Bold Predictions 2011

Section:

It's that special time of year again when we all put on our funny hats and predict the future. Last year wasn't pretty for me (I said that last year, too) as I predicted the decline of Rockstar Games only to give Red Dead Redemption my game of the year nod a few weeks ago. I don't think there's enough jam in the whole world to make that crow go down any smoother.

As hope springs eternal, so do our predictions. This year I'm going to nail it. Things are going to change, I can feel it. My first prediction is so rich in nutrients, you won't have to eat anything for the rest of the day.

Every MMORPG that launches with a $14.99 monthly fee will fail to meet their goals, hemorrhage staff and ultimately scale back until it's positioned to scrape by.

It's time to make your predictions, folks! Make sure you check out last year's thread and see how you did. As usual, I'll be locking this one down in a few weeks.

Shawn's Predictions

The PSP 2 Will be Announced With a Touch Screen - For real this time. Last year I predicted the PSP2 would be announced with a touch screen and 3D support. Despite the near constant rumblings, Sony still hasn't shown us what's next for the platform. But this year ... THIS YEAR, we'll see an announcement for the PSP 2 and it will retain the controls from the PSP while challenging the iPhone with a touch screen and their own app style store.

The Playstation Move Platform Will be Marginalized - Much like the Eye Toy, the Move platform will be around but it will not be a major force in the gaming scene. Software support will be tepid.

Kinect Will Have a Must-Buy Game by Fall - I mean that in the hardcore gamer sense. It won't be your typical shooter, but it will capture the imaginations of curmudgeonly gamers.

New Nintendo Console - Nintendo will announce a new home console this year.

Non-Rabbit Julian's Predictions

Blizzard No-shows - Diablo III in 2011? Not so much. I'm not sure though if that actually counts as bold prediction at this point. Anyone waiting for information on whatever MMO project the studio is hiding behind the name Titan will be disappointed, too. According to those allegedly leaked documents, it's supposed to ship in 2013. I'll eat a shoe or something should that actually happen.

The 3DS online experience will both rock and suck - It'll be smoother and more streamlined than the online approaches Nintendo took with the Wii and the NDS. Some games will use StreetPass/SpotPass to great effect and do some neat stuff with those concepts. And yet there will be something highly annoying about the way accounts, '3DSWare', and/or matchmaking are being managed that makes you wonder why the guys behind this didn't take a hint from the competition. Once again.

The Spy Who Dodged Me - Remember that PS3-exclusive Rockstar game Sony originally announced at E3 2007 and then re-announced at E3 2009 in order to dampen the noise of GTA IV being multiplatform from the get-go and Microsoft's DLC exclusivity deal? That Agent is so good and covert that he's not going to be seen by anyone in 2011 either.

The Indie Crystal Ball - The often delayed Fez will actually get released some time this year in order to avoid Vaporware 2011 honors. Monaco will be so great that it's going to knock you straight out of your socks*. Minecraft winning the Seumas McNally Grand Prize in the Independent Games Festival 2011? Yeah, probably. Also, by the end of the year, the former indie darling will have turned into a "big corporate behemoth that has completely sold out." Or so a really, really vocal part of the core community will claim before equipping themselves with pitchforks and torches.

* Even if you didn't wear any. That's just how awesome it's going to be.

Momgamer's Musings

Mass Effect 3 will not cure cancer Or anything else for that matter. It will launch with all due hype, but the first round of players will find they didn't get the epiphanic effect they got from the last two games and feel let down. The rest of us will ignore them, shudder just a bit as the game crosses and re-crosses the Uncanny Valley in all the cutscenes, and then go on to happily blow up a metric butt-tonne of Reapers.

Yet another set of game invites to ignore Civilization Network (the Facebook rendition of the classic) will finally launch to a yawn in the gaming press despite Bryan Reynolds' credentials with the franchise. The only saving grace will be that my relatives and friends who spend far more time than is healthy in Farmville and the restaurant apps probably won't jump in on this one.

Square still won't do a PS3 reboot of Final Fantasy VII Unfortunately, the fansites who keep drooling about this won't shut up, and it will continue to be brought up by wishfully-thinking fangirls at the drop of any hat. I'm basing my thoughts mostly on the fact that we're at the 10 year anniversary for Final Fantasy X, and I hope with all my heart they're going to do something to save Spira from the corner they painted it into in X-2 before the whole place eats itself. However, I will go out on a limb here and say the long rumored re-work of Final Fantasy VI will be announced for Nintendo's 3DS.

