Anyone use Twitter?

Is Jaiku free to recieve and post to by SMS in the UK? I tend to do the majority of my twittering by phone.

I don't think so, not for sending anyway. It's a Finnish number, so I would imagine you'd be charged International rates for sending messages to it.

I'm the same as you in that I do the majority of my updates/responses via text message. So I'm going with a hybrid solution, using the UK Twitter number for SMS and feeding my twits into Jaiku via SMS. (Kind of gazzumped my own revolution here, but hey-ho.)

I just hope Jaiku can sort out a proper UK number. This is the killer fault for me at the moment, even though a get a tonne of free SMS messages a month on my contract (including International ones).

Leo Laporte was paranoid about Twitter's name infringing on his TWiT trademark. That's hardly advocation.

I've not heard that before, but it sounds tenuous at best.

He was bemoaning Twitter's reliability the few times I've heard him speak about it, along with a few others.

Wikipedia wrote:

Prominent Twitter users include U.S. presidential candidates John Edwards and Barack Obama, futurist Warren Ellis, Stargate Atlantis actor David Hewlett, podtech.net blogger Robert Scoble, Xbox blogger Larry Hryb, and tech podcasters Leo Laporte and Veronica Belmont (as well as many others). On April 4, 2007, Laporte left Twitter for Jaiku due to trademark problems with his TWiT trademark.(4)

From here. Also, Leo himself on the switch.

The other reason I stick with Twitter is that I have other friends who use the service. No way will I get them to migrate.

After leading the charge to Jaiku, I'm going to have to concede defeat.

Only a few of us made the switch - with even fewer travelling on to Pownce. Plus I'm not able to send texts cheaply to Jaiku, and can't send texts at all to Pownce.

So it's back to Twitter for me. I'll leave my Jaiku account open and keep my Twitter updates trickling through via RSS. Pownce I'm not bothering with until the service (drastically) matures.

So goodbye and hello.

Edit: Thanks for the details, Demi. Sorry I didn't respond sooner--hope I didn't come across as being confrontational about the whole thing.

Well, personally I like the potential that Pownce has, and maybe Twitter may come around yet. Personally I dig Pownce, but know most are still using Twitter, so I post to both.

I have the Pownce developer on my friends list, and they are getting the public API ready, so it should start having some more features I would think. It is in beta still.

I don't think you are confrontational Wrestlevania.

If they sort the client out so I can actually run it, plus they work some more on the overall usability of the service, then I'll certainly give Pownce due consideration.

Thanks, Rocky. The ambiguities of communicating via text always bothers me, especially when it comes to disagreements.

In my effort to be less of an Internet hermit, I am now on board.

I made one too.

I need to stop being a follower.

I think more GWJ on Twitter can only benefit Mankind. Or enslave them. Your choice.

C'mon, people. If I can make Certis join, anyone can. JOIN US...

I wrote an open-sourced Twitter client for Vista (works on XP as well if you have WPF installed) if y'all want to try it.

My Twitter is http://twitter.com/a7an.

Does anyone here still use Tweeter? I thought it had already passed into the great internet beyond... joining the ranks of Geocities and NCSA Mosaic...

I don't remember you adding me, a7an. Consider yourself followed.

I'd test your client out if I could ever make myself reboot into Vista. I only have eyes for Twitterrific. I like your UI, though, looks sleek.

Welcome to the fold, my son. Here, put on this track suit and these tennis shoes. The mothership comet will be here soon.

Don't forget the bubble wrap suits!

I'm back in the Twitter fold: http://twitter.com/legion

I'm partial to services where I'm able to sign up and get the name Legion before some mouth-breathing jerk-off takes the name and then never uses it, like everything else. In my mind, it's just one jerk-off, and one day I'll find him and beat him.

I was even in the Xbox Live closed beta test in 2002, and the jerk-off was in one stage earlier than me, got the name, and never used it post-beta.

Anyway, back to Twitter, I never really saw the point of it as a sitting-at-my-desk website, but now with a good mobile smartphone, I see more possibilities.

I've used this for a while, although I don't have that many entries. XD

Nothing spectacular in my stream. I'm no Warren Ellis.

http://twitter.com/mattperrin

I use it mostly for mindless dribble and communicating with business associates but I am definately hooked into the voyeuristic aspect of Twitter.

I'm at http://twitter.com/paleogamer but there isn't much there. I'll probably start using it more since I just got a new dataphone that will let me update when I'm actually doing something.

Though I hope I never get this bad.

http://twitter.com/elliottx

Just started it up today because of this thread and my love for the PA comic about twitter. Once I get a smartphone(probably in the next 3 months) I'll probably actually use it.

Ok, I'm buying in too.

I'm tired of feeling disconnected from my digital life.

I've been on for ages: http://twitter.com/Mixolyde

I didn't get really prolific with it until I added the twitter bot to my gtalk list. I have a browser tab open to gmail/gtalk everywhere I go, so it's easy to use and doesn't cost me SMS count. I do send from my phone occasionally when I think of something while oot and aboot.

Also, I added a little box to show updates on my wordpress blog: http://www.techhouse.us/Hosted/Brianw/

Yay! Another mindless distraction to get me through the day! Never really had a reason to sign up before. Thanks Demi.

Does this make me twit now?

Heh, heh. The Phoenix Mars lander is now tweeting...

I feel your pain. The jerkoff who stoll the steam community boogle told me he stole it from me. Ass.

I've been surprised at how long I've kept up http://twitter.com/certis so far. I was sure I'd lose interest in a few weeks.
