Most Iconic Game Sounds/Music

- Katamari theme

Oh no. Thanks for reminding me. Now it'll be stuck in my head once again.

Let me add the opening and closing of the doors. I even heard that one pop up outside doom itself.

Yes, the Doom door sound is iconic and shows up often in sci-fi movies. There's also a Doom monster spawn sound that pops up every once in a while in the strangest of places.

Nice list Rat Boy!

EDIT: I'm suprised no one mentioned - "FATALITY" from the legendary Mortal Kombat series.

How's 'bout:

Hadoken! is pretty iconic I'd have to say. That and Shoyuken perhaps?

You're still a skimmer, but at least you get style points. =)

Mario Bros. all the way.

There are a lot of other great, classic songs and effects, but everyone knows Mario -- even the ones on the Conference Call that can't pronounce his name.

Man, though, I quote the opening to Ultima 7 all the time. I'll often be found responding to problems with, "Something is obviously amiss."

*) The button pushing and weapon switching sounds from Halflife.

*) Also from HL: "Major fracture detected." (preceded by crunching...followed by flatline beep)

*) HEADSHOT! (Q3:A...or a mod of it, maybe it's from UT?)

*) DENIED! (UT2004)

*) The Mario theme, of course.

As far as music/melodies go:

I know I've mentiened in another thread but...
The Loading screen music for Tunnels of Doom on the TI 99/4A.

And Super Mario Kart music from the main screen and circuit 1.

* Entire soundtrack from Mechwarrior 2, and shame on you people for not saying it sooner

I was going through people's lists specifically looking for this one. Only game soundtrack I've ever actually listened to outside the game as a piece of music.

The ambient music of Diablo in the town of Tristam. Gently careeming from pastoral to frightening. And the music/sounds once you reached the levels just under the church levels. Man, those seriously creeped me out.
That wooshing door sound in Doom, that suggested you were just about to get some company.
And then, pretty much anything Minsk said in Baldur's Gate.

Guilty as charged. At least the super deformed Ryu made up for it

Intro to Interstate 76.

Double shame on all of you.

Almost all of the routine sounds from Half-Life (especially the 1st aid and charging station effects) and Metroid Prime (especially the door opening, visor scan, and power-up effects) have been forever burned into my brain.

M-M-M-Monster Kill!!! - Unreal Tournament 2k4

The Zelda Flute/Whistle from the first game that transported you to the various dungeon entrances.

The Final Fantasy Tactics opening theme.

The metroid 'beaming in' melody

Oh yeah, I forgot about that sweet, comforting sound of the med station....

I just wanted to be the first to call it.
This has "Thread of the Week" written all over it.

To carry on with the with CS sounds, the 'The Bomb has been planted/defused.' seemed pretty iconic. I can still hear it now! Oh the joys.

All Your Base Are Belong To US.
Well it's not good iconic, but that wasn't one of the qualifications.

HOSTAGE DOWN
HOSTAGE DOWN
HOSTAGE DOWN

The opening theme of Animal Crossing for the Gamecube.
I don't know how many time have heard it.

You guys have walked all the way around it, but how about the Final Fantasy victory animation fanfare?

-Early Madden Football Tackle Sounds

-Early NHL Series Bodycheck Sounds

-That Goddamn Dog From Duck Hunt

Ooh Ooh, I have another one.

From Tribes - "Our Flag is Mined"

Arcades -

Playing Punchout Arcade game "Left hook, Right hook, MIGHTY BLOW! MIGHTY BLOW!"
Donkey Kong music
Hang-on soundtrack

Sega -

Ahhhhhhh! Get Ready! - Space Harrier Master System (plus the main song is fantastic).
Master System boot up sound
Sonic the Hedgehog boot up "SEGA"
Revenge of Shinobi soundtrack Genesis
Jet Set Radio Soundtrack - "You Gotta make a STATEMENT OF INTENT!"
Really as a whole as I'm typing this, I'm thinking of Master System/Genesis games I've played and I remember the music from a lot of them. Those systems really had some top notch music for their time.
"Boom! He's on his Back!" - one of the Madden games for Genesis

Nintendo -
Legend of Zelda ocarina songs, Super mario bros. music, Mario coin sound, "It'sa me! Mario"

PC -
Hearing Roland MT-32 soundtracks from various games like 4D boxing, Space Quest III, Altered Destiny, Rise of the Dragon, and Heart of China at my friend's house for the first time. I started saving up for a midi card after that.
"Want some rye? Course ya do" - Return to Zork
The sound from those creepy robots in System Shock 2. Don't remember what they said, I just remember having to pause the game for a little bit.
"Girl in the tower! I'm reaching out! Please tell me what to do!" - Song from Kings Quest VI
"Grow up young lady. That's what they all say." Song sung in beginning FMV of Kings Quest VII which I heard dozens of times while trying to get Windows to run the game.
"Save your soul, or the Darkstone will shine!" - song from Darkstone
"Canus. Lupus lupus" - Gabriel Knight 2 (the one that was FMV)

As for music that didn't belong. Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. I cringed every time there were enemies because I knew that awful anachronistic music was going to start up.

Starcraft:

"We are five by five."
The opening of a door/hatch.
Deployment of Siege Cannons.

"Want some rye? Course ya do" - Return to Zork

I know lots of people didn't like it, but I still crack that line amongst my family.

Song sung in beginning FMV of Kings Quest VII which I heard dozens of times while trying to get Windows to run the game.

God, that game hurt to try to get working. I don't think I made it past 4 screens.

In no particular order:

-"Concept of Love" from JSRF. Oh, and "Hello Allison" from the same game. Brings a smile to my face every time.

-Halo Theme. Causes flashbacks, dontcha kno.

-The auto guns from Half Life 2. Tweeeet! *random gun noise*

-Anything the UT2004 announcer says. RAAAAAMPAGE! Oh, and the sound the Behemoth makes...time to get the hell out of there!

-"No, it did not happen that way!" Prince of Persia Sands of Time.

-Liberty City Survivor Ad from GTAIII. Oh, and the Ibuzu Monstrosity. All of them, actually.

-"I was expecting....sorry, old habit." -Tauren outside LHC.

-The entire Homeworld soundtrack, but particularly the vaguely arabic theme from the Gardens of Kadesh.

I think if I was going to pick anything from Tribes it would have to be "SHAZBOT!"

That sound usually accompanied the sudden failure of what I'd thought was a well planned zerg attack. I heard it in my head as soon as I read your post.

Good suggestions from everyone here

Ahh so true. Every sound from that game is forever burned into my memory.
