Guitar Hero 3 Announced

I'm very much looking forward to GH3. I'm in the same boat as some others that they just don't have fun with GH2 on anything over medium. I really should just sit down and play a song like 20 times until I get good. Problem is that I always go back to have "fun" playing on medium and then forget how to play on hard. I definitely like the speed of hard, but I hate that stupid orange button.

You get used to it after awhile. Mashing away for an hour on a single song is no way to get better, by the way. You burn out pretty quick that way, and start to dislike playing the particular song. If you're having trouble on Hard, I can't recommend skipping Surrender enough. The other four songs on Hard are all much easier to learn the orange key on. I played Heart Shaped Box and Possum Kingdom a few times to get used to the orange button. Once I could pass them both easily, I went back and three starred everything up to Woman, where I got stuck for a bit.

Keep in mind that most songs have synergies with other songs. One skillset (say G-O stretch chords) will be displayed in a song once in awhile, and then a few songs down you'll have a song that spams stretch chords at you. You're going to see that a lot - especially in hard and expert, so when you get stuck on a particular song it really is helpful to go back and play through the earlier songs trying to get higher scores. This way you don't get tired of practicing songs over and over, you don't get burned out on the game, and you hear and play a wide variety of different music and chord types. Keeps the ears and mind pleased while keeping your fingers practicing a number of different excercises.

If you stick with it, you will get used to using the orange button. I'm to the point where I like Hard far better than Medium or Expert. I'm completely stalled on Expert; I finally passed Freya last week, but am nowhere on the second to last tier of songs. On Medium, it just feels too slow and once you get to the point where you can effectively use the Orange button it feels like you're wasting your "talent" (heavy emphasis on the air quotes) by playing without it.

Yeah, while I have fun on medium, I can 5 star every song easily. I have the gold 5 stars on probably 15 medium songs. I really wish there was a level between medium and hard. It would be as fast as hard, but no orange button.

I definitely felt the exact same way about Hard for a couple of weeks. I think one of the keys to me was shifting my hand down to put the pinky on the orange key and sliding the whole hand up one key to green when necessary, so Im never really reaching for one or the other. If you play that first and second set for a while that way, you really get used to it. It might be worth a try. Hard is the only way I play now. Expert is ok but stressful. Hard is just plain fun now.

Frankly, I've been in the hard/expert territory long enough that I like the oranga button, but started to hate having to go all the way down to the green button. Kinda weird?

I could see 3 working, Rhythm+lead+bass and I know that Pearl Jam plays Evenflow with 3 guitarists, but I'm not too sure how 4 players would work... unless, that is, you wanna sing.

heh- I mentioned the 4 just to make use of the 4 controllers that I will own at that time... Most likely I'll just get the one wireless guitar... so Rhythm, Lead, Bass would be just fine.

mmm... Les Paul. I can't wait.

Ya know, 3 player Guitar Hero 3 would just plain make sense.

Any word on Xbox Live support?

New Interview, with some.. Guitar Battle sh*t or something. I don't know, I guess I'll wait and see.

Apparently it WILL be online.

Badass new trailer for GH3

I can't wait for this to come out. I've been able to beat all songs on the 360 except for Jordan on Expert. That song is just pure evil!!

What's kind of funny is that I had big problems on The Light that Blinds, Six, and Trogdor on expert until I was showing off to a friend. At that point I had this fear of failure and looking bad so, luckily, everything just seemed to click. I will agree 100% that Psychobilly Freakout is terrible. What I did when I beat it what I did was use star power when the notes went R-B then to Y-O and I only hit one set of the notes. You end up about even (a little bit higher maybe) on the rock scale and I found I'd rather only miss 50% of the notes then more than that. Granted if you use that strat you have to be spot on with a good part of the rest of the song =)

Look at the left player's track at about 1:24. The green target jumps up. Does anyone know what that means?

Edit: Found it here as something you can inflict upon your opponent in Battle Mode:

Broken string: One fret button on the opponent's guitar will not work until it is fixed (by rapidly tapping the button).

Damnation. Why so confrontational? Now the only way I'd finish a song playing beside Yoyoson is if I kicked the back of his knee.

I'm learning to play Jessica on the real guitar, and it's actually much easier than on Guitar Hero

When we're playing against each other, my wife likes to throw an occasional neck-punch.

I think there's potential in the boss battle concept, at least as I picture it. I picture it as something like Stevie Ray Vaughan and BB King on stage playing a few seconds back and forth, both playing off, and one-upping each other. If they can translate that into a fun sort of improvised-sounding rock out vs Slash, I can dig it.

Looks like some new songs have been leaked/announced, or I havent been keeping up. Some are crazy. Check out this one!

Through Fire and Flames - Dragonforce I can't even imagine what a mess of notes that looks like on Expert.

Other cool ones I hadnt seen before, La Grange, and the Chili Peppers' Suck my Kiss is a cool song.

Wikipedia has a pretty current looking list.

I took a refresher look at the Wikipedia page and I'm still excited to play GH3. It's just lost a ton of mindshare to Rock Band. The songlist still looks great, and if I'm playing single player (which I will at times) I'll appreciate the variety of songs and theoretically the value. At the end of the wikipedia article there's this quote

Lead developer Alan Flores states in a GameSpot interview that there will be "over 70 songs", (over half of them master recordings) on the final soundtrack for the game.

If that's true, if the game ships with 70 songs and "final soundtrack" doesn't mean after they've milked all they can from DLC, then that would be excellent. Previous games have had 45-50 songs and I imagine once the formula is down they can probably crank out songs. There are 4 difficulty levels, and bass/rhythm guitar to create tracks for.

Here's hoping that GH3 will work with the Rock Band wireless guitars, because I don't plan to buy, let alone find space for, two sets of peripherals.

its the kinda stuff they played before they got all kalifornicated.

I am very pleased to hear there is more Iron Maiden, and my awesome detector went to 10 when I heard there would be Dragonforce. Hell yeah.

Wow, you must be really old or really young. Or sort of lame.

I hope these guys decide to make their guitars interchangeable between games, because I'm going for Rock Band first and Guitar Hero 3 second.

I just listened to a sample of that Dragonforce song. Good god that sounds painful.

JESUS. CHRIST.

WHY.

EDIT: Now with Grainy YouTube Video.

If that's expert, that's not as bad as I feared. Horrifying, but not as bad.

EDIT EDIT: No, no, wait until the solo. That's just as bad as I feared.

That's a modded Guitar Hero 2, not GH3.

Fuh, didn't know there was a hack for GHII out.

It's the same as GH1.

Woo I got a job testing GH3! All I can legally say is that it f*cking rocks. And Boss battles are both fun and semi optional, in that you can give up and still continue with the next set.

Compare it to GH1. STAT!

Actually Im playing GH1 for the first time tonight (never had a PS2, borrowing my roommate's console and friend's game at the moment)

So my initial impressions are that the new one is cleaner, brighter, more exciting to watch, and it plays like f'ing butter. Im having trouble hitting the solos in GH1 because they're so sexilly playable in the new one (even better than GH2). As a result you play more fast and loose, where GH1 wants you to play so very tight and extremely precise. You'll find yourself strumming the first note of a long solo and letting your fretting fingers fly while the other hand busies itself grabbing a beer. Show-off!

I think it will make us wish they'd re-release GH1 and 2 under the new play engine.
