Tera Box Art

April 30 – May 6

Section:

Now that it's launched on the Vita, we are again in a situation where it is not hyperbole to say that a Mortal Kombat game is on every system that will stand still for it (believe it or not, there already was one out on the DS). Whether or not that's a good thing is a question we will leave as an exercise for the reader.

Awesomenauts seems to be about as close as you can get to actually playing an old-school, Saturday morning cartoon, and I'm all over that over-the-top cartoony action. With the recent dearth of good split-screen options, this one deserves a second look for those with more than one gamer in the house. Though if you don't play it in your jammies, I think you're missing out.

But they aren't my game of the week. Tera is first out of the gate with what appears to be the new fashion in MMO's: real-time combat. Their assertion that they're the "only" one with that type of system will have to be reassessed when Guild Wars 2 comes out, though. Tera certainly looks pretty, and all from all indications I've heard it's going to be a solid addition to the MMO universe. So they're my choice for Game of the Week.

Sniper Elite V2 is just what I need at this stage in my life. I'm looking at it like a palette cleanser from finishing MW3's single player campaign and as an appetizer for Max Payne 3.

Bullet time in video games is a trope that will never get old for me.

Edit: I'm even more stoked because the devs said something about the demo level being particularly linear since it was an early mission, but that later on, the player would be given more choice.

I can't stop playing the demo for Sniper Elite on the 360. I love its "deal w/it" level of realism, though the going is so slow and tense that replaying the demo over and over and aspiring to ace it on the hardest difficulty is pretty much satisfying enough.

Tera, the first PPMMOG (pantyshot pedo massively multiplayer online game).

Tera is first out of the gate with what appears to be the new fashion in MMO's: real-time combat. Their assertion that they're the "only" one with that type of system will have to be reassessed when Guild Wars 2 comes out, though.

I've been in the GW2 closed and open beta events and am currently playing Tera. GW2 is more traditional tab targeting and hotkey combat - similar to WoW, EQ2 with some minor twists thrown in with some abilities. Moving while casting is probably one of their best new features.

Tera while also having hotkeys, is indeed more "action" based - much more similar in playstyle to Monster Hunter or DC Online where basic combo attacks are mapped to the mouse buttons and targeting is done via a FPS style recticle. It's just pure fun - especially hunting the BAMs. (BIG ASS MONSTERS)

Yeah, I may need to check out Tera--I've been hearing good things about this one and the real time combat seems interesting. Plus that video LightBender posted makes the game look damn fun (even if it seems just like regular MMO combat)

Might grab Nexuiz if there's some positive buzz floating around it after launch. Haven't really heard much about it, but had a favorable impression at their PAX East booth. Unfortunately, that's the sort of the game that lives/dies by the community size, so if no one's playing there's not much point in buying :\

Glad to see Amoebattle is getting DSiWare'd. The art style is very DS/GBA so that seems like a natural fit (and the iOS version is pretty good as mentioned on the Conf. Call recently).

Anyone know anything about the Call of Cthulhu game? This is the first I've heard of it.

I think it first came out on iOS. Can't remember much else about it though.

Yeah, from what I've heard of some of the character choices...the community around Tera might have more in common with "To Catch a Predator" than WoW.

Momgamer only briefly explained that it took some time for her to find an acceptable image for this post. I am glad she took the time.

Tanglebones: Yeah, from what I can tell, shoptroll hit it. Wasted Land is the PC version of this. I've heard some troubles with the iOS version, but I've also heard that it was worth working through them.

Yeah... don't image search too hard on Tera. About the best you can hope for is stuff that looks like an Evony ad.

As far as the gameplay, Lightbender, I've played Guild Wars 2 also, and it played a heck of a lot like the video I looked up for Tera. But I'm not a MMO aficionado. If I had to pull a comparison it would be Final Fantasy XII with hot keys (which, now that I think about it, would RAWK!).

She's not kidding.

Shouldn't that furry have a flap...or something?

I would kill to have hotkeys for Xenoblade as well.

