're the only person I've heard yet say that the alpha didn't look better than most betas ever do.

Most of Flagship Studios' success or failure is tied to this game, which is why they were BOUND to delay it, as they already did before. And they will delay it again. And again. Until it is perfect.

The same thing happened when these guys were working on Diablo 2, only back then, slightly LESS was at stake. I predict March '08 as a realistic release date.

I actually think the universe of Hellgate: London is pretty rich for story potential. I tried checking out the Dark Horse comic (browsed it in a shop to see if it was worth buying), and was pretty disappointed. It wasn't nearly as excellent (writing/story or art) as it could have been, at least not the first issue. I didn't bother following after that.

Hopefully the novel is better; there's certainly potential for some great stories!

Regarding the novel:

I'm only a few chapters in and I am enjoying it so far, despite the author's chronic reuse of words in consecutive sentences. It's a bit too early for me to really form an opinion, but the book goes to a few places I didn't expect, such as a guided tour of South African preserves, and animal poaching. This spiced things up a bit.

No Pvp for non-subscribers? No lan?

Lame.

They're doing a closed beta promotion thing right now : spend $225 you can play the game a month ahead of time for a few weeks!

buy one of these statues($225) before august ends and they'll send you a closed beta key. Hahaha, whatta deal!

cough

In other news, looks like they've opened submissions to sign up for a chance to join the Alpha on the main site. I did, though I doubt I'll get in anytime soon. My odds of winning the lottery are probably higher.

... though, if I won the lotto, I could just get one of those statues...

Well now I feel dumb for not scouring the boards more.

At least I didn't make a whole new thread.

Hey, no need to feel dumb. We all miss threads; I just wanted you to see the discussion already going on that in case you wanted to jump into that thread too. And the coughing thing is simply a social custom here.

Beta signup page is up.

This is a not a test of the emergency broadcasting system - Hellgate: London has officially gone gold! Plus, we've got a single-player demo coming this Friday!

So, they decided not to delay it. Big mistake.