Allen "Pyroman[FO]" Cook

Minecraft wasn't an anomaly
There will be another out-of-nowhere indie breakout this year with the multi-million dollar magnitude of Minecraft. It will be a very good game and probably the last thing you expect. It will be a small development team unaligned with any major publisher and still be considered a "fluke" by most of the gaming press.

"Gamers" will discount Kinect/iPad for serious games, and nobody will care
The gaming press and community will continue not to embrace the iPad/Kinect for "serious" games in 2011 despite record sales of games for both. There will be some very impressive and unique games for these platforms but gamers will discount them because of the ease-of-use and lack of discrete buttons. The millions of people who don't follow gaming blogs won't care one iota, and will have tons of fun.

Without-glasses 3D (a.k.a 3DS) will become the central feature of next-gen portable devices
TVs will limit the home consoles from getting too excited about 3D without glasses, but for portable devices the floodgates will open. Almost everyone who is releasing a portable device capable of gaming will announce a glasses-free 3D device by the end of the year. Apple probably won't, but will be planning one anyway.

A new golden age of game criticism
Game writers love to complain about how bad most writing about games is. A few have taken real steps to do something about that, but they're often steps in opposite directions, leading to too many cliques of isolated thinkers. I think this yearn a network communication model will emerge that helps form a real, cohesive culture of thoughtful criticism that isn't ashamed to leave the DudeBros behind.

Rise of alt cons
I know it's only half the cost of airfare to SFO, but the cost of entry to GDC is still prohibitively high, and other options are getting more and more attractive. There's space between PAX, GDC and academic conferences for something special, and I think we see something start to fill that space this year.

Indie freak out
The indie scene is strong, but a lot of attention lately has been on polish--old mechanics and ideas with good art and sound and tight controls. This year we see the crazies come back into the spotlight, and Fringe Busters will forget about featuring games that are "just a fun, little" anything. Also, Pyroman might punch me for that last sentence.

Cory "Demiurge" Banks

The MMO Will (Finally) Evolve - Driven by the financial success of Turbine's free-to-play model and a desire to break away from WoW clones, the MMO industry will finally push the envelope on what a massive online experience can be. My guess? The first true successful FPS MMO will be in beta at least by end of 2011.

The 3DS Launches Soft - Consumers will love the concept of 3D without cumbersome glasses, but the steep price point - and continued availability of the DS and DSi - will drive too many of them away. Expect lower revenue numbers for the Big N.

Android As A Serious Gaming Platform - If it's ever gonna happen, it'll be this year. Google will finally get the kind of gaming developer support it's needed, in spite of their "anything goes" model. Serious mobile development houses will follow the same path of Angry Birds developer Rovio for Android success - Ads.

Dominion Will Die - I have nothing to back this claim up, except the breath of a prayer. Please, if there is a Maker, let him end the suffering that is every new expansion of this deck-building dick of a game.

A Digital Distribution Titan Topples - One of the digital distro houses will fall in 2011, due to the simple fact that there's a lot of competition and not enough consumers to go around. Could be Impulse - the PR disaster of Elemental will haunt Brad Wardell for years - or it could be GamersGate. Doubtful that it's Direct2Drive, since it's sitting on that fat IGN cash. Spoiler Alert: It won't be Steam.

Diablo 3 Launches, Top Seller of 2011 - Why the hate, guys? This year's the year we all go back to hell. And it's gonna be awesome.

Dr. Who Special Will Feature Old Doctors - Not gaming related, but every bone in my body tells me this will happen. Just like classic serials "The Three Doctors" and "The Five Doctors," Matt Smith will have an adventure that brings him into the same timestreams of David Tennet and another classic doctor - probably Peter Davidson, the fifth doctor. Rose and her terrible accent will not be featured, thank Baker.

Comments

Roll call for last year:

- One of the non-Steam digital distribution channels (not Impulse) will fold as games begin to appear only on Steam to take advantage of Steamworks.

I'm going to say not yet. I think Steamworks is still going to drive releases to Steam at the expense of some other digital download services.

