LOTRO Kinship Name and Server Choice

March 30th will see the start of open beta and permanent character creation for those who have pre-ordered.

As the date is drawing near, we need to settle on a Kinship name that fits Middle Earth a little better than Gamers With Jobs.

We also need to decide upon a server of the 7 announced. Sticking with Brandywine would be straightforward but I have the feeling it will be the most crowded at launch.

So, chime in if you have ideas and what your status with the game is, ie founder, plan to buy, haven't decided yet.

Not planning on playing LOTRO, but from the WoW launch, I'd recommend a server _not_ in the top half of names, alphabetically.

Oogaba?

No seriously.. How about a name of a forum member? Certisians or Demothesisians?

Oogaba would be a great name for a monster player kinship.

Here are the seven server names, going by Senor Duck's advice we should go with Windfola.

Brandywine
Elendilmir
Gladden
Landroval
Meneldor
Silverlode
Windfola

Ok, I'm just going to give in to the nerdy temptation. Here are some suggestions from Sindarin (Elvish) translations:

Oogaba
Emyndil Hills-lover (or Lover of hills)
Emyn Ien Maiden Hills
Emyn Hiril Lady hills
Nan im emyn Valley between hills

Apparently elvish doesn't lend itself to more than allusions to cleavage.

And for Wiener Bomb, forget it. The best thing I could come up with was "Sausagecrist", Cleaver of Sausages.

I'm not sure how much time I'll spend in the game, but if I come up with any decent names I'll post them.

Fellowship of the Oogaba
Two Oogaba Rule Us All

Is "Dick in a box" an option?

I as you know will play the game.

I also have a friend who is in beta that will be playing with us. In fact basically the 3 of us, Ulrod, Badferret, and myself are the current GWJ kinship active members.

Come 30 March we will be making our characters that will carry over into release. I have at least 2 more friends that will be giving the game a try at that point.

Also the open beta level cap of 15 with 5 characters per server many of us may have a lot of characters and maybe on multiple servers.

Since there are only 7 servers to start with I would stay away from current server names, first and last on list also. I do not think it will really matter that much but Silverlode would be my choice because of that.

As for kinship I personally think maybe we are getting ahead of ourselves. If we end up with only half a dozen or so active members I think we will be better off finding and joining a kinship together instead of making one that is not very functional.

So I say we pick a server for now and once it all starts we do a roll call thread and we can add each other to friend list. Then depending on the true number of us that really play we can form a kinship or join a kinship as best makes sense.

There is some wisdom in Maladen's post, althouth I will add that I have heard that "cool sounding" servers tend to get more populous, and "Silverlode" is kind of cool sounding. On the other hand, "Landroval" - what the heck is that? How do you even pronounce it? Might be just the thing.

My 2 cents, but I haven't even used my free beta yet, so don't worry about me.

I don't see a problem with either holding off on a kinship or forming one during the open beta and being prepared to abandon it if we don't get a healthy population of forum users at launch.

As for kinship suggestions, I really like Emyn Ien (Maiden Hills) and Emyn Hiril (Lady hills) as they are obviously lore appropriate and have a connection to the site.

I haven't decided whether to stick with the game long term, but I plan to play some during the rest of the closed and open betas at the very least. I tend to agree with Badferret. May as well form a guild and just see how it goes.

What's the connection of those two names to the site, though?

It's all about the Oogaba, Devil.

I like Emyn Ien, and I recommend Windfola. Can I just demand such things by fiat because of my obvious Awesomeness?

I have put in a name request with my local LOTR expert (ie: wife) and I'm hopeful she'll have some ideas soon.

Another term that might work is "pinnath" which means "ridges". So other options might be:

Pinnath Hiril Maiden Ridges
Pinnath Ien Lady Ridges

But again, just some suggestions. I'm not sure Elrond would approve of our abuse of his native language.

From what I understand from the LOTRO forums, most RPers are going to start on Landroval.

Hmm, so less @$$hats, but possible population issues in the future?

Landroval sounds good to me, if that's where the RPers are. I'm not hardcore on that front, but as said, it tends to be a good asshat filter.

So, barring a great suggestion by Brennil, how does Emyn Ien on Landroval sound?

Closed beta ends Monday night (26th) expect Dragons and I am guessing a quest or NPC that buffs toons to level 50.

I'm with Badferret.

I finally preordered, I even threw in a 8800 GTS for good measure. Can't wait.

I picked up my pre-order and I'll be ready to go. Since I played beta last I've rebuilt my system and wiped my drive. I'm guessing we can still download the current client and it will be good to go for the pre-order beta (with some patch downloads I'm sure.)

For what it's worth, I think I've hooked up with some good folks who have a kinship going. If you decide that it's easier to join one than create one, please check it out.

It's not totally decided yet - but it looks like we're going to the Windfola server since it's not expected to be as crowded. If you feel like it, come join the server even if you start your own kinship.

And it looks like a lot of the RP guilds are also going to end up on Meneldor as well as Landroval.

This has got my vote. I'm hoping to be around for the beta, pre-ordering and all that.

Sounds good to me... I just got my pre-order purchased, so I should be ready to go... No 8800 upgrade here though

"Emyn Ien on Landroval sound?"

Sounds good, I'll see you in the roll call thread in a week.

I pre-ordered on Thursday from Amazon, but I haven't gotten any kind of beta key yet. Do I need to do something? I would like to try it out tomorrow.

I know ordering from Gamestop it took almost 24 hours to get the key.

Malor, in case you didnt see this in the other thread, here is Rabbit's guide to getting your key from Amazon.

If you don't use their media feature its hard to find the first time.

Go to the "my profile" page.

Theres a line in the top block that says "View your media library"

Once you are there, you click on "access your digital purchases and bonus materials"

You should see it there. Hit the "download" button and it will just take you to a page with the code on it.

Fellowship of the Bling!

Thanks so much, Badferret! Downloading the client now. Too late for the weekend, but, eh, it's not going anywhere.
