Team Fortress 2 Has Randomized Map Generation

Uh, not to be a stick in the mud but is there a reason why you all think this game is going to be released in the near future? I was under the impression that I could wait for n-state quantum cores to become affordable first.

Because Valve has said "September" for a long time, and continues to say so? And because the press has gotten to test playable preview builds that are very close to being done?

This game is very nearly done. This isn't DNF, there's a playable game (well, set of games, counting Portal and HL2:E2) here.

Guys, it's a cel-shaded style, I wouldn't be surprised if the requirements were lower or equal to Half-Life 2's. Given the HL2 Toilet Toss contingent, I'll likely go PC.

I read somewhere that Valve is coding DX10 support into the game and that the DX10 features will work on XP as well as Vista if you have a DX10 card. How their gonna pull that off I don't have a damn clue.

Ah, here it is

I played through a healthy portion of HL2 on the Xbox, but I decided to wait for the 360 version rather than start over when I recieved the 360. If I would have been able to transfer my game save, I'd still have it, but since I was going to have to restart it anyway, I deceided the 360 version with all of the extras was worth waiting for.

I didn't even know people still got worked up for shooters on the PC anymore. The format, while technically better on PCs, has been darn near perfected (in terms of fun) for the console. Given that, any game that is primarily online would be really right up the 360's alley. It may take TF2 to finally knock Gears off the map.

It's just that 2007 is the most kick-ass gaming year in, like, forever. BioShock, Mass Effect, Quake Wars, UT2007, Frontlines, Team Fortress 2 (with HL2:E2 too!), Left 4 Dead, GTA4, Spore, Forza 2. Halo 3 is just one of a crap-ton of games this year, not counting any under-the-radar stuff that ends up being great, or the great stuff that's already come out this year.

So what you saying is that the rest of 2007 is going to be a terrible time to try to increase my savings?

I am leaning towards the PC version. Valve gives out free maps for their games. I'm not sure Microsoft will let them do this on the 360.

Same here, but I think I will end up getting it for both systems especially for achievements on the 360

Yeah. I already gave up.

PC for this all the way. TF2 + Console = Recipe for frustration.

Xbox 360 for me... I got no other options.

we'll have to switch from the Toilet Toss to TF2

Yeah I have to say I'm gonna go PC all the way on this one.

Count me in the PC boat, I can't wait for it to come out!

Good point Certis, but I'm still going 360. I own that one, and other friends, non goojer mind you, have 360s and I may be able to bring them into the fold.

For growing gaming I'm going 360. Gee.

I agree with Certis: TF2 is the logical progression from Toilet Toss. Ignoring the fact that I don't even have a 360, this is a definite PC buy for me.

Sounds alright. I guess I don't mind map memorization; it lends itself to as many pros as it does cons. Not only is a static map going to play better no matter how good their algorithm is, but there's also run to be had in spawning, and knowing exactly where the enemy is most likely to be. Remember looking across the map in UT Facing Worlds and being able to point to the three places you knew for a fact that dudes were hiding? When all players know the maps inside out, you begin to try to out-think your opponent.

"That Red's expecting me to take the bridge around the back, so he'll be there, so I'll go in the front!" "Hah, that Blue probably expects me to be out back, so he'll come in the front!"

With random maps, it seems like there would be a lot of blundering about. With TF's focus on multi-tiered maps, you'll have bridges with sniper points covering them... but with nobody knowing how to get to those points. Seems like it would push TF more towards chaotic deathmatch type stuff, which is what its whole design is about getting away from.

Still, I do see the appeal. Myself, I'd like to see a mix, and let the people hosting the servers decide whether they want to run static or random maps.

Oh, and PC. I was leaning towards PC anyway, and souldaddy's astute comment about downloadables pushed me over the edge. GG Microsoft marketing!

PC version definitely, if only to guarantee solid and fair netcode.

I don't own a 360, so the answer is obvious.

PC, baby.

Quintin, will your rig be up to running this one? Certis is right about the graphics not being too much of a burden on most rigs.

I have two RealLife(tm) buddies who will most likely get this on the 360, and my PC, even though it runs HL2 just fine, isn't getting any younger. And as silly as it might sound, I'd rather put $700 on a PS3 than on a new video card. Hell, new video cards would require a new motherboard and the new motherboard would require a new CPU, and Power Supply and... everything. No thanks. So 360 for me. I guess.

Probably both. I want to play Ep2 and Portal that come bundled with the PC version, but I want the community, netcode, driverlessness, and couch-factor of the 360.

This is where I'm at - I could upgrade, but all I'd play is TF2, Episode 2, and Quake Wars, so... yea, not crazy about paying $150-$200 per game to upgrade.

Looks like we got a host here!

If this has split-screen support then it is definitely the 360 for me. It looks like it would be a great game to complement Halo for those late night, post bar, trash talking showdowns.

I could use the advantage.

The better question is whether or not it'll ever get back up and running. I'm about to run out and pick up a motherboard for the Athlon 3200+ getting delivered today. Piece of sh*t Biostar board went back to the shop and my old P4 is going into storage.

More than likely, it'll run. But I've given up on the headaches of PC gaming (patches, crashes, installs, etc). And I've never been good enough that mouse & keyboard makes that big of difference for me anyways.

I don't think that will happen as a result of TF2, because the player base is, as detailed in this thread, splitting.

now if only they had it go with Windows Live.

It's funny, Valve has PC vs. 360 play working right now. But since it isn't a Windows Live title, you gotta wonder, why did they bother? Can they make it happen out in the wild? Very interesting to say the least.

I'll be on PC, definitely.