- Valve will announce Half-Life 2 Episode 3 bundled with Portal 2 and release it within three months of the announcement.

Nope.

- Natal will flop as Xbox 360 owners find themselves out of breath from simultaneously trying to contort their body to control the game and shout homophobic insults at each other.

Not yet. I still think both Kinect and Move are going to be disappointments based on MS's and Sony's expectations, but Kinect will do well enough for MS to consider it a successful beachhead in motion control gaming.

- Nintendo announces that the Wii2 will be released in 2011. It will feature HD graphics, a hard disk, and built-in Wii Motion Plus in the controller. Existing Wii remotes with Motion Plus will be compatible, as will the nunchucks.

Correct on built-in Wii Motion Plus, still waiting on Wii2/WiiHD.

- Nintendo rolls out a new free online service that allows the Wii and DS communities to share one space online. Nintendo will release one game that allows Wii and DS owners to play against each other.

*sigh* Nintendo needs to poop or get off the pot on online gaming.

And one long-horizon prediction:

- In 2011, Sony will announce the PSP-4000 and release it shortly before the holiday season. It will be the last PSP version released before Sony abandons the platform completely in 2012.

I'll keep this one for this year, but I think it may be 2014 before Sony abandons the PSP.

Fresh for 2011:

- Valve still won't get Half-Life Episode 3 out the door.

- Indie gaming continues to grow, providing an extra boost to the PC platform (which will still be proclaimed as dead in 2011), as digital distribution through Steam and Impulse provide increased exposure.

- The PS3 continues to get whipped in sales figures by both the 360 and even the flagging sales of the Wii. Move does not push sales like Sony had hoped, and the price is cut in October. Sony will not, however, advance its release schedule for the PS4.

- The Call of Duty franchise will have a release within a couple of weeks of Madden, and CoD will become the "annual kickoff" of the holiday gaming release season.

- Following the success of the Back to the Future game, Telltale releases another game based on an '80s movie (Ghostbusters?).

Another one, not sure how bold it is: I'm betting Nintendo does what they should have done in the first place if they wanted Motion Plus to catch on and phases out the original Motion-Plusless Wiimote; by the end of 2011, the model with integrated Motion Plus functionality will be the only one you can buy new in stores.

Ferris Bueller's Day of the Tentacle.

I don't get this. I mean, I'm aware that the PSP is an afterthought over here, but it's HUGE in Japan. HUGE.

Well, there are other posts in this thread and throughout these forums indicating that the PS3 is a huge sales failure compared to the 360, even though it outsells the 360 almost everywhere else in the world and is barely behind in sales world-wide. We Amerrrrcans tend to live in our own little bubble.

I only have one but it's Kinect will be something microsoft sweeps under the rug even after big initial sales it just can't hold on and software will be unremarkable at best.

I think this one will be incorrect especially by years end we will see a turn around in PS3 sales because of the software lineup.

I thought this would be the case in 2009. The PS3 had a much better software lineup than the 360 AND the PS3 Slim was released, but the 360 still sold more overall in the year. I think at this point, the margin in North America is simply too large to overcome.

Can it be off Twitter, though? Please?

Everyone's looking for where it'll be, but I think Twitter already had its shot.

If anything, I think a case could be made that Twitter has actually done a lot of damage to the scene, at least in terms of sheer output.

I'm not sure that Buzz (the new hotness, it appears) is quite there yet either, but it seems to be attracting some attention and it certainly has a much greater capacity for thoughtful analysis and commentary than what's offered in Twitter. If Google can line out some of the privacy concerns, among other things, maybe Buzz can eventually be the emergent model here.

I know I like Buzz, but I won't put it forward as the messiah of criticism. At least not yet.

HL2: Episode 3 won't come out, but Portal 2 will make everyone forget about it until Christmas.

Guild Wars 2 will be awesome.

Between the free Turbine MMOs, SWTOR and Guild Wars 2, WoW will start to lose marketshare. Critics everywhere will rejoice prematurely about WoW's demise.

More games will release using the UDK and it'll start to really catch on among indie devs.

I think this is the year that indie games really break out and run for it. There will be lots of talk about a revolution in gaming, but not much will really change, the awesome indie games will be more visible.

