10 Years Ago Today...

Duke Nukem Forever was announced...

10. Years.

I think it's pretty rare for an in development, unreleased game to make one feel old.

Wow, I do feel old.

10 years from now we'll still be waiting for the first Duke Nukem patch to be released.

Same here.

You know, Team Fortress 2 has been in development almost as long. TF2 was announced in 1999. Going on 8 years. I think I still have a pre-order in for that.

Back in my day...

AnimeJ wrote:

Yeah... I was 14. I was using a 60MHz Pentium 1 computer with 16MB of PC100 RAM, and a 14.4kbps modem.

And it had a 500MB HDD... "all we'd ever need" my ass.

At least it's a real game with a real, REAL release date.

No game should or can take this long to produce. There is no DNF. Its now a legend in video game lore that will be passed down to the next generation and for them to pass to theirs.

Until the world ends.. or we run outta gas.. whichever comes first.

Damn. I feel old.

Gather round, and I'll spin you a tale,
Of the game that never died.
DNF it was called,
a moniker true,
for development never was finalized.

The two Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity were proposed, authorized, announced, designed, launched and successfully landed upon Mars where they have been exploring the surface for over 2.5 years.

Heh. And NASA is a slow, inept government bureaucracy, right?

I don't see how this game has any chance of succeeding, assuming it ever comes out. There is no possible way that it can be good enough to justify a decade plus of development.

The thing is, the technology has to have changed so many times that the only useful assets that could still exist from the beginning would have to be some sound effects, and maybe the plot. Knowing Duke Nukem 3D though, I seriously doubt there was any decent writing to save. Hell, I'd be surprised if anyone has written any plot for it yet. Given how long it's taken, I'd bet even any textures they'd drawn up early on are probably too low-detail for modern hardware and 3d engines.

While they've always maintained that there's some kind of continuous development cycle going for DNF, I suspect they've probably dumped everything and started over several times over the years.

Every time I see that list, Sinatar, I just shake my head. I mean, it keeps getting longer and longer!

Sony PSone

Eh, that sort of anachronism found in the list makes me doubt its accuracy.

What are you talking about? The PSOne came out in 2000, well within time to fit into this list.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psone#P...

I was about 11 when DNF was revealed. I was also giggling as I watched strippers show me their pixelated oogaba in D3D on my 486+ 75mhz machine.

My goodness... I was 13 when it was announced.

The following things have happened since Duke Nukem Forever was announced...

WOW. That's insane. Looking back on all of that makes me feel so old. :/

10 years ago, when I first step foot on America, my English voabulary consist of hello, goodbye, OK, and apple.

Ah... never heard of it. In my mind, PSOne is the original Playstation. Looks to me they're trying to cram as much as possible into that list. PSX, PSone, DS, DS Lite, who cares ? It's the same exact console.

someday I shall play DNForever on my Phantom console.

someday...

Hey, I landed here too 10 years ago! I knew English, but only had $500 cash in my pocket and no credit cards. (btw, renting a car with cash = not easy.)

PSX was something else entirely.

PSOnes are not that uncommon, just not monumentally successful.

Edwin wrote:

to be fair, before that weird hybrid PSX system came out, "PSX" was a common abbreviation for the PlayStation.

SommerMatt wrote:

Yes, but even "common" isn't strong enough. Everyone used "PSX". The only ones that didn't were the ones who typed "PS-X" instead. You can tell who owned a PlayStation back when the games still came in long boxes by our stubbornness on this.

PSX is how I've always referred to the original Playstation. I don't think I've ever typed it any other way, and very very rarely see it called the "PS1" or any other non-PSX variant.
