Pipedreamz

Section:

Messhof, the experimental game developer behind Randy Balma: Municipal Abortionist and The Thrill of Combat has brought yet another mindf*ck to life with his latest, Pipedreamz, over at Adult Swim Games.

At first it seems slightly tamer than his previous games, with a “radical” pig straight out of an ‘80s-era platformer telling you to eat some meat. As you sit to chow down, you’re informed that you can only eat when no one else is watching, as the others are “unclean.” Letting them watch you eat results in vomiting and having to eat even more to make up the difference.

Then, as you complete your meal of random pink meatstuff, you are suddenly transported to some waves and a surfboard, where you try to score points in a surfing game. Except the points are rewarded as special hamburgers (i.e., “mega burger, extra sauce, extra cheese, spicy mustard”). After a set amount of time, you’re back with your bro’ the pig and ready to start your shift flipping burgers.

After a shift of flipping burgers, your character seems to bash his brains in and you go back to surfing. As long as you can keep from getting fired during the burger-flipping portion of the game, the game loops forever—as far as I can tell.

There’s plenty of subtext here and hidden meaning, as well as a healthy dose of complete nonsense.

Talking Points: What does the meat represent? Does the character actually kill himself? Are there any significant choices in this game other than to drop out? Is there any meaning at all, or is it just nonsense?

Is there any meaning at all...?

No.

This has been another edition of simple answer to simple questions.

(Or did you mean the game specifically?)

Nihilism isn't the answer. Heck, it's hardly even an answer.

Say what you will about flipping burgers, but at least it's an ethos.

Vere is the special burger, Lebowski?

I have a hard time looking at this game without thinking about
1) College grilling when I'd get sick on too much meat, and
2) Better Off Dead's Van Halen scene.

re: 2 - I want some too!

I really love Messhof's Adult Swim games. They're awesomely mental.