We'll start to see rumblings of a change in the major studios late in the year, with low-price games being less stigmatized, we'll see creative mid-range games start to come out from the major studios. I don't think anything will get released until 2012, but we'll start to see previews of lower-budget, shorter cycle more original games.

You haven't been able to buy a Wii remote without Motion Plus for quite some time. The new remotes they sell all come with a Motion Plus attachment, and new consoles also come with Motion Plus controllers. The stand-alone Motion Plus units you see in store are for people who have already bought Wiis who are looking to upgrade.

Bobby Kotick will continue to not comprehend why gamers hate him, and not only release one Call of Duty game, but two. I don't remember which company they outsourced, but they do have another CoD game in the works from a non-IW or Treyarch studio. Simultaneously, the IW Modern Warfare 3 will be ass-tastic.

Respawn Studios, the guys who created CoD and left Infinity Ward (or were fired from), are making yet another shooter. Modern Warfare proved to me that these guys had some real talent, and ever since I've been wanting to see what they can do in other genres. Unfortunately, you don't give your new studio a name like Respawn and make a not-first-person-shooter.

Square Enix will announce some new spin-off of Final Fantasy 13 and/or Final Fantasy 7, and maybe even Final Fantasy 15. After the commercial success of X-2, Crisis Core and that DS game for FF13, you can bet your ass Squenix is going to try and milk that cow further.

Valve will announce Half-Life 3, saying "screw it" and just throwing the concept of episodes out the window. Then again, this has been my generic prediction for a while.

Steam on PS3 will take off and make Xbox Live look like ass.

Rock Band will continue to be scared to death of adding European power metal despite the perfect set up for awesome guitar, drum, vocal and keyboard parts. I don't know why Harmonix hates Blind Guardian so much, but at least they have a good line-up of classic rock and 80's metal.

Gearbox will announce Borderlands 2, but will release no more than one screenshot or other form of tease for Aliens: Colonial Marines. Sega will continue to sit on their Aliens license while making more Sonic games no one cares about.

Blizzard will continue to not announce Metal Arms 2 and will waste their "console division" of absorbed Swingin' Ape Studios on dumb PC only franchises that have made me a bitter, bitter mother f*cker.

Nintendo will announce another major sequel franchise at E3 that no one will see coming and yet ejaculate in their pants over. 2010 was DKC Returns, Kirby's Epic Yarn and Kid Icarus. 2009 was Metroid: Other M, and before that was New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Could we be seeing a change in how they handle Zelda games on the 3DS? Or perhaps a continuation of the Mother series? Or something to do with Fire Emblem? I dunno, but this is me being optimistic at best.

Sony will continue learning their lesson slowly, and will just have Kevin Butler do their entire E3 Press Conference. Even though they have nothing significant to announce except maybe another generic-hardcore game sequel, people will say Sony had the best conference just because Kevin Butler is awesome.

Microsoft will still miss the point and continue canceling new IP in favor of Kinect games, Rare will be making nothing new or interesting, and the only new exclusives we hear about are a new Halo game. Any sign of them using their Shadowrun license or taking advantage of one of their 1st party studios will be null, unless dedicated to imitating Wii party games.

StarCraft 2 will be announced for Kinect. I'll go into a murderous rage that it takes the Kinect for people to see a good RTS can be made on consoles when the Wii has been waiting around for years.

Ubisoft delays I Am Alive, announces another interesting and artistic game that will inevitably have a serious number of bugs and flaws but still be really cool. If I Am Alive DOES come out, it will be that buggy and flawed game that is still really cool.

There will be at least three awesome third party games on the Wii that everyone ignores. The perpetuating myth of the Wii having "no good hardcore games" will continue.

Ogre Battle continues to be an extinct franchise.

2K Games announces City of Rapture, the Bioshock MMO. Ken Levine will have nothing to do with it.

LucasArts will continue making nothing but Star Wars crap.

My favorite game of 2011 will inevitably be hated by Yahtzee Croshaw. This year was Metroid: Other M, which he hated. I think we actually saw eye-to-eye in 2009, though.

Duke Nukem Forever will sell 1 million units in its first week. At the end of that first week, there will be 950,000 used copies on store shelves world wide.

