December 27 - December 31

Section:

Things I got for Christmas: warm shirts, Bose headphones, gift cards, a Corona hat with a bottle opener in the brim and a monster cold. As I sit here reflecting on the festivities, my chair has become a dangerous biohazard zone not to be entered upon pain of sore throat and uncontrollable sneezing.

I feel like this is my forty-second cold of the year, and reasonable or otherwise I can not help but blame my own children. They are ambulatory petrie dishes of casual infection, and you are taken in by their innocence and adorable mispronunciation of words at your own peril. As I sit here and suffer, my own son is playing happily with his new Kinect, annoyingly healthy and happy.

As for the week, it is another seven trips around the axis without much new on the store shelves. Given the predictably outstanding deals to be had on the many downloadable sources now available, it's hard to imagine a need this week for new games. Go pick up something on Steam is you need to spend some money. As for me, I'll be chugging shots of NyQuil tonight as though it were Jägermeister on my 21st birthday.

See you next week.

Everyone is getting sick around here. Half my family got sick after Christmas dinner because my aunt brought her baby to dinner and he promptly threw up on just about everything. So now Dad, brother, grandma, and a different aunt and uncle are now sick. I dodged the bullet, thankfully (though now I have no excuse for staying home from work.)

I never get sick. Then I had my daughter. In the last month I've had pink eye, a sore throat, and I currently have a sinus infection.

Merry Christmas.

I got a book that, among other things, went into an amount of depth about why we should all (with the exception of very young children) wash our hands (with soap!)... mostly because it would reduce instances of spread illness measurably.

(It's actually kind of freaky - around 80, 000 Americans die each year from picking up infections in a hospital, many of which would probably have been prevented with a little soap).

Whatever. The point is that, you're right - kids are little germ factories, and it's worth enduring the moaning to ensure they wash before they eat. Especially over Christmas, where a buffet style lunch is likely to be laid out on the table.

At least germs can't get passed via a Kinect controller (and the Dreamcast is, sadly, well behind us - did anyone else get seroiusly sweaty hands from the enclosed nature of those control pads?)

Cod liver oil. Whenever I get sick, some stupid bastard always tells me to drink cod liver oil. Since I can't see him around here, I'll do his job today

Strange. I get colds but I rarely suffer. Mostly, I get annoyed at the runny nose, but it's nothing some medication can't fix.

My mother always tells me to wear a hat. Even when I am at maximum mucosity.

I have infection vectors in the shape of children also. Can you get childproof hats??

No, but at least they'll provide protection from Lice.

Unless the hat in question gets borrowed, of course...

For God's sake, woman, he's a man, he's got a man cold! Hope you feel better soon, Sean.

If you're looking for some new games to be released this week you probably haven't been paying attention for about the past six months.

Oh doctor, oh doctor, oh dear Dr John
Your cod liver oil is so pure and so strong
I'm afraid of my life, I'll go down in the soil
If me wife don't stop drinking your cod liver oil.

Eeeeeeeew.

...

Bose.

My mission in life now, LarryC, is to find one thing in the whole world that makes you say, "Oh, yeah, that's exactly what I think/happens to me as well."

Honestly, I kinda expect to die having never fulfilled this mission. (Perfunctory smiley face, indicating playful rather than openly hostile nature here)

I've taken to referring to LarryC as the Anti-Ely. Your destinies are forever entwined; the arch villain to the super hero.

Unsurprisingly, I'm with LarryC on this one. Colds are more inconvenient than they are miserable.

Oh no, Elysium is on to my nefarious plans!

I think it has to do with your being in a cold country, sir. I live in a tropical country. You can live on the streets with barely anything on and not be too badly off. I also do triathlons, which I hope means I'm reasonably fit (though my trainer insists I'm borderline obese). I'm much slower when I'm sick. I don't feel like a million bucks like I usually do, but I'm okay.

Spoiler:

For reference, I broke my forearm about 2 weeks ago. Complete radio-ulnar fracture. Had to get plates installed. My predominant emotion throughout the experience was also annoyance. Even now, I'm annoyed that I can't go back to training for at least another month.

I've been sick for a month! So Nyquil for me this week also! Plus Antibiotics for 10 days yay!!!

I seem to flutter endlessly between having a head-cold or a head-ache. I'm a sickly person, seemingly vulnerable to hot and cold weather.