TERA's combat is unique for an mmo, and it makes a huge difference IMO, as so much of an mmo is combat, its a big deal when that combat feels fresh and fun. Yes some of the race/clothing choices are questionable, but don't let that dissuade you from checking out the game, there is a large assortment of race choices, from huge dudes that look like they are made of stone, to freaky demon people, to fat little animal guys. It's actually nice to have this kind of real variety, as opposed to something like SWTOR where all the models were basically the same, with minor cosmetic differences that didn't amount to much.

Here's a video with better explanation of the combat than I can put in words:

I've not played much of it but it's basically a turn based combat game (ala xcom, etc) with a bit of a levelling system to it in which you play first world war soldiers versus Cthulhu cultists and creatures of the Mythos (early screenshots showed 'Dark Young', at least).
In theory it's supposed to be using the CoC rules set (I think), though that might be a bit of a stretch given how little of that game is about the combat.

The only problem with the PC version is it's exclusive to some weird Intel app store...thing....that I've never heard of and have no intention of ever installing.

That CoC game looks interesting. May have to give it a whirl later on.

You don't say? (NSFW)

What bothers me more in that image isn't the frontal shot on the woman in the front, but the oversexed tweenage-looking barely-dressed girl in the back. Uh... that's f*cking creepy.

Tera is an action mmo and is definitely standing high but its definitely not the only action mmo out. Vindictus and Dragon's Nest have been out and quite solid, from what I understand Raiderz is also going to be joining the action mmo list. Tera's combat systems were very enjoyable and I had a great time fighting in that game. Though the rest of the experience felt pretty standard. So with Diablo 3 on the horizon I'll probably be passing on Tera for now. That doesn't mean I wouldn't recommend getting it and knocking some heads around. Very great game for that indeed.

While Guild Wars 2 is definitely more active than WoW in its combat gameplay, its hovering between the systems found in WoW,EQ, DDO, etc and Tera's(and other action mmo's) very brawler-ish action system. Just got off of the Beta Weekend Event and I was disappointed to find out that it wasn't what I was hoping it to be. I usually like playing front line melee characters in action mmo's but GW2 gameplay didnt allow for that. Their dodge system needs work and its far from being up to the standards of melee in the action mmo's I've mentioned. Poor melee classes really got reamed a bit. That being said...GW2 is a great step in the right direction for its many other systems. Questing was alot more enjoyable and very much so left you open to just explore and enjoy the world. The challenge that maintained (while the sidekick system was working properly) across every area, made it feel like you couldn't let up just because you had gained a few levels. While I won't be doing melee, ranged was enjoyable enough that I'll still be playing it when it comes out.

I wish it was up on top of my list of games to buy, I always play a sniper anyway.

Tera. I haven't seen any disturbing images, so I don't know what y'all complaining 'bout.

I think part of the problem is that Tera is a popular name among people who make SEO a priority for their photos.

But screenshots of the game that I've seen do tend to show a teenage-looking girl with visible panties.

It's not that they're disturbing as in one of the SAW movies. And it's not just hairy-palmed screenshotters.

Here's the different versions of the official box art. Even the soi disant warrior looks way more, um, negotiable than one would think. It is Korean game, and its a fairly common style for them, but it still raises a nearly Vulcan brow over here.

And 'Smythe is talking about stuff like this.

Oh man, of all the Tera artwork I'd seen, that's the first child-like one I've come across.

Well there's a lot of it. Also, the EU version might be slightly less pornographic than the US/Asian, apparently.

Gotta love the vacuous, nonstop swaying.

The fully-adult legs with the 8-year-old upper body is not only disconcerting but weird. Like she's some horrible mad scientist experiment gone wrong.

What, the ears, tail, and curly-que antenna-thing didn't give you that impression!?

She isn't a "human" though. She's what they call an Elin. Holding her to human proportions doesn't kind of work.

And as I said, the art style of this sort of game coming out of Korea is a known issue - Aion isn't much different. And it's not just MMO's - anyone remember Magna Carta: Tears of Blood?

Heh. We were talking about Magna Carta 2 in IRC not too long ago. For a similar reason, actually.