Besides the already announced Lego Pirates, there will be another installment to Lego Harry Potter announced, but it won't be released until 2012. Inevitably, they will find another franchise to Lego-tize, which will make kids and fans happy. My guess would have to be either another Lego!Superhero, or Lego Tron.

The 3DS is announced at a $220 price point, and sells like hotcakes on it's March release. But this time, Nintendo makes sure it doesn't turn into the Wii by having enough stock on hand. Once more, they easily print their own money and prepare to start their own country.

No new next-gen console announcements this year from anybody, but code names and ideas float around. Once more, fans decide to name the next gen Nintendo console, Dolphin, until they figure out something better.

Sony struggles on improving for their next PSP, but either way, it will sell like crazy in Japan. In the US however, fans have lost hope it will ever be a success.

Kinect and Move become great for party games, but beyond that, the "hardcore" or experienced gamer sees disappointment with little to do with the peripherals other than Dance Central/Move Sports games.

The Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright crossover turns into a huge success, which means sequels will be made.

A new Scribblenauts is announced, but this time it is much like mad-libs. Now includes Proper-nouns, verbs, and adverbs. Children start to understand grammar, because that's not something they teach in schools anymore.

I would kill a small goat for a new Ogre Battle game.

Duke Nukem Forever slips to 2012. You heard it hear first.

Nothing is bolder than predicting DNF will have a schedule slip.

The Nintendo 3DS will be a huge success and once again Rabbit will be wrong when it comes to predicting popularity.

The Kinect will not maintain its sales numbers next christmas season.

Nintendo will announce a new home console at E3 for release this Christmas season. It will feature HD graphics, an improved wii remote, and something we aren't expecting.

I'm not sure what you mean by "once again" and what defines it as the "best gaming machine." Are you saying it is now, and will continue to be, or that it will see a resurgence. And by best, do you mean most used, or most convenient platform?

And it is interesting that the PC is being ignored by people that use their PCs every single day. You'd think they might be aware of how great it really is. And if they aren't, I think that speaks volumes as to just how great it is.

PC Gaming - Happily dying since 1985.

Diablo 3?. Meh.

Torchlight 2 all the way, baby.

It is now and it will continue to be my favourite platform. Most used and most convenient.

1- The 3DS will be released to excellent response in the first few months, but interest will taper off quickly, partially in response to a lack of quality titles, partially in response to alternatives for mobile gaming such as the iPad and Droid tablets.

2- Sales of the Wii will continue to lag, and Nintendo will announce a new console to be released in 2012, featuring high definition and a vastly overhauled multiplayer experience.

3- Valve will announce Half-Life 3 and release within a month of its announcement. HL3 will release simultaneously on PC, 360, and PS3.

4- Gabe Newell will announce that Steam will split off from Valve, becoming an independent company. This will result in a massive surge of new developers and publishers signing to distribute through Steam, and will also produce rumors of Steam providing the distribution and online infrastructure for the next generation of Microsoft and Sony consoles.

5- Sony will release the PSP2, which will feature a touch screen and high resolution cameras. Critical response will be largely positive, but sales will be abysmal, causing Sony to abandon the handheld gaming market altogether.

6- Rock Star will announce Grand Theft Auto 5 before the summer, and will schedule it for a holiday release. Unfortunately, technical issues will push it back to 2012.

7- Mirror's Edge 2 will be announced, and it will feature significant Kinect support.

8- Playstation Move will feature steady but unimpressive sales. Kinect will continue its domination, particularly after the release of a major studio shooter featuring a combination of Kinect and handheld controls.

9- Insomniac Games will announce either a Ratchet and Clank or Jak and Daxter game, which will be available on multiple platforms.

10- The Old Republic will be released to record-breaking sales numbers, but will not emerge as a genuine competitor to WOW until six months after release, when Bioware follows Turbine's cue and goes free-to-play. At that point, WOW will see over a 10% drop in subscribers.

Yeah, because that's what it needs in order to fix some of the awkward control issues here and there.

God, I hope that doesn't come true.

I love the internet. That took just over an hour, and from someone halfway around the world.

One of my predictions has already come true just about!

I didn't know Borderlands 2 was already announced, or as good as announced, but Aliens: Colonial Marines not shipping in 2011? Spot on.

Please let it be a packed-in standard controller so we can get more "normal" games.
